    MPC #73 UNREAL 9/11-9/25

Harping back to one of the big reasons I started screwing around with old film cameras in high school, this one should be pretty fun. I always enjoyed (and still do) creating captured scenes that have nothing or very little to do with reality as seen without a photographic tool...or a good helping of psilocybin.

That includes just about everything from a long exposure, with one extremely quick spot of time captured.....

    Shot by DeutschBag

    Shot by skiingislife

A deliberately manufactured scene (this one's right up your alley outabounds )

Even just a choice of subject matter, a very 'real' thing captured in an unusual way
    Shot by Chainsaw Willie

I'm trying to be intentionally broad because these things work better with more submissions and wider interpretations. Run with it.

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

Cool subject and I'm honored you used one of my pics as an example. Will have to see what I can come up with for this.

does messing with colors/white balance etc. count? or is it more about capturing things in a unreal way, not making them look unreal? i guess the latter, but thought id ask...

Honestly, I thought about including that, but that was kind of already covered in one of the other MPCs, "altered". I kind of decided that doing that would open up a whole mess of shitty photos with some dumb stuff done to them. But hey, if you've got something that's compositionally enhanced, by all means hit it. I just wanted to avoid a slew of effects being the main point to a shot.

Mainly I just didn't want to have to look at a bunch of HDR shit

This is what happens when you turn a bunch of kids loose with glow sticks on a Saturday night.

Unfortunately (as I won't have time to get anything else done), it's ineligible by a matter of hours...
This is the worst pain EVER!

These MPCs should run through the weekends IMO.

People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

    ^Cool fungus. I don't see the millipede.

The suit's second shot is rad.

It was a nighttime long exposure lit with a small flashlight. That fungi is also know as the "Chicken of the Forest" and the millipede is walking across the bottom of the 'mouth'. The fungi was big- probably 8" X 8" at least.

This was a tough one, and made even more so by some of the fantastic entries.

    I went with a more dream-like interpretation for #1...

    Motion Blur.

and then not sure if it counts, but here's what I think are called "monster 3d" shots since the two 3d channels are shot from about 5 feet laterally separated, thus making the 3d effect that which a monster might see (a monster whose eyes are 5 feet apart). If you know how to make "Magic Eyes" work, this is the same thing. Transforming the viewer into a monster is about as unreal as it gets in photography ... if you don't know how to see these, try "staring through it," as if letting your gaze fall upon something a few yards behind/through your computer monitor, and try to make the two images become one. DO NOT cross your eyes though; doing so inverts the effect. your field of view should contain 3 copies of the scene. one in the middle that is the focus of your field of view, and two others that are hovering to the left and right...

finally, an ineligible one from last summer I think would have fit the category well:

"You can't shave off stupid." -lionelhutz
