    Actually, really only Summit.

Whereas spring skiing at Squaw requires both a lift to get you out of the 6200' base and something to actually ski. (Yes, I know, KT can be money, but it's much more of a crapshoot.)

Ugh - that hadn't even occurred to me. A bad snow year gives them an excuse this year (nevermind that March delivered), I was thinking, but hoping this doesn't become the norm. What you're saying makes sense so that's probably going to be the case.

Spring skiing at Alpine is not such a bad deal. Wide open bowls that don't get too bumped out and all 4 exposures--assuming they run Sherwood and Scott and keep high T and Beaver to Buttress open and assuming the snow holds out.

In years past patrol has sometimes closed runs at Alpine when they got too slushy--as early as 10am, although that was before DST was moved back--to keep things from bumping out, same way Smoothie is managed. Whether they'll do it this year who knows. In any case, once it stops freezing at night spring skiing is pretty much done. I remember skiing Beaver central couloir on Memorial day, the chute was fine but the bowl below was severe suncups--upside down moguls. Not fun.

Kirkwood delivered today snowing most of the day, backside was mostly open and got cold in the afternoon. Pali was very untracked and held up all day. There was probably 200 people on the entire mountain... Must be soccer season and I hope you all have games this weekend.

No soccer, but other plans here. It is in fact, soccer season, but I know of at least two families who plan to shine the games and head up for some powder.

And the weekend looks okay at best. Another warm up is in play Saturday. The mrs. asked if I wanted to postpone out trip and get a day in Saturday, and it just did not seem worth it with the drive looking like SC->KW->SC->Pal Springs in two days. If I could get out of the house I would have been there today through Friday.

Friday looks like a good day to be out skiing for sure.

As for the Squaw/Alpine thing, that was easy to see coming. Too bad they can't spin KT until the base wears thin and keep Summit spinning until a bit later. That would be a pretty nice combo. And I bet things get a bit more bumped up this year at Alpine, but not too bad. High Yellow will still require a good hike, and a lot of folks just are not up to that. Peril, OTOH, could get wrecked.

I'm hoping that Vail sees KW as an alternative to KSL and starts a move to keep lifts spinning on weekends until the snow is gone. Sure, we will miss out on frontside skins, but the hikes will stay pretty smooth anyway.

I thought they already said they will keep the lifts spinning weekends until the snow is gone. i know people were cynical about what would signify all the snow being gone in kirkwood's eyes, but who cares as long as they make an honest effort. it doesn't have to be like donner ski ranch (where the owner drives you to the open lift in his truck and often has a 30 pack sitting at the top for you to enjoy), but it wouldn't hurt to have a plan now that could allow them to move some snow around to the base of the lifts they want open (10 and 11 please).

Hey Mike when does DR close? I might have to swing by town and get some skiing lessons from Throwin Owen?

really cold and windy this am at da cp. almost turned round at the trailhead but we perservered and managed to get some exercise and freeze our asses off. both of us forgot our goggles so trying to ski the upper mtn was tough to say the least. maybe an inch at the TH but snow amounts increased as we ascended. a good foot in the lee and stripped in the windward and very slabby above 8.5k. brrrrrrrrrrrr. tomorrows gonna be good

I guess I mean in years to come. I'd be fine with not a whole lot of effort this year, if they were to make a push in the future.

Maybe even build an ice bar in the good years. And yes on 10/11 being the best choice, although if it is 5/6 the corn field known as the Wall can gt quite nice.

oh, and T plus like 8 hours. But it does look like the passes are going to be posted up within the hour...
