From their facebook page:
Its a go. See you all tomorrow morning.Friday - 2 pm Status Update - We will be opening Saturday May 19 for private cars and guided tours to the summit! Operating hours will be 8am - 5pm. Weather permitting (as always) we will now be open to the summit 7 days a week. The Auto Road will LIKELY open to motorcycles by 11 am Saturday, this gives us time to get more water on the gravel section and some auto traffic on that gravel to pack down the loose stones that are currently on the surface. The Hiker Shuttle service off the summit will begin next Saturday, May 26. Game on! hw

Dude! If you're gonna continue to taunt us with your snowpack reports, pics please.
speaking of which: the PNW snowpack nearly swallowed one of its own:

What, nobody posted a TR on the drive home?
Seriously though, nice seeing Thin Cover as always, and nice to finally meet Lynchdogger.
Total turnaround time for walking back from the town commons carnival with Micayla Friday evening to reaching the snow this morning was just a bit over 12 hours.
After a rather painful 4:20 alarm, and then a delay when I remembered that I should empty the dishwasher for those awakening considerably later, the drive got off to an unpromising start when I backed into my driveway from the garage, forgetting about my friend's car parked in aforementioned driveway. (See aforementioned 4:20 alarm.) After a brief inspection (no damage!), the drive was very smooth. (Somewhat unsurprisingly, traffic from Western MA to Northern NH is quite light early Saturday morning.)
I pulled into the lodge parking lot to use the facilities, only to see the Closed sign. So back across the highway to be greeted by George! No, not a clever reference to Mt Washington, but rather George, the friendly gate staffer, who provided me with the key stats, including 80-mile visibility -- nice!
Channeling my inner Frank Sprongl:
... I quickly passed the only car ahead of me and zipped up there ahead of schedule on the CD narration. (Which, unfortunately, switched to a new narrator sometime in 2010 -- the text is mainly unaltered, but no more "rendezvous with destiny" or however that line went.)
Vertical worked out to 366 per lap:

Although I'm going to claim an even 370', especially since the ancient Avocet tends to be conservative in recording vetical. OTOH, I was the only one "skiing" the bottom ~20' vertical, and the top ~20' vertical might disappear soon. Everything else is pretty solid though.
Oddly enough, the snow starts at pretty much the highest possible point for this time of year -- maybe ~20' vertical below the informal parking lot. The problem is with the missing bottom...
But still, skis like way more!
Snow quality started off nearly perfect for my first five runs by myself, then got beat up (but not too badly) once everyone else showed up . . . which was first dominated by the juvenile set:

The girls on the sides are the eight-year-old twin daughters of the proud father in the background. (And Mom works at Cranmore.)
This is their *THIRD* year coming up here.
"Are you going to post these pictures on the internet?"
"Yes, I will."
"Yay!!!"
The crew on their first run:

Here's Dad having some fun:

And the kids:

And the weather and scenery:

Dad had to carry up the skis for all three girls:

"Hey Camera Guy, can you take another picture of us?"

(I suppose that the majority of skiers there were of the age of majority despite what you see in my pictures, but being the father of a young girl, I of course took only pictures of little girls, hoping my daughter will be able to join them up there in a few years...)For those stuck in the Northeast, follow my NE Rando Race Series and check out my avalanche course. Nice write up Jon, we caught the girls and dad on their hike out when we had our casually timed arrival, the idea of Driving up instills the lazy vibe, guess we went with it

Snow was really good and had some great laps, steepest section of the fields were in which is the best skiing. Not Jon S's impressive 22 laps but Managed 8 before beer, grilling, sun, and other niceties called me away. Perfect weather up there for sure Rog. I was on the fence about fishing instead but glad I went, no other place I would have wanted to be once we got there.
I will throw some pics up in a bit including Freeheel hand feeding a mountain fox.

Been gone a while, busy with new job etc. Glad to see the ECRC is still getting after it. So anyone in for the American Craft Beer Fest?

05-20-2012, 07:39 AM #8649Now your talking! It would be awsome to do an east coast mtb mini. Platekill is out for me next weekend but meeting at Highland bike park, Burke/Kingdom Trails, Platekill or NEMBAfest this summer would be awsome. I'm a reg dweller at Highland and we are hitting NEMBAfest for sure with a crew. So how many of you guys like the lift served DH/FR stuff here?Tbatt might be heading to Plattekill to meet me 5.28. Gravity Lover will be there too... I think one more makes it a mini, anyone else interested?
If coming from NYC.... pm me.
