Sorry for you. We skinned up Sugar Bowels to top of Lincoln. They are making snow and hope to have it open by Wednesday. On the way back down, there were pockets of ridiculous, better to stay at home and rub tiger balm on your nuts than ski absolute boilerplate, but damn, the pockets of fun, swishy fresh up to 4" was waaaaaay worth it. So thankful to Sugar Bowl for letting us skin there (instead of pulling an Alpine Meadows!). That barely kept my sanity through this dry patch. I have scheduled a trip to Utah this coming weekend so of course the dump is going to happen here. I hear it might snow there too though so hope you all get some while I'm gone. When I come back, I wanna see some winter going on!

A note to those into backcountry: anywhere the fresh from Sunday landed on old, hard snow from before, especially in shady, north-facing areas where the one inch will likely facet quickly these next few nights...watch out if the next storm comes in too cold. What we really need is a nice bit of rain at the beginning of that storm so everything bonds instead of sandwiching the Sunday cold snow between an old crust and a bunch of Sierra cement. This is less of a problem in areas that have no snow to begin with, but a layer of cold, faceted snow doesn't do a very good job of suddenly supporting a huge, wet load. At least, that's what your mom said.

Be careful out there -Also your mom.

If it comes like needed, that will get crushed pretty quickly. This thing ain't looking particularly cold. More like heavy and solid. Just as we need.

Dumped at KW last night. Could barely make out the ground through the snow.* Conditions were pretty fun there yesterday with cooler temps and the wind blowing. About as good as manmade gets on buckboard. A bit too much wind across Zachs, but there actually were about 50 feet of powder bumps at the top. Anyway.

Anyone thinking of maybe heading up this weekend from the South Bay area. Day trip. Not sure which day yet. Will depend on what falls, how, and when. Don't want to drive up for 6" and 90mph winds, but something different might entice. Headed to KW. Plan inbounds, but can get BC gear at cabin if the chairs don't spin or something.

*at least where they already had manmade.

Thanks to Vets for the BAF deal and my patrol hook-up. Owen and Krystal and I had a great day at Mammoth on Saturday. A bit windy, so O wanted to stay low elevation, but the snow was actually better down there. We had a great time. We usually don't get over there until May, June, July, so it was cool to get over 108 and 120 in Junuary.

It snowed a tiny bit in Yosemite Valley this morning....
    sorry

Thinking I'll work this weekend so I can take off Mon,Tues, and maybe thursday. If anyone is down to carpool from the 916 area I have alpine/kirkwood/sugar bowl. Any bets on how much terrain this storm will open up?

I hope you guys get it up there, as the report from Mammoth Mtn states "little snow accumulation" through Sunday. FML.

I miss that kind of flexibility. Strictly a weekend warrior this year, unless a relative who wants to hold the baby (and does not care about seeing me) comes into town. I'm just stoked it is going to maybe snow a little bit.

I teach a class in mountain weather at the Lake Tahoe Community College. I'd strongly recommend it to anyone here; it is a cheap and effective way to learn a lot in just a few days. Wait a second, they wouldn't want an expert to teach that, would they?

I've got a question for the south lake peeps. Does anyone have any ideas for cheap lodging in/around SLC on relatively short notice? A buddy & I are coming up next thursday to for an AVI 1 course and need a place for 3 nights. The cheapest I've found so far is the Motel 6 on Lake Tahoe Blvd. Is this the best I'm gonna be able to do? Any tips and/or tricks would be appreciated.

Thank you for prompting the need for a google search at such an early hour, and thusly bringing me to a reminder of how the Wikipedia Black-out can greatly impact my daily life. Merriam-Webster's hits must be going through the roof, today!
