The mank is good for me. Not sure if I can make it up for another week, and by then we should be back into a snowy run.

Lots of wet slides -small but big enough for a ride- at squaw and alpine tue/wed. Alpine had a lot of terrain closed yesterday because of it.
The snow was slow and about as sticky as it gets. It was fun skiing about as fast as possible and not really worrying about losing control. The slush bumps weren't too far from water skiing, fun for straight lining.

^^^That has been around for a few weeks, and honestly, it is a good thing. There is no mellow entrance off 10, especially this season. In fact, the main ramp in has been far more congested than usual with entire groups wondering what to do next. My favorite accident I viewed was when someone dropped onto the very first bump, double ejected and slid all the way down to just above Buckboard, and the skies remained perfectly sitting on top of the first bump. Not sure how that happens.

    Que? Really???
    Not that we noticed.

Patrol did close Our Father, Counterweight, etc., at around 2. I guess because of the Pinwheels(?) that chased you down the slope (avoidable once you knew about them).
Other than that, I think the Ridge Hikes were closed, and High Traverse. That was it, no?
Oh, wait, the Ice bar & Chalet were closed. Is that what you mean?

Actually, it looks like they are planning on spinning Lakeview soon.
Some pretty f*ckin awful "grooming" from the ridge down to the lift there.

    Weirdest Site?
A group of about 20 people putting on skins at the bottom of Winter Road, off Scott.
Seemed like a tiring, dangerous option to be out in the BC right now (although there are some lovely slopes on the lookers left there)

Lakeview is going to open this weekend. At least that's what AM's Facebook page says.

I hope they close it again on monday... already way too many knuckleheads going back to munchkins. The lift wont help that any. I was ridin back there on monday and came across 3 groups of 6+ people without avi gear, on one of the deepest snow days of the year with a deep reactive layer and warming... I really wish we could adopt the montana backcountry policy of beacon check points, it would really help keep the kooks out of the bc

I think this says just as much about how many Kirkwood skiers see themselves as it does about how they see the typical Heavenly and N* skiers.
Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood all share a couple of things that make them all pretty damn similar actually. They are all ski resorts with chairlifts, ski patrols and have risk management departments.
But if this sign makes you feel even more CORE, or even HARD CORE, then good for ya'all.

And after enough drinks dudes with feathered hair that are right out of the late 70's start dancing in ski boots with sluts. That's friggin CORE!

and that in a nutshell describes how heavenly pictures itself and portrays itself with it's marketing. a bar where you can ski.
and the only reason that sign existed was the lifties were sick of downloading people

I would say "but Heavenly has Mott and Killebrew" but the truth is 99.9% of the people at Heavenly never go near it. Was kind of shocked last Sunday when it was crowded to see only 2 or 3 other people around Mott, total.

I'm thinking the sign is actually necessary (on behalf of patrol) more so than trying to dig at N* & Heavenly.

it's not that heavenly doesn't have difficult terrain. they do. but there are no lifts where your easiest way down is a black.

Silverado at Squaw and Lakeview at Alpine just opened. For the first time this season. And both are on the schedule for the weekend. Thought you armchair skiers would want to know.

I just saw that Silvy was scheduled this AM, was kinda surprised Squaw didn't send out an email, usually they like to toot their own horn and act all proud of themselves for finally getting it open now that the conditions have turned to shit.

I am getting tired of having to yell at all of the people standing around by the fence at the top of Cornice. For some reason, they think that the middle of the unload ramp is a good spot to wait for their friends, or sit down and strap in. And they get argumentative when you yell at them to "MOVE".
And you know that the lift op's are frustrated with the stupidity.
Maybe another 5 or 6 "No Standing or Stopping" signs would get the idea across?

I've only started skiing Heavenly since Kirkwood was bought by Vail. I've been pleasantly surprised by how empty places like Mott have been, even if it does take some extra effort to lap them.

While I agree there is way too many people going into Munchkins without a clue, do you really think that having gear makes it ok for you to ski the same sketchy terrain you are ridiculing these people for? If something goes down to that buried weak layer, it doesn't matter what gear you have. I was tempted to check out Munchkins on Mon., but voices in my head told me it was not a good idea. Unnecessary, too, because inbounds delivered all day. But it's just a matter of time before something bad happens there, and it will likely involve multiple people, and even then people that shouldn't are still gonna go there.

Now they use the alert feature in the new Alpine and Squaw apps to send alerts. That's how I learned of it. Got both alerts within minutes of eachother.

Speaking of the new apps, a new version of each was released yesterday. Let's hope they're more stable. The way they've been, I find them pretty useless except for telling which lifts are running. They can't track you reliably worth a damn.

Plus, they're written by a French company so any error messages are in French - which probably isn't much different from the useless error messages you get in English, it is just more laughable since it is a long way to France from Squaw.

Oh, and the release notes on the new app are very helpful. It reads:
    What's New in Version 1.4?
    Improvement
That's it! It has an "Improvement" in it. Singular, not plural.

Tomorrow should be good times at Squaw with the Pain McShlonkey festivities regardless.

Definitely time to dust off the Bogner One-Piece Legend of the White Buffalo Special!!

Conditions report anyone? Still too warm for classic Tahoe March boilerplate? OR are things setting up pretty firm now?

MTBing in the flatlands is starting to look more appealing than camping out in 75MPH windgusts this weekend ...

^^^^^except that it's gonna be just as rainy/windy back in the bay this weekend and make mtbing sub par as well. It's a tough choice - I'm headed up but could easily have gone the other way.
