Spent the last 5 days skiing at Squaw. Monday and Tuesday were epic spring days and then the snow just started coming on Wednesday with Today being (sorry for the cliché) best day of the year. With light wind the entire mountain opened at 9am. Knee deep light POW everywhere. Was able to ski untracked POW on KT (Rock Garden) to Headwall (The Slot), Lap headwall (Hogsback and North Bowl) , Siberia, Broken Arrow (tower 16), Emigrant (Funnel), to Granite. It has been a while for me since the entire mountain opened on a day with snow flying. Wrapped up the day skiing pow with my 6 year old…praise ULLR.

Shralpine was powtastic yesterday. No hikes, but a nice traverse went out to the lower bowls and Keyhole opened late in the day. Road laps delivered.

The drive up late Thursday nite looked like this the entire way:

Hope it holds, skied from 6:00 AM to 1:30 and it was still holding, and yea a bit touchy, I kicked of two slab avalanches with ski cuts on steep pitch's prolly 40 to 45 degrees, all in all a super fun day.

Photo of the second one I kicked off, both had about a 2 foot crown, down to the bed surface, does not look steep from the photo, but it was.

if you didn't already sign up for your kirkwood tgr one for the road movie voucher, it's too late. kirkwood doesn't care that the way they require you to print the voucher no longer exists. they suggested i call tgr (where the coupon redemption page used to be) and straighten it. on a saturday morning powder day.

Jakes was nice today. Set off a smallish loose slide on a short but steep pitch. But it felt pretty stable on anything less than 38 degrees.

Was riding up Scott Chair with jla415 today when we saw Kevin O'Meara standing at the top of Scott Chute about to drop in the steep peppery entrance. Just as he was about to go the guy one chair behind us screamed, "There are rocks below you!". Gave us a good chuckle.

Super fun day today at Kirkwood. Beautiful day....not very crowded, great snow...if not nearly as deep as the day prior, but suuuuper fun. Lot's of untracked runs on Vista and Thunder Saddle vicinity.

Grabbed the first bombhole on Kodak and couldn't believe I was the only one off it, but then realized that maybe the Twisted Sister slopestyle comp had Kodak as part of their venue...so maybe it was closed?....really? Nah, couldn't be, there were no closed signs coming from the Saddle area. Oh well, I then had to go back up and hit it a second time (this time with SuPu) since I was still the only bombhole off of it This time, we get yelled at by a patroller who said it was part of the venue. How the fuck are we supposed to know? Well, too bad, should have been closed signs there or something...did they actually expect people to not hit it from the other side on a powder day?? This is Kirkwood.....c'mon.

Stuff was starting to get pretty sun baked and set-up after 12:30-ish. Still good turns in the Saddle and the upper part of the Wall and Funnel area as the winds in those areas seemed to be keeping things cool and chalky even though they were heavily tracked.

PS - Anyone else see the kid dropped off a chair on Roundhouse on Friday??? Looked like a blanket catch so I'm assuming s/he is ok. Dad might not be so lucky once Mom hears the story, but props for hanging onto him as long as he did.

rolled with the Dodge Ridge race monkeys today - great energy from a mob of chillens hootin' and hollerin' flinging their meat and generally ripping the shit out of everything in sight

at one point, I looked up after hearing some sorta commotion, and saw a bunch of 'em assisting/heckling a couple who were cliffed out - it looked like the old Monkey Island at SF Zoo, except they were flinging skis off the cliff rather than poop - I was impressed with the self rescue from a bit of a dodgy perch

I watched Owen hit a few 6'-8' drops, and get rescued by the set of 10 year old triplets on our team after a hudge wreck - great to know the big kids have his back

    super fun day
    sorry

They had closed signs from middle cirque down to about 50 yards above the kodak trees

Not in the morning, not from the Thunder Saddle side. Or if they did, (if they were 50 yards above the Kodak trees) they were extremely easy to ski under without being noticed. i.e. If you skied Hell's or Soul Searcher and then took a diagnonal cut over to the top of Kodak.

I did see them later in the day, in the afternoon though. When I started from higher up (i.e. under and just past the Egg).

I did not see the incident directly, but was stuck near the top of Roundhouse during the incident, and came up on the scenes as soon as we were down. Saw pics of the incident too. She was dangling roughly 15 feet from the ground. Smooth work by patrol and bystanders for sure. Heard she was a she around 7-8 years old.

And as for today...i was not quick enough on the camera. I had a chance for "gaper of the year" photo...it may have even rivaled the GSA picture. But when i took out the iPhone it went into Facetime mode. By the time I switched it it was clear i needed a video camera.
So here's the description. Dad snowplowing down Rock Garden with a 5 year oldish boy between his legs in front...and a seven year oldish girl hanging on right at the rear. The entire triple pizza combo was moving down Rock Garden at about 0.03 mph. This was the part where I pulled out the camera...at which point Dad fell backwards on the girl, with the boy on top - Dad sandwich. Dad's DINs were set at like 3 so he immediately popped a ski...with no functioning brake. The last I saw the ski, it was headed rapidly downhill toward ABC. I started getting dirt looks from surrounding family so I put the camera away and bailed. It was quite the sight.

I didn't see the incident, but my good buddy was one of the 3 heroes that broke the girls fall using their jackets to catch her. It was actually the mom who was holding onto the girl from falling until she couldn't hold her anymore and had to let go. Ski patrol came by right after the girl dropped and rewarded all the guys who were involved with the save with an "alpine meadows pat on the back." The lift op guy was sheltering himself inside from the snow & wind totally oblivious to what was going on outside with the lift. According to my buddy, he should've stopped the lift much earlier than he did.
