As far as coverage, there was 2'-3' in that same zone last Wed. Was hoping that would turn into a base. Instead it got too warm and most of it melted off. How are you going to know without getting out there? Wait for other people to have fun? I say screw that. I'll enjoy the snow, fix the one core shot I got, let it snow more and try again later. I've been skiing this way for at least 12 years without a single ski injury/incident (27 yrs of skiing with no injury/incident). Its not luck, its experience. You like to be ultra conservative - good for you, but save your judgements for the real hacks who don't know the dangers of hitting rocks and sluffing snow, I know what I'm doing, and yes, I choose to assume more risk than most (like many here).

Not sure where the 'backseat' comment came from, but yeah, staying light as you ski (not bouncing and smearing around) makes a HUGE difference.
+1 ...usually it's not the idiots that are out early season, it's the die hards who just want to feel some snow under their skis. To each his own. Right now i'm envious of the coverage up there at Berthoud, not much to be had in CB but hopefully that will be changing soon.

CG and I went up to Jones on a beautiful early season day fall 2010. Too thin to ski. I have my ohsofavorite line up there where we did this instead.

Why do you give a shit what's going on there if your goal is to not ski there any more? I had fun on Wed. and so did my dog. No, the snow isn't waist deep, and you can't ski much yet, but you can make some fun hippy turns and leave with a smile on your face.

And just for the record... BC = British Columbia b/c = backcountry

Funny thing is, a week or so after we did our ski pack expedition, there was a big snow/wind event and the whole slope slid any way. Oh well.

Don't you guys have a Loveland or Jones Pass thread you can post in? There's a pretty awesome game of "Early-season-premature-ejaculator vs Crusty-too-cool-for-Berthoud" battle of twits going on in this thread and you're ruining it with your pics from last year.

So far I rate this thread

Skied Butler Gulch this morning. Great conditions, 6-8" fresh, felt the bottom in a few spots, but no big rocks. Currently attempting to mold contour footage into a TR.

Was decent up there yesterday but needed that fresh snow. Managed to find a few good spots:

If you knew anything about the guy you are calling out you would realize it is your rant that is clueless.

its supposed to snow tonight, so if somebody could go up and bring back a cool photo or two instead of a cat-fight this thread might get back on topic, and some of us might thank you.

    Thin and creamy

A couple quick laps today on Rabbit Ridge aka No Name Ridge.

Nice NE facing slopes were a soft creamy powder. I was hesitant to get on anything steep as everything is still thin and test slopes on a couple of steeper drifts gave poor results to ski cuts. Any slide = meat grinder.

Last night was really harsh on B-Pass.

VERY windy at the ridgetops this evening. From 8-9pm top of Mines Peak (Berthoud Pass) was steady at 78 with peak gust of 98mph. In the last hour the NWS now reporting:

FEROCIOUS WESTERLY WINDS ALOFT...84 MPH SUSTAINED WINDS WITH A GUST TO 112 MPH ON TOP OF MINES PEAK AT THIS TIME. THE VIOLENT WINDS APPEAR TO BE DESCENDING TO ABOUT 9000 FEET...BUT WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL 60-70 MPH GUSTS IN THE FOOTHILLS AGAIN.

Winds will ease later tonight, but Sunday's powder will not be fluffy and it will not be light. :-(

    Can you say, "Wind slab?"
