By carefully observing the picture, you may notice a rather, ah, prominent anatomical feature present on the traditional statuary depiction of the tanuki.

Anyone got a kookweed report from this afternoon? I took a gander out at Carson Pass where I would say absolutely ZERO inches of snow has accumulated since the weekend. I'm guessing snow totals were significantly higher the closer to the crest and further north you were, yes? I did notice chain controls were up for the spur though.

watching the radar it simply didn't make any progress south of hwy 50 all day. even now it's still very spotty down there. it was making it to silver lake. i wouldn't be surprised if the chains were for the western slope more than the actual spur.

The bulk of the storm never got here. It was like a wall stopping the mass. It snowed lightly all day, with wind. The lee side of the gullies were a blast. The ridge tops were blown clean. Pali did not open. They took up a full chairload of explosives right before closing. One extra box got to be carried on his lap...
There is snow in the air right now, but I believe that it is just blown snow. My expectations are dropping.

Snow sticking to the road above 6500. Lots of Caltrans out, but not much for them to do. There's a couple inches in the parking lot, and grass indicates maybe 4 since the weekend. 30 degrees.

As of 6:10am, Alpine is reporting 24-hour snowfall of 15" on the lower mountain and 21" on the upper. They're also claiming a snow depth of 100" on the upper mountain, which -- IIRC -- is the first time we've gotten to triple digits this season.
NOAA appears to be getting more optimistic on snow levels, particularly for the potential big dump Friday night. We'll see.
Please play safe, y'all.41 days 2012-13

alpine says 21 upper mountain, squaw 15, which is consistent with what has been reported all season--alpine always shows more than squaw--depends on where they measure I guess. And we all know that the actual number for snowfall and base depth is meaningless, especially this season, with the winds moving a lot more snow than what actually falls. Besides--do you think anyone has been up high to actually look this morning?

me: So, even though the cabin is booked, I think I have a place to stay Saturday night.
wife: Wait, so you are planning to stay for two days? (pause) And leave me alone wit the baby all weekend? (pause) When I have a ton of grading to do?
me: Uh, yeah. That was the plan. You said that was fine last week...
wife: Oh. (long pause). Well, did I tell you I am taking Thursday as a grading day? So, I'll be home, grading.
me: Cool. So I can ski Thursday as well?
Don't think I played that well, so I bought beef for dinner, and will get chocolates for dessert and might even buy some flowers for the table.
Just hope I can get up there Saturday morning.Last edited by Ottime; 03-14-2012 at 08:20 AM.

Rose is closed. Squaw upper mountain reported as closed. Gotta go before it warms up and turns to glop at Red Dog and KT.

orographic?
[nerd quip]
othography is about projecting a 3D object onto a 2D surface, or describing something as a projection onto a given orthogonal basis (x/y/z or r/theta/phi, etc). Wait until you get into orthonormal function spaces, that's the best kind of math out there! [/nerd quip]

Kirkwood chair 6 open before 09:00 on a fresh snow day? It's becoming a pattern. God bless Vail Corp!
Snowing pretty hard now too.
