new liftline. if you really want to feel your heart sink a bit swing through jungle, not only do you get scenic dead birches, but nice open canopy where a swath of them got topped

good news is you don't have to wear your special rubber helmet to ski the powerline anymore, new poles/elevated line
in light of the recent fancification we will not be skiing anymore, but please stop by and say hi at the new boot shine and goggle polishing booth at mid burke, TGR member discounts applied of course

My bad, the rock is not mossy so would not be Dougs. If I look around I should have my rubber helmet from my childhood. Sure did save a lot of damage way back when. I am looking forward to the goggle shining booth as it is one of the only pimp offerings not available at the "new Bush".
I am looking forward to da show tonight, should be in Essex around 4-5 . My pal Chris is setting up his pizza oven at the car dealership across the street. I am stopping there for free dinner and would meet anyone here.

The birch are like the canary in the coal mine. I have been watching the birches slowly die at Jay over the last 20 years and believe it is primarily due to the effects of acid rain. The trees die from the top down.
From this site:
"Acid rain has been implicated in forest and soil degradation in many areas of the eastern U.S., particularly high elevation forests of the Appalachian Mountains from Maine to Georgia... . ...the impacts of acid rain on trees are due to the combined effects of acid rain and these other environmental stressors. ....Acid rain does not usually kill trees directly. Instead, it is more likely to weaken trees by damaging their leaves, limiting the nutrients available to them, or exposing them to toxic substances slowly released from the soil. Quite often, injury or death of trees is a result of these effects of acid rain in combination with one or more additional threats." etc. etc.
Acid rain hitting the ADKs and New England is a result of emissions from Canada, in particular the Superstack in Sudbury (sorry about that, folks) and coal-fired generating plants in the midwestern US.
The Superstack is not your friend.
Sorry about the buzzkill.
On a lighter note, the Farmer\\\'s Almanac winter outlook is looking very positive for the NE, especially NVT.

And better yet, after two weeks of research and fence-sitting, I have decided to pull the trigger on a pair of 2012 Sir Francis Bacons. This ski could be a contender for the ultimate EC quiver of one. Sold my beloved Prophet 100s, thinking I was going to get the new P98, basically the same ski with early rise tip. Then I started reading about the new Bacons. The Farmer's Almanac forecast tipped the scales. Why not get a ski that is perfect for perfect conditions and (theoretically) works well the rest of the time. Now the big question is length. 172 or 178? My P100s were 172 and they were ideal. I guessing that with the early rise tip and tail I should go a little longer. Any advice is appreciated (tech talk, I know).
OK, well, I've talked about trees, snow and skis, that about covers it. End of ramble.Last edited by Mr. Multiglisse; 09-14-2011 at 06:08 AM.

That probably wasn't me. I pulled into the mid-lodge around 2:40 snapped a couple of quick pictures and then headed up the toll road.
The white birches on Burke are concentrated between 2250 and 2600 feet. You can see this region from my house circled in the picture below. The birches are dying all the way around the mountain and it is sad to see. When I first saw the dead birches statement I immediately thought "you should see Jungle" but Kingdom-Tele beat me to it
Jungle is the most obvious die back section just left of center in the circled area.

Edit:
Quick question - Does the goggle polish remove scratches? I've got some doozies from tree branches and trying to brush off snow/ice with my gloves.
Not gonna bother with a boot until I get new boots. Can you do my helmet instead. I want to sparkle.Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

multiglisse: i would go a bit longer. i went from salomon guns in 175 to shoguns (early rise) in 182 and they're great. can't wait to shred frost & rocks on the old guns though
attn montreal mags, Jay passes will be available at IF3 for $70 off. Apparently, this makes student passes $200(!?). I probably won't try to scam one and will instead hike and buy $42 tickets from WAX in Mansonville. Also thinking about the Sutton Friday pass for $145+tax.
