As I understand it Squaw has 90 acre-feet for snowmaking from their water district, while Northstar gets almost 190 from its water district. Sad that it matters.

With all of the doom and goom floating around, I took my kids up for their first day of the season (43 days later than when they started last season) with visions of icy wrod's dancing through my head...then an amazing thing happened, a fun ski day unfolded right before my eyes! I can safely say that Sugar Bowl does not have a white ribbon. We skied chalky mid winter goodness all day. Trees, cliffs, chutes, you name it! The top of Mt. Lincoln is north facing and completely shaded and holding the goods. No, this is not a wet frozen dream, see the pics below. I even ran into my uncle who is a patroler at Alpine. I haven't seen him outside of Alpine in 15 years. He said he had skinned all of the north lake resorts this week and Sugar Bowl wins for the best coverage.

Don't get me wrong, things are still grim up there but there is an amazing amount of fun stuff open all things considered:

The chute 2 /helmans area was fun to rip:

My little guy turns and says "dad, you said it was going to be icy, this is powdery!". My older son is getting some in the background:

This section was the funnest. Soft snow, hits, slots, the goods:

    Poking around:

Early season little dude air time:

All in all, not a bad first day for the boys and not a bad month number 25 for me!

I have been asking that question on Unofficial every day...Unofficial Alpine. Why the Unofficial Squaw boys aren't asking, I do not know...

Why did you just not get on the shuttle bus and ride over to Alpine from Squaw like the masses did?

Dang...that does look pretty nice. I need to talk to some people about locating a Sugar Bowl ticket this week. Nice work Kona.

Could have, I guess, but a friend with a N* pass wanted to ski over there on Sunday and they have half the mountain open. With the loaner work pass it was worth every penny...

Kirkwood 12/20 not free for everyone

Powdork posted about Kirkwood being free for the masses on Tuesday 12/20. But from Kirkwood's website: "FREE skiing & riding to our locals on Tuesday December 20th as a thank you for their continued support! Full time residents of Amador County, Alpine County or Eldorado County just need to present their local ID at the Season Pass Office."

I'm planing to drive up that day with my son, who is home for college. I was going to leave him at cabin in and ski Heavenly in the afternoon on my pass, then ski with him on Wednesday. This almost made me change plans to leave earlier so we both could do Kirkwood for free, but unless somebody with a pass and local ID who is going to be there anyway wants to hook me up, I'm back to original plan. I'll gladly provide a sixer for each hookup.

    C'mon Maaaaan

This snow is just rediculous!!! Out of a need for distraction I started sifting through the Squaw Snowfall tracker reports. While they may be fluffed a bit, there is no fluffing how horrible this snowfall is! No season, going back to '98 has less than 50 inches at 8200 feet....this year it is 26 inches!!! WTF?!?!

It is a shame when KW needs to resort to a marketing trick (Airbag) that is usually reserved the Poconos in PA!

This is seriously screwing up my mental health. I saved EVERY vacation day I had for work hoping to use them in December. Looks like i'm gonna lose almost all of 'em. Frown.

funny you should say that. i was thinking when they first announced snowglobe that we always get a big storm right around new years. i think the promoters want snow but i don't think they have a clue about what big storms can do up here. they seem confident they can pull it off but if it does snow a foot an hour for a few hours during the festy it is getting shut down no doubt about it. plus all the djs are going to have a difficult time getting here so expect plenty cancellations. it just has the potential to be a real shit show i think. that being said i hope it works out as i have tickets and lots of friends coming up for it. my first new years in tahoe since i moved here 13 years ago so i'm kind of excited about it. i drove by the athletic fields yesterday to see if they started building the stage and all that and saw no sign of anything related to the event. i'd assume they at least need to put up some serious fencing to keep the ticketless out.

^ hahaha that sounds like Tahoe project management to me. I was in LA over Thanksgiving and they had bleachers and fencing for the New Year's Rose Parade already staged and partially set up by that time.

EDIT: didn't read the fine print about the $30 shuttle from the airport

There is no alternate venue either, so any chance on that morning of winds greater than 20 mph and precip and I bet the fire department shuts er down. I wonder what kind of coordination they have done with the police department on traffic management near the airport, parking attendants etc. My money is on shit show.

Oh yeah, and for those of you thinking about getting advance tickets, or if you already have, I'd call the promoter and ask them what their insurance is. I was supposed to go to an event like this on NYE 5 years ago in balmy Los Angeles - sure enough, a massive 3" rainstorm canceled the event. Those freaking promoters didn't even have the INSURANCE to refund any of the patrons! A lot of people never got their money back at all.

    and there's this
    BEYOND SUNDAY ALL
MODELS START TO DIVERGE WITH GFS BREAKING THE RIDGE DOWN FASTER
SUNDAY NIGHT ALLOWING AN INCREASE IN MSTR. MEANWHILE THE ECMWF IS
STARTING TO CARVE A DEEPER TROF INTO THE ERN PAC BY MONDAY WHICH
COULD POSSIBLY MEAN A CHANCE AT SOME PCPN BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT
WEEK. BUT THAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN.

Winter officially starts Wednesday, so now we can legitimately bitch and moan, right? With the first big storm that rolls in (which may be in February with the way things have been going) it's definitely going to be a shit show with everyone trying to get after it, that's for sure.

^^^^Huh? Just looked at that GFS run, and I don't see anything through the 3rd. I'd love to see this thing break down sooner, but someone needs to wash a lot of cars.

Just putting this in perspective. Winter patterns didn't end until June 5 or 6 this year, and the resorts had nearly full coverage on the 4th of July. Cut Winter some slack for starting a month late after a really short offseason of rest! I mean damn, she gave us two back-to-back 700+" seasons. If anything, be angry at Spring for only showing up a few weeks in January and then not at all after winter left. Winter is still all good in my book (for now).

In the meantime ... just make like Ottime and 213 .... the surf or singletrack is still killing it somewhere!

I learned a back flip on the air bag at Kirkwood. I'm pretty stoked on the season so far.

My last jump I attempted a switch front flip only to have both of the skis fly off and land on my neck.

Thing is fun as shit and gets me stoked. Here is a video if anyone wants to go through the trouble of imbedding it.

    Squaw has high hopes:

I'm sure there's snow on Shirley but getting there will be a nice walk.

from all indications i can gather about these snowglobe promoters, they are really flyin by the seat of their pants. i see a shitstormglobe happening whether it snows or not. i have a jobsite in the only neighborhood near the show so i've got free parking covered but i think buying a ticket is not even gonna be neccessary if u r ok w/ sneaking in.

tahoe weather discussion dude and howard both leaning towards a pattern change after the new year. grasping at straws weeks out????? yeah probably but some optimism is all we got
