No, but they're working on the Silver Fork lift, luckily I don't like Silver Fork that much, so I'm cool with it.

Maybe their real motivation is to use the empty tram cars to haul snow over from BCC and dump it onto the Canyons slopes.

I'm just a silly East Coaster, but I've read a good bit of this tread simply out of interest. I'm sorry if this question comes across as naive, but I can't help but ask why all you guys are only shitting on Talisker and Canyons. Why doesn't anyone appear upset w/ Solitude as well? Do they not want this Ski-Link? Was it forced upon them? Are they against it? I haven't seen anything saying Solitude DOESN'T want this gondola, but it seems like they get a free pass from the protest b/c they are a family owned mountain that keeps things old school? I'm really just trying to get a handle on what's going on out there, but can't seem to figure this part out.

A few theories dark star...soli is getting some pretty good heat elswhere..ask Matt Turley
    1. The tram won't upload people at soli with just a soli ticket to ski the terrain under the lift; it takes another Canyons lift after that one ends at the canyons to get to the terrain. Not true for Canyons ticket holders, no existing solitude lift need to do another run.
    2. This is a real estate deal for the Colony, a Talisker$$$ subdivision, not a ski deal.
    3. Why would Soli even want this thing, that is a better question...they could lose quite a bit of their parking if the traffic flows as the opposition has suggested. This because The Canyons does have some good terrain but all of it sits right on the crest, way more easily accessable from BCC than synderville. The canyons does have a lot of intermediate terrain, and no matter what the pundits say here, that is what sells $100 lift tickets, not a few trees with uncut pow. I think too that Talisker sure would hope to buy Soli.....this could be the start of that deal...the Darthvandersnoobies are getting pretty old.

Understood 100%. That was the explanation I needed.

    Thanks for the knowledge.

BTW, I agree that Canyons does have some cool terrain esp off the 9990 lift. I was there for 3 days last Feb, 2nd half of President's week. We had 2 15+ inch days and we were skiing untracked every run. With my home mountain being Windham, NY, I certainly had no complaints.

Just got a return letter from Rob Bishop.

    My favorite paragraph:

"At a recent event four people separatly spoke to me about this issue. They were from PC and SLC. The first three were excited about the possible tourism increase. The last individual wanted nothing to change. (75% in favor not jiving with reality here) I don't know if the last persons arguments were any less legitimate,But the studies so far support the first three. Studies say It could bolster tourism revenue, upon which so many winter industries rely. INDEPENDENT STUDIES estimate 500 permanent jobs in our state would be created and more the 500million would be infused into the local economy. Another study also predicts that it would reduce pollution by removing over 18,000 autos from the road

I have asked groups to send any independent studies that would refute these claims"

Such complete and utter bullshit. They must think we are fucking stupid to keep trying to sell us on the Canyon's "independent" studies.

I'd think anyone could come up with an "independent" study to refute their claims. It shouldn't be too hard, just make shit up like they did.

I was stuck in Ted Wilson's "Red Snake" in LCC on Saturday, and, like so many other times, it turned out not to be from congestion, but from a traffic accident. This was a bad one and involved a car that went off the road, which required that traffic be halted, emergency vehicles, etc.. It occurred to me that not only is it cheesy/sleazy for the Canyons to use traffic jams as an excuse to build a lift under the pretense of solving traffic jams, but in cases like this, they are using other people's misfortune, or even death, to try to slam in more development.

I was also wondering about their 51 million dollar a year claim. This lift is going to be running about 120 days a year (less in years like this), which means it supposedly will bring in $425,000 per day, or $35,416 per hour. It is just such bullshit that it's hard to believe anyone but a paid-off politician would believe it.

so they shouldnt need public financing if the lift will pay its self off in half of a half year. perfect.

got an email back from ole whorrin hatch:

Thank you for your letter informing me of your thoughts on the Wasatch Range Recreation Access Enhancement Act (S. 1883/H.R. 3452), commonly called “SkiLink”. I appreciate you taking the time to share your views.

As you know, Senator Mike Lee and I introduced S. 1883 and Congressmen
Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz introduced companion legislation (H.R. 3452) in the House. This legislation would direct the U.S. Forest Service to sell 30 acres of National Forest land at fair market value. This land would be used to create a gondola transportation system to link Canyons Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort, connecting more than 6,000 acres of developed mountain terrain for skiers and snowboarders.

I recognize that some Utahns have differing opinions regarding this proposed gondola system. I respect those opinions, and I want to emphasize that this bill does not open any new areas in the backcountry for skiing. The bill also requires compliance to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 for any impacts caused by the construction of the gondola between the resorts.

Estimates show that with this new transportation system more than 500 permanent jobs could be created and infuse more than $50 million into Utah’s economy. As you are aware, Utah is home to some of the greatest skiing in the world, and our ski resorts contribute significantly to Utah’s economy. By connecting these two resorts Utah will realize a significant boost in tourism revenue as visitors and Utahns obtain access between our developed ski resorts.

I continue to be a strong proponent for giving Utah more local control over Utah’s land, and this proposal has a lot of local support. Utah is a beautiful place, and I believe it is important that we develop our resources responsibly. This will ensure that future generations can appreciate this place that way we do. SkiLink is a responsible way to bring more connectivity between our canyons while still protecting Salt Lake City’s municipal watershed as well as the backcountry experience in the Wasatch. I welcome the opportunity to help Utahns use their land in a safe and innovative way to grow Utah’s economy and provide expanded access to the beauty of our state.

Again, thank you for writing. I do value your input and appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts.

    Your Senator,

    Orrin G. Hatch
    United States Senator

p.s. those TALISKER guys have given me way more money than you will ever give me so I'm much more inclined to do what they want me to do instead of what my contingency would like to see.
I guess the republicrats don't believe my "gondolas will increase underage butt sex" study. damn, shame I tell ya.

    Straight from Orrin's Hatch.........

I continue to be a strong proponent for giving Utah (You mean Canadians) more local control over Utah’s land, and this proposal has a lot of local support. Utah is a beautiful place, and I believe it is important that we develop our resources responsibly. (You mean fuck it up entirely) This will ensure that future generations can appreciate this place that way we do. (So future generations will never know what open space is like) SkiLink is a responsible way to bring more connectivity between our canyons while still protecting Salt Lake City’s municipal watershed as well as the backcountry experience in the Wasatch.

Sit here and complain on the interwebz. Obviously

It's a great question. What can we do really?? it' feels like it's out of our hands, all being done in the back rooms of washington by people who have no idea about the facts and logistics of the project. It's very frustrating to listen to these total lies, and At this point I'm just hoping the truth comes out thanks to opponents in high places like the FS, Mattheson, etc.

Sad thing is; I consider myself a Can local, been here 12 years, used to patrol a long time ago, and have a lot of pride in my little slice of scrub oak hell, (tho I spend most my time out the gate) but the direction Talisker has been taking this place over the last couple years marketing to ultra yuppies and colony cronies is totally disgusting, and the epitome of eveything that is wrong with the ski resort formula today. However I really don't want to boycott because this place is like my family and I live 50 feet from the cabriolet.
