i was riding up cascade and was jolted with an urge to summit and ride down. i seem to remember somebody posting shots from the top a season or two ago. i always have visions of getting obliterated by a refrigerator-sized chunk of blue ice bombing down the mountain at 60mph like somebody did a couple years ago.

^ only skied the south side but was planning on doing it last year.

Didn't summit today. That lenticular wouldn't go away. Sat at the hogs back for 20 min or so. Absolute white out. Skiing below crater rock was fantastic. Wish I wasn't so tired and could've made a few more laps

Met up with Patarero and did a cool tour from Tilly Jane over to HRM. Went up the Tilly Jane trail towards tie-in Rock (windy conditions up there turned us back shy of the rock), down to Gnarl Ridge with a fun descent of the south wall, up and over Pea Gravel and out the Heather cat track.  The wind had it's way with the snow up high, but the snow down lower and in the sun was reasonably soft and rippable.  It would be fun to do the tour again with cornier conditions that would allow for skiing the higher bowls/lower Cooper Spur route in enjoyable snow.

There was evidence of a reasonably large slide in the drainage between Gnarl and PG from the last couple days.  Definitely will be interesting to see how this spring's cycle goes.

I hit up Skibowl for good measure on the way home (spring pass FTW) and enjoyed soft/carveable snow on and off the groomed runs on the upper mountain.  Love that place.

    South Side Summit Attempt

Today was one of the best days of touring I've had above Palmer, the snow was dry and light. About 4-5'' of grapel on top of consistent ice/wind blown layer.

One of the best things about today was the ability to skin all the way to the Hogs back, made the day a whole lot easier.

    Looking down on White River

When we got to the hogs back, it was complete white out. Could've hit the summit but the forecast was calling for more clouds in the afternoon and we didn't want to push it.

Speaking of Darcy's Powder Cover, I found that light! Such a great day to be up high

After bailing on the summit, we traversed to Illumination Rock. Snow over there had a funky crust layer but light underneath.

Do hip checks count as face shots?

I have an important question for all you Hood mags: WTH is up with Beanarino's in Wood Village? It has never, ever, been open when I drive by. Morning, afternoon or night, weekday or weekend, makes no difference. Money laundering operation, secret survivalist gun stash, or ???

Also, Benk, thanks as always for bringing the stoke with your great photos.

speaking of your stoke, ben, i'm curious how much of a network you tried to enlist for the contest. looked like the guys from alaska hit the social networking fairly effectively.

A lot of it was Tgr, it seemed like the first 40-50 votes came from Tgr in the first few days. Then on3p and David posted on their facebooks and lastly in a desperate attempt I got around 20-30 votes from newschoolers. I saw the Alaska photo was posted on nearly every Alaska company Facebook page(alyeska etc) "Alaska pride" was their slogan

Excellent, because we're trying to fix that for...drumroll...the TGR Maggot POV contest, for the maggots, by the maggots:

    http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...ot-POV-Contest

We have a cutoff date of April 16 for both team members and potential voters. We were going to do April 1, but want people who want to be on a team be able to join at the last minute. Putting the vote cutoff at the 16 should keep the Facebook crowd away, I hope.

So...I know there's at least one team in this thread. Patatero, benk, klauss, myself, who else?

We really need participation this year to get it off the ground, and you are allowed to use footage from previous seasons if you want. Lets see some edits...

    Beta

Going to be in the area Apr. 24/25. Was thinking of skiing the lifts. Don't know anything about mt hood other than it's a volcano in OR, has year round skiing, it's pretty big and gets in Powder cover shots occasionally.

Would be great to have someone show me around the ski area (which one I do not know), for beer. If lifts aren't an option and you'd like to drag me out touring that'd be fun too. I'm old but not too slow and can get down in any condition. (also got a thread going on about this on it's own but thought I'd try some direct marketing too). Cheers

Meadows will probably be open. Timberline will be open. Meadows will have more interesting terrain. Timberline has a better park, usually, if that matters.

If you want to cruise long groomers and take in the views, go to Timberline. It can be spectacular, though not that exciting. Personally, I would go to Meadows. Definitely more varied terrain, and we have got a great snowpack so everything should be open. Plus, you'll have the place to yourself on a Tuesday/Wednesday. If they open Superbowl, you'll want to do it. Bring beacon/shovel/probe, find buddy on hill. Have fun and report back here!

Quote of the day right there. You may even get lucky and score some new snow. It's April, it can happen. Cross your fingers. Your trip (saw it in your other thread) sounds pretty ridiculous (the good kind), have fun and enjoy Hood!

so how's this going to work? I haven't had a lot of time to sort through that first thread but will one person do an edit for the whole team? if so I wouldn't mind throwing an edit together if it stays under 5 minutes or so.

will there be a time limit for the edit?

Yep- one person is team lead and is in charge of the edit for the whole team. Time limit is 10 minutes.

I can supply terabytes of mediocre inbounds skiing that could almost guarantee a loss. I'm like Klauss without the skill or the balls. I ski fast and shitty with condensation on the lens. Thanks for reading my resume and considering me for this important position.
