I expected some good answers but that was some impressively in depth shit, gents. I knew he fell up near the headwall, I just wasn't picturing it correctly. It makes more sense thinking of the depth as somewhat horizontal or downhill (not completely vertical), especially considering how steep that section is where the water runs.

    VTF that thing is baller!

Edit: Gonna drop some tunes... a friend in Montana introduced me to this band yesterday. You jam band freaks will dig this one. Live from 1971:

RIP Ken Quackenbush, the man behind most of the trails at MRG. Quacky is named in his honor.

My favorite Ken Q. quote, "I never thought of sking as a 'lifestyle'. Lifestyle implies some kind of choice or fad. For me, skiing is a 'way of life'."

    ^^ a little more here:

    TODAYMay 08, 2012:
The Mad River Glen community lost one of it's most beloved and influential members when Ken Quackenbush passed away on Monday. Ken Quackenbush, a man who, as General Manage, not only helped to create the Mountain we love, he was also the g...lue and that held Mad River Glen together for forty-five years under three owners. Former MRG owner Betsy Pratt’s once said, “Ken is the genius behind Mad River. He designed most of the trails and established the attitude that trails must flow into the contour of the mountain.” The trail Quacky was named in his honor. Ken is survived by his wife Fran and daughter Christie. Details regarding the funeral will be noted here as soon as they become available. Rest in Peace Ken!

Thanks to all of our loyal skiers who helped to make the best of a tough season. Everyone here at Mad River Glen really appreciates your business and support. We are in Spring-mode here at the mountain; evaluating the season and getting a jump on making plans for next year. The mountain ops crew is already hard at work cleaning up and doing the regular maintenance on the infrastructure.

    RIP, Ken.

VT-F, I wanted to find a nice winter view from the inside of the new house but there are too many damn pages in this thread! Awesome job, hope you get back into the outside soon.

Where's our May dump, already? If ScottSki is hanging them up it's bound to happen!
.....I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record

edit: looking at a few of my pics from saturday, i can see that's not always the case (but seems to be for the really big ones).
Also lots of small cracks typically open up near the top of Chute: not just now (when crevasse conditions are so bad that the Tux hiking trail is officially closed), but also on March 21 when during our circumnavigation tour we were coming into the top of Chute from the SE Snowfield.
We deliberately avoided the center of Tux since even though we knew it was still safely navigable, we didn't have a good view of the best route (as we were coming down from the top without having gotten a view from the bottom). But the top of Chute had way more developing cracks than I would have expected, which were also more of a hazard to us since we were traversing, i.e., with our skis parallel to the emerging cracks. A partner even dropped into one of the slots a little bit -- more embarrassing and annoying that anything else, but still an important wake-up call.

And some pictures from the extended weekend –

The most arduous stretch was from ~7am to ~8pm Saturday, as I solo babysat our toddler daughter and her local two little cousins:

Then off to Killington for Sunday --

From a distance, looks like coverage on about half of Superstar's 1200' vertical:

But closer up, it's obviously just the lower headwall:

    Vertical was 475':

Even though this picture would appear to indicate otherwise, snow quality was quite nice:

After all this rain, one narrow section might become disconnected, although sure seemed really solid on Sunday.

Monday in Tux was not only excellent skiing and excellent weather, but also excellent scenery.
So of course I didn’t take any pictures – hey, we’ve seen all that stuff before!
I almost stopped on the drive back to take a picture of the surprisingly intact upper section of the 7, but I was in too much of a rush to return for our daughter’s bedtime – fortunately, she’s worth it:

At one point I was actually thinking that we should take another picture of us embracing to update our classic one from Great Gulf years ago, but then I thought the classic is more fun to keep recycling.

Get better soon! Although I can reassure you that you sure aren't missing anything good outside today...

But wow did the rest of it ski well -- thanks again for putting in the booter and convincing me to take a break from my Left Gully laps. Definitely have to be more on your guard there for Chute as opposed to Left Gully, but sure was some nice skiing, and your booter was very well placed.

We Easterners may have to suffer more in many ways, but corn that good, in the middle of the afternoon on a warm day, in the sun since the early morning, and with absolutely no wet slide danger, very grateful for that!

no prob, booters are my specialty glad you joined for a lap. felt guilty having chute all to myself. plus, climbing chute is a bit more demanding than left. didn't want you lapping left 7 or 8 times!

ya, all day in the hot sun and not sticky either. like you, i've done a lot of skiing all over, mostly in my 20's, but i could never get over how damn good our corn skiing is for months on end whether we get a freeze or not oftentimes. ya the pnw has huge descents, but in that huge descent you get maybe 2k of vert prime with the rest frozen or mank. i'd just rather lap 1-2k shots of perfection than deal with the other crap, none of which we ever really get.

pretty damn rough video. long too at 3 minutes, but with all of the hazards opening up, twas best to stay on the safe side. i only started my run after you cuz i thought you'd be down already as i thought i left enuff time. you can see where i pulled off hard skiers left once i saw you down by the big crack. at about 1:47 is when i asked politely that you pull off to the side so that i could come through. thanx for that. such a great run to mix up the turn shapes and sizes. pardon my parting "wasatch wiggle" turns at the end above the ravine floor

oakes bonus vid from tomorrow, a year ago. doesn't get much more sun baked than south facing oakes. this was shot in the afternoon after like 8 full hours of hot sun. corn doesn't get any better.

Not exactly the most exciting videographic qualities, but fun to watch the run from that perspective: turn, turn, turn, stop and be concerned about sluff. Hmm, hardly any sluff. Okay, turn, turn, turn, stop and be concerned about sluff. Hey, still hardly any! Okay, turn, turn, turn, now where is that glide crack that seemed to prominent from below but that I can't see at all now? Okay, turn, turn, turn, am I at the glide crack yet? Oh, hi up there Rog!
I love how at the very end you can see me ski up the runnel and then back off.

^^^^^^^ya i shoulda told ya that i'd knocked most of the loose snow down on my 1st 2 laps. my second lap i was hopping over the runnel river on every turn. kinda fun. that crack was pretty creepy.

dodges always gets a nice runnel going, but dodges isn't nearly as steep as chute, or for very long.

Nice vid there icelantic! The Chute was very gnar.

I think my nonmag amigo and I got to the Bowl shortly after that run. I did grab a few pics on high, seen it all or not, it was a breathtaking day for sure. Great to meet you and jshefftz, you guys can seriously get after it, I think maybe, much training for Alaska and such!

Well, for us it was a somewhat exposed sketch booting up Right to begin with...but not as sketch as Chutepack guy's maneuvers I think. Good thing that dude didn't fall in a glide crack :/

You should go in late June or early July on good last season. There all over the place.

Jonathan, that Superstar pics looked similar to June 1, 1993 coverage. And yes, the lift was still spinning. Walking distance (mostly the whole 'flatter' middle part) was close to the equivalent to the snow part.

    TBatt...great stuff about VTF's ex.

Last, but not least: RIP Quacky.

Cable rail, my idea for the clean look without vertical balasters dominating the front and they allow you to look through easily. Owner really happy with the railing. Upper Village road
