Heard a few charges going off in the past hour or so in the Village... Interesting, I don't think I've ever heard avy bombs going off in the evening...

Morning, well hell, they woke me up today...

Also, today was awful. There isn't any snow out there. Definitely not worth going out tomorrow...

Yep, been watching the website as the flights got cancelled one by one. Poor bastards on the morning flight actually took off, flew most of the way, then turned around and landed back in Denver. Moving to plan B - gonna start driving Thursday around noon, and hope that United and Hotwire will refund my money based on cataclysmic weather events.

You can count me in that group of "retards"

NE ridge was boot to knee deep and as far as I could tell untracked. Only got deeper the rest of the afternoon. Lots of wind out of the SW. and snowing an inch plus an hour.

Ghee was ok in some places and just plain scoured out in more than some. The hill was icy and scraped from the holiday weekend and the new snow did not bond well to the ice and was mostly blowing around between big drifts and bigger scour zones. The top half of the mountain was mostly just ice and drifts. Hope the wind slows or the snow gets wetter or something because at 4pm the ghee still had a ways to go til it gets epic. Low angle and sheltered areas were pretty good.

That's too bad. The Village started out decent and got better all day. In some places you could feel the hard snow underneath, but in others it just felt soft. Last lap of the day we were finding shin-deep snow in the middle Hoback. Tomorrow's likely to be a junk show with crowds and a late start, but the skiing should be great.

Don't forget to mention the walk on trams until 2pm today. 6 weeks of powder angst were relieved with one 4pm run down the North.

I am ready for some extreme conditions tomorrow, as in extreme line waiting!

Woke up to the sound of 12" slabs sliding off the roof. Already 32 degrees at 6am, already upper 20's above 9000ft. Looks like we are gonna get a heapin helping of pinapple express upside down cake. Great for the ghee, that cold snow wasn't stickin to the ground yesterday but you guys on the east side watch your ass tomorrow, even inbounds. Slabs of wet snow on deep pockets of cold wind deposit lying on ice all on top of the rotten layer from december. Yikes. Sounds like a recipe for slides running the full length of their path.

Girlfriend and I are contemplating a crazy-ass one-day trip to Jackson tomorrow. Drive up tonight from Breck, stay the night, and then drive back down after skiing tomorrow. She almost absolutely has to be back in Breck early Saturday morning to open her shop. So, mags, what would you place our odds at, of making it up there tonight, and most importantly, back tomorrow, in time for early Saturday morning?

I've driven in horrendous 2' overnight whiteout blizzards at 10mph getting to Tahoe (snuck in just before they closed the highway - we were literally the only car on the highway, aside from a plow truck), so if the road is open, we can probably make it up there and back.

83.9% success predicted on the information you have provided, which I entered into my TRS-80.

I have been monitoring the situation from my Command Center, running sophisticated models, doing crunches on my Swiss ball, and sipping Don Julio. In the end, the spectre of strong winds between Cheyenne and Rock Springs cracked my resolve (painful memories are too fresh,) and I am unwilling to gamble on United.

Which means I will be up skinning rocks at Berthoud tomorrow while you are giddily getting face shots. Assuming they open anything on the mtn.

If I was dong that trip and more than likely skiing inbounds all day I'd worry more about the tram/upper mountain opening on time since you only have 1 day - which I'm sure someone here could give you their opinion on once they're done skiing today.

Personally I'd time your drive for a time when you're going to catch the end of the cycle followed by a day or two of bluebird so you can get out the gates or explore the pass. Inbounds storm skiing is rad and all, but it's about 1/1000th of what Jackson has to offer.

benfjord is wise. More importantly, he is making me feel better about my own decision to give it a miss and stay local. I only need to be back by Monday morning and I'm thinking it's not worth the gamble.

If you only have a day, it would suck to spend 3 hours in the gondy line listening to them bombing slopes for Saturday.

Ditch the girlfriend and make it a 3 day weekend. Driving 16 hours for 6 hours of skiing is stupid.

Snowing and riming at Targhee. DC down due to so much rime on the chair, towers, etc that the bullwheel wasn't spinning. It was warming up pretty good too, but still really fun down on Sac. Not quite the fog-rimed goggle-fest as up higher on the mtn.

Looks like we might get a little window on Friday, then storms are lined up across the Pacific in this zonal flow.

Pass finally open, chain law and it looks snotty as hell. And I gotta go to Idaho Falls to give an avy presentation. Waah. Hope I make it home tonight.

Does WyDot post when they will close the pass on their site? I saw this, but nothing noting planned closures for avy work and such on the pass. http://wyoroad.info/pls/Browse/WRR.RoadClosures

^how destroyed are you gunna feel the next day thou? Not exactly a drive I want to be dead tired on.

I've done several weekend trips to the San Juan's and Jackson from the front range and I feel like that's pushing it. My rule of Thumb is that you spend more time skiing than driving to make it worth it. Just my thoughts

It's more about getting the girlfriend out to her favorite mountain in sick conditions for a day, than about being practical. She's had 4 days off in the last 5 months of working 10-14 hour days. The hell of starting a business. This will recharge her, and our relationship.

So really, all I want to know, is what are the odds of making the drive, and now, the odds of the good shit being open (she can hold her own).
