very nice... looks you guys had some nice turns regardless. it has been a downpour here in pasadena for the past 5 hours... there should be some nice turns to be had this week/next weekend as long as it's cold enough up there. The radar shows blue at about 6500 ft, so that's a good sign.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

If you bought a 2011/2012 pass, don't forget to renew it before 4/1. The "roll-over" deal for 2012/2013 is $99 for full pass holders and $29 for Virtual Pass holders. See web site.

Pretty reasonable way to make up for barely opening this year IMHO.

Baldy was really fun on Saturday. Nice slush turns in Emile's trees, Gold, Tube, and South Bowl. There were plenty of rocks, of course, but some really good turns. I did not go out to South Bowl Chutes, as that aspect was firm in Emile's trees, but the more south/east facing stuff got nice and slushy.

I was planning on going up today(Sunday), but it is calling for a max of 33, which might not be warm enough to soften things up. Right now, a bit after noon, it is still only 30, so I'm not going to drive up there for crust.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I hope it does end up getting soft for the guys going up today, I just doubt it with the current temp.

Gotta love a sunny powder day

Broke out a highway 78 for post ski on Saturday, so kept the scotch ale theme going

406 is that the East face of BP? How was the snow in the trees on the way up? And that was the day before the storm dumped a good foot up there right?

    San Berdoo Foolery 04-01

After nearly getting busted without a wilderness permit, 406 and I proceeded to poach some low-tide-so-cal-2012-jinx-season bc gnar. Good day in the mountains!

    Shameless self-bromotion

    April Fooled 4/1/2012:

Chunder and I had high hopes for the predicted storm, but arrived at the parking area for Shields Peak and found a much different situation than last year. No skinning from the trucks, looked like the snow line was about 7500, so it would be a long bushwhack to the snow. We drove down to the Anderson Peak trail head where we decided the hike out would be bad. Settled on parking at poop out hill road and hoped to copy last years San Bernardino peak route, but without the mountain bikes. This would have been the year for the mountain bike because the road was almost 100% snow free. At the spot to turn south and go cross country to San Berdo, there was also no snow, just 6 ft tall dense brush. So we continued on and started up the South Fork trail, hoping to hit snow prior to the Wilderness boundary:

I really don't like the south fork trail. It is a long boring slog. Adding insult to injury, we get busted for not having a Wilderness permit. 4.5 miles from the truck, the NE chute of San Berdo intersects the trail (~8000 ft) and we could see snow we could ski, so that lifted spirits. Massive carnage from past avalanches:

Lots of good terrain comes into view on the upper half:

    Nice rock:

Near the summit, 10500ft, I get a nice view of San Gorgonio:

View of the run from the top:

Snow skied well, little over 2" of dense chalky made for fun turns:

Looking back on the upper half:

Lower half was a mix of new snow, hard pack, and corn. chunder:

    Skied to the trail:

4 miles to the truck, wish I had my mountain bike:

Good to get the boots off:

Went up to San G for the weekend. Camping gear + splitboards = a painfully heavy pack for the first 6 miles on South Fork. The spring snow conditions made it all worth it, really nice creamy turns and great coverage considering the lack of snow this season.

    More snow in the forecast?!

We are closed today, Tuesday(4/10/12) and will open back up on Saturday 4/14/12 for scenic rides to the Top of the Notch restaurant.
The weather forecast shows a storm coming in overnight, its possible to get close to 12" of new snow by Fri. We will be updating as the days go by, we might be able to offer more than just scenic rides over the weekend. bd

If we get enough out of these storms we will try to open for skiing and boarding, possibly thursday, we need these storms to come in a little wet and stick and provide for some packed powder conditions.bd
All I want to know tomorrow night is what their plans are for Thursday! Might have to call in sick.....

Even if they do get enough snow, they'll likely stay closed until the weekend.

My best SoCal turns ever on Tuesday, March 27! Top to bottom untracked powder on BP all the way to the parking lot. It was sick ... especially the part where I was back in the office on the Westside at noon ... in flip-flops!
