I still agree with My Pet Powder Goat on this one. Even if the legislation passes, Talisker and Solitude are going to have to bring money to the table to make it work. Even with the support of local and federal government, I doubt they will be able to sustain the cost.
I'm still having flashbacks of the proposed tram up Mt. Ogden.
Nevertheless, I wrote in to our douche bag senators and plan to call as well.

I really think that the Ogden tram and the Talisker expansion are two very different issues that should be called out.
0) The development density around Mt.Ogden is nowhere near that of the Cottonwoods.
1) The Ogden tram does not traverse a major water resource.
2) Ogden and the local environment would massively benefit from a tram that could be accessed from public RAIL transportation.
3) Consider the benefit to independently owned, easy access businesses around Ogden.
The Sierra Club is nothing but a bunch of bullshit shills who defend the oil, gas and timber industries by focusing on dinky issues like ski area development. Read up on it, they and the Nature Conservancy suck.Merde De Glace

Drew, I've changed my tune a little...with this getting circumvented around the proper due process i'm actually concerned now. they get that land through the congressional vote it might be 'game over' and talisker has proven that they will pay the money to bring it online. If it has to be reviewed by the FS, and subjected to public scrutiny then I would say this would never pass, but with them pushing it through like this I give it a 50/50 chance.

Fair points. The big question burning in my mind is if they have enough $$$ to make it work. I actually can't see how this is a good financial deal for anyone other than Solitude.
Either way. I need to call. Thanks for all the insights.

Even if the bill passes, there will still be watershed reviews and a FS environmental impact statement. Still, once the land is privately held, its a matter not of if it will be developed, just how it will be built out.

Talisker=Park west w/ a nice strip mall l
Gnarwhale, I agree. Getting the land is only the first step. The economy is such that a big build out would be tough, the ski industry is not growing enough to sustain this growth. But! more land for the 1%ers (from us the citizen) would make it easier. Perhaps we should bring in Mr. Slaagmaster for some thoughts on this.
it is good to be the geezer!

I wonder what they will come up with for a "fair market value" for the land? Considering it isn't even up for sale, they will probably counter that there are no market comparables, so it is worth 15k an acre, or whatever the FS limit is on buying land.

I read that guy's comments. He is either getting paid by the Canyons to be their facebook cheerleader, or he is honestly the lamest fucking guy who ever put on a pair of skis. Who the fuck could get that excited about the Canyons? (Disclaimer, I've never skied there, but I've biked the area enough to know that I have no interest in skiing there). In one of his posts, he was super complimentary of the awesome skiing around the Colony. No one could get excited about that shit unless (a) they just bought their house, sight unseen, from their home in Dallas, and showed up for their first day on skis ever; (b) they are paid by the Canyons to be really excited about it, or (c) they are super-heavily medicated.

He is aka "itsnowjoke" on all of the other forums. He sent me all of his personal info as I had the same question - do you work for Talisker, or what? He doesn't, but has lived in the area for eight years and loves skiing at the Crayons. And he is obviously a very fast typist.

they just bypassed the whole process in which one goes about obtaining government land by getting US congressmen to sponsor acts of congress to FORCE the FS to sell them the land, do you really think they're going to go back a step and say okay now we own the land, lets do this right???!?! NO! they already bypassed that process. Talisker hasn't lived up to its promises concerning the mid mountain trail when they re-routed it to make ways for new homes in the colonies, talisker even owes for sewerage and water utilities in summit county for their Tuhaye property and have yet to even motion to pay them and summit county isn't enforcing the laws.......
do you think they're going to just start playing by the rules???? I think its more likely they'll just start developing the land and deal with the consequences once they happen...... its not like the Forest Service or SLC watershed is going to remove a lift once it goes in.
Trust me, Talisker has the money to build the lift. We're talking about the number one land owner in the richest county in Utah, here. in fact, when has the economy or not having money EVER stopped a development at the canyons???? that place has a history of building lifts and expanding well beyond its means.... Talisker has been buying up land in PC for a long time now and now that land has all but run dry, so it looks to expand elsewhere. its a company that doesn't play by the rules because it has so much money it can rewrite them as it pleases.
Have you been up to PC lately??? does it look like the talisker properties are just sitting there idling waiting for the economy to turn around? Nope, they've been putting in new homes like economy isn't even a word in their lexicon.
did you know that all the restaurants that talisker owns aren't even managed to make money??? seriously. the restaurants give out so much free food and such to potential home buyers and its properties' homeowners that they are all in the red. no joke, i worked at one. The manager of the restaurant told me that the restaurant was just set up to entice and please homeowners and potential home buyers. ask anyone that has worked at "talisker on main" or "tuhaye" or "farm fresh" at the canyons how much free food is given out...............
Talisker is a real estate company. they're not in the ski business to sell skiing, they're in it to sell ski in/ski out homes. they're not in the golf business to sell golf, they're in it to sell homes on a golf course. They're not in the restaurant business to sell food, they're in it to show people how great its going to be to own a talisker property. they are a real estate company with very deep pockets.
don't be a naysayer and put you're head in the dirt, hoping it will never happen. this is a much different type of beast.

Well, to each his own, I guess. I mean, that's lame, but if it makes him happy then good for him. Do you think he's ever skied anywhere else? If he gets that excited skiing at the canyons, perhaps he stays away from alta, snowbird, and the rest because he's had too many embarassing incidents in which he has spontaneously jizzed in his pants.
Brutah - you are right about talisker, the economy doesn't seem to slow them down. They'll fucking gold plate this new gondola just to impress their potential home buyers at the colony.

more utah tax dollars at waste, here's a report that was released to today by the STATE OF UTAH and 104 economist that says that protecting lands is good for the state's economy....
http://jobs.utah.gov/wi/pubs/trendli...eoutskirts.pdf
but the state of utah will probably just throw away that report and ignore it like the $100,000 DABC report that came out a few weeks back showing how utah could make more money by allowing sales of wine and liquor in grocery stores.

I don't think there will be an EIS or even an EA if they get the strip of FS land underneath the proposed tram. That's what they are trying to avoid. They will have to address the potential for impacts to biological resources (plants and animals), cultural resources, and jurisdictional waters of the U.S.
I don't know how much SLC will be able to do as there will be little impact to the watershed in the short term. It would be nice if SLCounty had the balls to stand up to this, but I doubt it. I wonder what UDOT thinks about it crossing the highway. That's another negative precedent among many. If the legislation gets rammed through, there is always the legal option.

They have already figured out how to bring money to the table. Have the taxpayers pay for it. By terming the plan a "transportation initiative' they are angling for future UTA tax subsidies, thus putting at least part of the financial burden on to taxpayers. So not only would we lose "our" land, we get to pay for it to. Sneaky fucks.
Anyone ever heard the phrase, "Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining"?

Webcast from the gubbernment today. WTF Jensen, a tram from two ski areas isn't going to do SHIT for reducing environmental impact you fucking lying sack of shit. I guess this is how our government works. Send a bunch of lying assholes to tell their side of the story to a bunch of nimwits who have no idea about the real issue at hand, then hope for the best.
