Just pulled the trigger on the pass.... I go four times, I break even. I skied about 32 days at squaw and 14 in the BC last year, I can ski four at baldy....

TGR is showing their skiporn at Claremont College next month.
Usually a great show with a free baldy ticket thrown in. Unfortunately it falls on Mammoths opening weekend.

Thanks for the plug Twins! I know, opening weekend conflict is unfortunate, but that's the weekend we've always chosen.

Welcome to Fall in soCal, this is typical. As long as the hills aren't burning this makes for some nice times around here. October is my favorite month, partly because the weather is so nice, and the beaches are going off, but also it's the anticipation of ski season just around the corner. It makes for some fun times landing planes at Ontario airport. I have flown in there a few times when the winds were hollowing out of the canyons and got to give credit to some great pilots who land there in October.

The 6:30 show was for the general public.8:30 show for college students only.
After the movie they usually supply food. The last time I tried to go it was sold out so don`t be surprised if you show up at the door and can`t get in. This might have changed since the last time I went though?
Skeeze is putting this thing on so hopefully he will do a little promoting here for it and hold some tickets for any maggs that need them.
I will go if the wrod is the only skiable run that weekend at Mammoth.

Baldy is not smart by under pricing itself and the entire so cal region.... ya I know you all want a deal. I would rather see a smart business plan that let's Baldy live on forever. $59 pass = great deal for you, bad deal for mt baldy and the so cal ski season in the long run.

^I had to buy it at that price. Ever since I joined this place I can't refuse a smoking deal for some reason

At such a low price they're probably like selling gym memberships - lots of buyers who figure "why not buy it" but hardly ever go.

If Baldy ran lifts 3 & 4 in the summertime and the Forest Service let the regulars build a bunch of DH bike trails, the place would be mobbed from snowmelt to snowfall, which is a lot longer season than Mammoth. (Yeah you can already ride chair 1, but nearly all of the terrain under lift 1 is too steep for 90% of riders.) It's not like erosion is an issue up there, it's nothing but rock & decomposed granite - no dirt at all.

If the bike parks hundreds of miles from major cities can be profitable, I don't know how one 40 miles from LOS ANGELES couldn't make a go of it.

I got it at 120$, not 59, although I got mine for 49 the first year they did this.

The pass generates a ton of revenue. Most people probably got it at 120, or more. At that price, it is not all THAT bad of a deal for Baldy. You have to remember what a shoestring operation it is. The lifts are very old and slow, they don't put all that much money in. Getting more people to the mountain means more food/drink sales. They sell a lot of these passes, so I think the revenue generated is worth it. Many of the people who buy those passes go a few times, and buy things while they are there, meaning more revenue.

Baldy has done this for several years. If it were killing them, they would not continue. It is not like this is new there, they know this is a sustainable business model.

My guess is that the virtual pass is helping Baldy. In fact I think it is helping them a whole lot.
Like I said before, you also have to realize that they sold a bunch of passes for 120$ BEFORE the 59$ deal. This does not make me, or the other folks who bought 120$ passes very happy, but oh well. My guess is they sold tons at 120$ to the returning customers who buy the virtual pass year after year. I don't think this pass system is hurting them. I ski Baldy about 10-15 days a year, but I bet the average virtual pass holder skis it about 5 days a year. I think that is probably in the black for Baldy.

Yeah, I've been wondering about this for a long long time. A solid lift-served bike park anywhere near LA would be a gigantic success. I can't believe none of the ski resorts are interested in it.

Can any of the SoCal resorts handle the insurance liability demands of DH biking?

Probably what's killing it, and no doubt it also depends on the person in charge of the National Forest in this area. That person has a lot of power over this sort of thing, & it depends if they view public property as something to be enjoyed & utilized by the public (the original reason for National Forests), or if they personally view public property as something to be "protected" from the public.

Certain groups managed to get logging and mining removed from National Forests for the most part, activities which paid for the management of these areas for decades. Now that most of the income is gone, those same groups are whining that there's no funding for the Forest Service to continue proper management...well duh.

Why can other resorts handle the insurance liability demands? What's so different about SoCal resorts?

Seems like a forest service issue.Snow Summit ran into trouble with downhill bikes straying off the designated runs. The ski area ended up not allowing downhill bikes on the property.
Snow Summit does not transport downhill specific mountain bikes on the Sky Chair during the summer months for either recreational or competitive purposes. The resort will continue to carry conventional (Cross-Country and All-Mountain) mountain bikes for the public on the Sky Chair, with access off-site to Forest Service trails and roads. The resort has taken this action because of the liability exposure and forest damage from downhill bikes. Furthermore, there will be no more biking of any kind on the ski runs.

Any one of the following four factors will disqualify a bike from being transported on the chair:

    1. Bikes must be less than 35 pounds.
    2. Designated tire size must be less than 2.5.
    3. Front shock must have less than 6.5 inches of travel.
    4. Bikes must have at least two chain rings unless they are single speed.

well. there's these people. They look like they've got a reasonable start to a so cal bike park. Could end up in a poof of smoke tho, who knows.

My hard tail with a whopping 4" of travel weighs about 35 pounds.

    WEIGHTISTS!

however I have a feeling that I could probably get it on the lifts at SnowSummit if I tried.

now, back to thinking about snow

IIRC Correctly, Snow Scummit got sued ~7-years ago after some gal killed herself during a DH crash. Her parents went after Scummit and claimed that the mountain failed to communicate the true risk of the sport. The mountain decided it wasn't worth the cost of insurance and liability risks to keep bikes on the mountain.

From the years I spent riding Scummit on XC, FR, and DH bikes, there was really not enough traffic to make it a profitable business. Too many other things to do in SoCal during the Summer and Fall.

Japanese downhiller Haruko Fujinaka was killed in DH practice in 2003, but I don't think it resulted in a lawsuit. That came later in 2004 when Brian Spillane hurt his back in a DH race and sued SS for $25 million, which was later dismissed in court.

With La Niña returning...what did that mean for SoCal last year? When was the major precip?

Oh, and reminder - anybody down for "the ordinary skier" and the poor boyz film up at Baldy next sat?

    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
