Hit up Squaw today with my pops.
The green runs off of Gold Coast (pops is pushing 80 and likes to take it low and slow) were skiing well from opening until 10 when he took a coffee break and I split off and skied with Snowhot. Shirley and Granite Chief were skiing well after that. Eventually I hooked up with Corky and his lady and we skied Siberia and Headwall and it was decent spring cream cheese. Called it quits shortly after 2 and did the apres at High Camp and then Bistro 22. Good times.

KW was really not that bad today, 6 was already soft at 9:00 and skied consistent got sticky around 1:30 wagon wheel was good hit a couple of laps over there. Wall was more firm and waited till 10:30 to hit that, eagle bowel was already too slushy but then, but real quiet.

Skied East Face on Red Lake a little late on Saturday - which was 9:30. Can't skin the whole way anymore, but it's not bad. Bottom is already a bit of a bushwhack back to the road. If I did it again I'd do the avy gully down to the avalanche control area - but you can't park there yet. Round Top side looked to have a lot more covereage in terms of approach. Did notice some runnels had formed on most open slopes, especially under the Crescent on that side. I think a truth north facing aspect could be good before noon.
Then the mercury drops and things will smoove out again next week.

I've never skied Lassen, only hiked it. Does this mean what I think it does?

Never been to Lassen much less skied it and have been thinking the same thing. I think that gives us access to the parking lot on the north side w/~4000' of vert to the peak. Unfortunately a work assignment on the other side of the country means I might not be able to get to it for 3-4 weeks.

yah I got some touring plans next weekend, then work the following 2 weekends, so I won't be able to make it happen until May 19-20 weekend at earliest. Still, I've never heard of the road being open for shuttle laps in APRIL. Is that a sign of an uncharacteristically low snowpack there?

I don't think shuttle laps are possible as according to the park site they are set to start plowing from the southwest entrance tomorrow. Same site puts snow depth at Helen Lake at 145" from the April snow survey.

No shuttle laps. But, there is still probably snow to the north lot.

I shuttled it years ago, but we had to down hike a few miles. It is pretty low angle at that point, so no big deal.

I think the best years are the big years, when cool and snowy spring weather keeps the pack from melting out, but the park service wants to get the road busted through for summer. Then you can shuttle 2k of vert and still ski out to your car.

Dunno if it's old news or not but Alpine is supposed to start controlling out to grouse rock making it in bounds next season.
Also heard a whacky rumor that squaw is considering digging a tunnel to Alpine.

Anyone got a shop rec for someone who can repair a pretty compressed edge + delaminating cap on a cap construction ski? Hopefully down in the yay area, but I'm always skeptical of using local talent for big surgical operations like this one.

don't get me started with the cap vs. sidewall ... Voile made one of the lightest splitboards out there, but damn that thing is not burly like a Neversummer.

I would be skeptical of any bay area shop with that big of an operation.... but if you come up the hill I'm sure porters or start haus would do good work.

@SM: the only shop I even remotely "trust" in the Yay is Cali Ski on Gilman. Greg the owner seems to know his ish.
Other'n that, I only go to Start Haus. They be expensive, but they know their stuff like no other shop up here.

In terms of local conditions, I skied SB with pops today. He quit around 11 and I kept going until late after 1. Things were thick, but manageable. Sadly, Crow's Nest hike and O/B was closed, but I stumbled upon a large group of folks who had dug a half-pipe-like trench and were barbequing and partying on the boundary line. They did not offer me any bacon or brews, which I thought incredibly rude. Best runs in terms of consistent snow were lower angle joints like Jerome lift line and Graydon Glades, as well as the area between Blitzen & Mistletoe off of Christmas Tree. Everything over Disney way was heavy. WTF moment of the day was watching a couple in basic wedge christies coming down Silver Belt. Guess they missed the Double Black Diamond warning sign (though they were skiing with partners, so maybe they didn't). I averted them from sailing off a cliff near the bottom. Oh yeah, a Gumby was boarding in the park. When he zipped through the Jerome lift line a couple of instructors commented on the GSA being at the resort. When I said that Gumby was obviously training for Alaska they looked at me blankly. Obviously "GSA" at SB means something totally different.

On the drive up/back Old 40 got a good look at Poop Chute and it's still holding, as well as the ridge above up to Mt. Lincoln along the PCT. Apparently there was some sort of snowboarding "convention" there yesterday (according to one of the SB instructors I rode up the lift with). Plan to hit that this week.

DSR is still spinning, too, with $25 tix.

They were blasting for the tunnel this morning--we heard and felt it up at Donner Lake. (Actually it was a meteor.)

Yeah, I forgot about that - they have this german dude Hans or something who does the big operations and he uses good shit. But that place is PRICEY for repairs.

If I consider shipping this thing for repair, anyone got any ideas?

The edge is actually jacked in 2 places - one the heelside ski at each front and back binding position, but the cap is only delamming at the front. I almost wonder if an entirely new edge (not edge section, but entirely new edge along the entire half of the ski) is possible and/or preferred. Grrrr, that's the last time I ever ski a cap construction ski or board again. Too bad, I really liked my OG Burton Supermodel - what a fun ride.

Heard the boom this morning in T/D. It was loud and shook the house, but not in the same way that an earthquake does. I almost thought it was a dumptruck offloading a trash container up the street or a piledriver slamming into the tarmac. It was definitely strange sounding and feeling. According to the above story, Reno was the place to be to see the blazing sky.

    Skied this today:

There was someone bivouaced on top. He never woke up the whole time I was there. Wasn't tied in either. Guess he doesn't toss and turn much.

Skied all the way back to the car. Not much snow tho, and no freeze for a week straight. Don't think it'll last long.

Rick, glad I missed that. Almost looks like your taking a dump. Nice work.
