When I ate at the Gite many years ago, I was surprised to see on the menu . . . caribou! And not just from anywhere, but from Canada too. IIRC, even Quebec!

So I asked the waiter why so many restrictions were in place for hiking/skiing/etc to protect the caribou, but here we were being encouraged to eat them? His answer was essentially that in the quote above.

I've just finished my late season weekly update: 3 ski areas left for this weekend: MSS, J and K.

Oh yeah, some serious snow on the way... on the North shore east of Quebec City. Road Trip?
I have most of next week off. I'm in, got a TDI wagon with a box so we can travel on the cheap too.

MadPat and Jonathan, you are of course right on the money. I love the caribou too. But it is getting harder to see how actual science is affecting policy rather than just politics affecting it.

On bad days I should avoid talking at all, let alone Internet posting, but what's said and done is done, so...

... who's going North this weekend? The Saguenay looks pretty good for new snow at the moment...

^^^^^ northern quebec has a population of over 1 million caribou, which are hunted. South of the st lawrence the population is a dwindling 183 with coyotes and bears eating the 3-4 new off spring a year. So it is rapidly declining. I am sure it was good, but I highly doubt it was a southern quebec Caribou. You have to pay a lot extra for that.

4-18/19 Northern Presidentials (Jefferson & King Ravines)

    Details here:
    https://picasaweb.google.com/1183643...eat=directlink

    But a few pictures in brief . . .

Route (counterclockwise) was actually reasonably efficient in terms of skiing:non-skiing vertical descent at over 40% (although in terms of vertical:horizontal, not so efficient!):

Some turns above the hut after dinner on Wednesday (so that it counts as a ski "day" right?):

Thursday morning, The Beach (from just below the summit of Jefferson) skied perfectly, then hooked up as always into Stealth Gully to descent into Jefferson Ravine (with views of Great Gulf in the background):

The top part of the 7 had amazingly excellent snow *and* coverage, then the gully crossover was fine, although soon after that the snow disappeared (but fortunately I found the hiking trail almost immediately, since otherwise the lower elevations in King Ravine were horrendously schwacky):

Scottski, nice job finally making it up to K. Wish I could been there with you guys.

Rudeness, if you see this, the temp is going to start to fall tomorrow leaving you with a few days of snow. Hope you find some lines that are still going.
.....I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record

I was going to mention it, thanks for the reply TC. The population have been distinct since maybe the last ice year a few thousand years ago.

    The Atlantic-Gaspésie woodland caribou

The Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou population, found on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, is classified as endangered, which means it is at imminent risk of extirpation or extinction. Under Quebec legislation, it has been classified as vulnerable since 2001.

Gaspésie Provincial Park was established in 1937 to protect the declining herds. Hunting inside the park was banned in the 1930s and logging ended in 1977, yet the population declined from about 500 to 1,000 individuals in the 1950s to about 200 in the 1970s.

The population stabilized in the 1990s after a national recovery plan called for strategies such as coyote control and management of tourist activities. Since 1999, a special forest management plan was implemented for the habitat area outside the park boundaries.

Just update my Last to Spin post on the Ski Mad World blog.

    Here it is...

    Saturday update:

Killington has announced that Sunday April 22 will be their last day of the season.

Ran in the forecast where the three remaining ski areas.

Mt St-Sauveur was closed today with the rain, will open sunday is the forecast is better: 2 runs / $20. Open only on weekends.

Jay Peak is only running the Triple. 3 runs / $35. Will be evaluating re-opening the weekend sometimes midweek..

Killington is at 5 runs / $49. Last day on April 22.
