What are the dates Mike?
Are you going to ski laps or do you just have to sit on the Peak?
I'd make the hike just for the possibility of going for a lap with the Godfather!

Any thoughts on cat trips in or around Whistler? Are there any good operations out there? Is cat skiing worth it in Whistler or does the mountain deliver on its own?

I predict at least one crevasse full of rotten snow giving way to some clueless keener touring up a glacier before opening day and then your classic tib/fib's from barely hidden rock/tree on opening day.
My favorite is watching the fucktard 1st yr ozzy all decked out in the brand new kit he just scored from the Turkey sale, blow by you on Jolly Green Giant, completely out of control, get bucked hard off the water bar he didn't see and then go face first into the frozen dirt only a few cms under the snow.
Oy, maybe I shoulda got that helmut... bloody good smiles all around, mate!

There are two options, Powder Mountain (south of Whistler) and Backcountry Snow Cats at Hurley Pass near Pemberton (http://www.snowcats.ca/). I've heard great things about Backcountry, good terrain/elevation and usually good snow, with more basic accoms (and prices to go with it).
Powder Mountain I've heard mixed things, if it's good there it's probably good at the resort, plus you get a mixed bag of people as they market heavily to tourists (and have a sales office in the village). Also I believe sledders use the same mountain and access roads (dunno if there are conflicts on the actual cat skiing terrain). Whereas Backcountry is more north and could have better protected snow when Whistler is wet or dry. Haven't been to either personally, if I was coming from far away and could afford it I'd probably look at a 2-3 day package at Backcountry.
Hahah, awesome.

so, its still looking good up there.
who in whistler area is up for sunday and/or monday?
i still dont know any skiers/riders in town, as i live in creekside and its ghost town compared with the village right now!
i'd be up for an overnight mission to singing pass too. i have a tent.
i know people are getting it, i just dont know them yet...
anyone who i talk to about october skiing looks at me like i'm nuts! ("you'd hike up a hill to go skiing...?")
just exploring different avenues to find people
i figure that this forum is where a lot of early season riders would postLast edited by monostevieb; 10-21-2011 at 08:23 PM. Reason: adding last paragraphs

So with the big day lots being all pay now, I wonder how fast base 2 and Creekside are going to fill up this winter.

Quit worrying about what other people are doing and just go walk up to Blackcomb glacier. It's a solid solo day trip and you will most likely see other people doing the same. Tell someone where you're headed, stick to the plan, use your head and have a good time. You are well within cell range and about a 2min heli ride back to town if things go sideways.

^^ That website is giving me heart palpitations, every time i check the six day snowfall accumulation it changes between 0 and 50 cm.
Skiing Sunday for sure tho. Went up baker a few days ago and it was firm to say the least.

breakable/nonbreakable rain crust to above 2000m right now at singing pass on monday. nice skiing, though
was that pow in whistler bowl, or crust? i cant imagine the pow line was there, as there was a 1 inch crust at 2000m
i hope this next front blows in a nice bunch, but i wonder how well it will bond up there...i'm from europe

Whis gets tracked out pretty damn quick if you're looking for a full day of freshies. If you know where you're going you can find fresh pow in some less travelled areas but i wouldn't count on it if you're never been there before. If you're around you have to ski the hill though, a good powder day won't disappoint. I can recommend Backcountry Snowcats out of Pemby if you want to shell out the cash. I think they're more of a extended stay operation vs one day trips. I did a week long self guided trip there and it was pretty sweet. It would only be a lot sweeter getting a ride up in the cat every run. Some day... Have fun dude.

i guess it will only affect those areas where there is a smooth filled in snowpack at the moment, like the high gullies and bowls...
