TR: Highland Lakes, September 4, 2011

Sometimes patchskiing involves a lot of effort to make a few turns on questionable snow. Yesterday was not one of those days. I went with gone2alpline and jla415 to Highland Lakes. There we found an easy approach to good smooth snow that was well worth doing multiple laps on.
It took less than half an hour of a relatively easy hike to get to the base of the Upper Patch.

jla415 "grooms" our run by slipping and spraying the corn:

    gone2alpine follows:

    Vets enjoying their "grooming" efforts:

    jla415:

    gone2alpine starts above the clouds...

...and sprays corn below the clouds...

gone2alpine and Vets head up the ever improving bootpack for more:

Vets heads down the same run since they did such a good job of mid-day grooming:

gone2alpine nearly duplicates his previous run:

jla415 wins the award for the biggest spray of the day:

    gone2alpine on the Middle Patch:

    jla415 descends toward Highland Lakes:

    Vets follows further down:

Looking across Highland Lake up at the snow patches below Hiram Peak...

    ...looking up at another angle...

Great company and smooth snow made for a wonderful day.
We made September turns with ease and grace and joy.

    nicely done.
i'm betting the lowest patch would be much bigger if all the campers didn't keep coming with wheelbarrows to lug it away to their camp sites.

Awesome pics Vets and thanks again for taking the lead. Happy to point the Blue Taco in the direction you think is best. Yesterday was beyond belief for September patch skiing.

    KKNA Shirt sighting

Nice. It seems like a long time since we have seen that much snow in the NorthEast.

The upper patch still should be skiable. The lower patch is likely to be separated into a few pieces though. There are a few chutes on the looker's left ridge of Folger Peak that might also be skiable.

Tahoearmada, I skied The Nipple yesterday. The east ridge is now separate patches, but the snow is still pretty good. I did recon on the backside (south facing) patches and they are still holding snow. I didn't hike the extra 20 minutes to ski them though when I heard thunder rolling in. I hope to post a little TR soon.
