Just heard about the avi near alpine on the radio. RIP Vibes to family and friends.
Skied Alpine yesterday with a few mags all of us beeping in bounds not looking to get out at all given the conditions and avi report for the day.
In 6 seasons of weekday (Tue-Thur) riding at Alpine I have never seen a line so long at Roundhouse. Though we were still finding untracked. Not sure where they were all skiing but was glad it was not where I was.
I hope it did not all bake out today.
Took out the Wootests for the first time wed/thur and had a blast on them. I will post full review in that thread over the weekend.Drink to remember not to forget!

It was a similar case at kirkwood. Lines were long but I was finding fresh pretty easily. It was pretty easy to pick out the epic pass holders. I came on the lift from the singles line with three dudes with s7's, super 7s and bents. I was riding my ehp's and there were 3 snowboarders behind us who were yelling about how huge my skis were? Also I've never smelt more weed smoke than I did at kwood on Thursday. Not that I'm against it it's just apparent that the heavenly crowd has taken full advantage of the transferable pass........
Also Vibes to the family of the victim.Last edited by SkiNebraski; 03-02-2012 at 05:18 PM.

I'm calling bullshit for two reasons. Weed being smoked at Kirkwood and you're blaming the heavenly crowd? You've been to Kirkwood before, right? Second, there's plenty of people on 105 - 125mm+ skis at Northstar and Heavenly every day and you don't hear any of this "woah those are big skis" talk like it's 2008.

Good day to stay away from the crowds:

I think this still sums up the last 2 days pretty well for me. I was legitmatley sick and off work and somehow managed to drag myself up up for 1.5 days. Well worth the misery I'm in right now!

crowds?
i never saw anyone all day, except the random weed smokin, heavenry skiin, fat ski totin hitchhiker on the way up to the pass
dug a pit (well as good as a one armed guy can dig) in the mini golf zone by carson pass. was very deep and everything was consolidated pretty well down to 4 feet. then there were two bad layers at 4' and 5'. tough to get it to fail though but there is still a lot of spatial variability with this low pack.powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.

random????
saw no signs of instabilities,......but i was a complacent cali skier today so this observation only stems from the fact that i am here to type this. kinda pushed my risk tolerance today.

patrol at Rose got what looked to be at least a 4' crown near the top of El Cap - ran down to the flats - they did end up opening the rest so it couldn't have been that bad but it was kinda sobering to see it when I went right down the gut there on Tuesday! I guess with the wind that could have been everything that fell Wed/Thurs + windloading but the only crust would have been from pre-Monday???

I have NEVER seen Heavenly as crowded as it was today. Not even during the Xmas-NYE shitshow. Stagecoach lot was full before 8:40 and the gondy line was out to The North Face before it even opened. I think everyone in Tahoe took the day off to ski.
But at least we've got early December coverage in March

SugarBowl was actually pretty mellow... The only line at all was on Lincoln and that was pretty short. I spent most of the day testing out my Voile BC Vectors in the slackcountry trees on Mt Judah down to Lake Mary... Those skis are going to be a ski patrol's nightmare. Even in dry light snow they climb pretty well, so it's very easy to talk yourself into skiing things that maybe you shouldn't. Ski patrol will have to rethink how they open gates. Just opening lower gates isn't going to work anymore.
Secondly, people w/o any kind of climbing ability will follow your tracks. By the end of the day I was even starting to feel sorry for all the snowboarders that had to posthole out because they followed my tracks. But it was a sunny nice day and the snow was only waist deep, so they got a good workout.
Shaded north facing trees in a wind deposition area are going to be money the next couple days. But the hollowness underneath is pretty scary... If anything goes it's going to go big.

So I checked out the new Epicwood resort yesterday and that place had like no grooming, slow old lifts and lots of folks heckling the good people of Vail. It was almost as bad as that place Alta.
And upon further inspection, I did find a rock.

Fun Fun day yesterday. Peace out and thoughts to the friends and fam of the skier we lost on Wednesday. This powder day is dedicated to you.
Crew: Me, mildbill, dblatto, dlpress, miss dlpress, Ottime, J, S, + splinter crew Arty, lph, hardrider

The car park was full by 8am. I've never seen so many minivans and plus-sized ladies on skinny skis here at KW. Stage 2 of The Epic invasion had begun. Most of the tallboy-drinking, jizzrag-wearing Northstar/Heav Epic crew from yesterday got my memo to GTFO.
On the first run. mildbill, dblatto and myself devirginized funnel for the season. Then it was over to 10, where Mildbill did a first descent off Kodak.

"CRRRRUNCH" goes the noise that can be best described as a "Volvo hitting a brick wall"
It was SO FUCKING RAD that it stopped the KT chair on the other side of the lake

Then we got a bunch of laps on the backside hitting shit off ******* and ********* and ********* that had been previously undoable due to the niggardly snow totals of the 11/12 season.
When that was pillaged we went all piled in the car and drove to Northstar as payback. That'll teach them.

okbye
