2011/2012 Canadian Rockies Roll Call and StokeThread...

    Oh yes I did.

It hailed massively on my lawn yesterday, and I found myself wondering what ski would be best for those conditions...

So I wandered around the house in my ski gear. Pretty stoked.

    Is it winter yet?

I start out up high as the grey blur of pixels inbetween the slot of trees. White room turns up high, into surfy turns at the bottom, in 1.5 meters of snow that fell in about 48 hours...warmup run in early January 2011 at the horse.

It properly snowed on me at work last week. Couple cms of accumulation. Melted off the next day.
Flying the Bluehouse colors in Western Canada! Let me know if you want some rad skis!!

Snowed on me last Monday as we broke down our tent at 1900m ....it's coming. Hopefully my first turns will be in 1 month from now, after I get back from work. If this were last season, then my first turns would be in 2 and a half weeks, but i'll have to wait until I get back from my next shift on the 20th...hopefully it lines up with some of the first snowfalls. ....last 2 seasons have been that same week anyhow, 3rd times a charm.

make sure they're public. i.e., shared with "everybody". also make sure you're linking to the photo directly, not your profile view of it.

Fernie will gain some serious terrain with a lift up Polar Peak

    http://live.tetongravity.com/_News-S....html?as=75233

Once the snow is cleared, Fernie Alpine Resort, began construction of the new Polar Peak Lift with the completion date ready for skiers and riders to enjoy in the 2011/12 winter ski season. The Polar Peak lift is the only major new lift installation in the BC Rockies for this winter and one of a few new lift installations in North America. It is believed that it is the only new lift installation going to a mountain top for this upcoming winter.

The Polar Peak Lift provides quick access to the various ridge-lines above the major alpine bowls. This quicker access for Ski Patrol will speed up efforts to open up terrain following the regular snowfalls Fernie Alpine Resort receives.

Don't expect much for solid snow coverage in October, it's very hit and miss and you have to know where to go to maximize it, and expect to put some good shots in your bases. September some times gives up a few good days if you hit right after the snow then melts off mostly, then same for October, November is typically very thin and then gets better from there. Preseason snow can still be pretty dry here which doesn't really keep you off whatever it's sitting on. Smooth surface underneath is a must. Typical scenario is some thing along the lines of, get a dump in September, get some good although rocky turns in hope that it's wet enough to keep you off the ground, get hopes up, October that snow that was so great is gone for the most part either melted off or blown away, get desperate, go further up, find some more turns...repeat until November, repair ski bases yet again, escape to Rogers Pass to be able to rip a bit etc etc

You're welcome to join on some early season shenannigans, but expect to trash your bases and skins and hit rocks.
I have a pre-season video that should give you an idea of what rockies early season is like. This covers the good pre season days, then the shit out immediately after once you get your hopes up and all the snow almost dissapears in October, but eventually as November progresses it starts getting consistent.

^lol....when transitioning unroped on thin snow covered glacier I don't take my skis off and stand on foot. Yes, I probed before taking the rope off but still.....

Red... so really I shouldn't even be hanging out in this thread. Probably pick up one of those LL/KH deal cards (snowmax is dead now hey?) however.

Any details on these yet? If it's the same terms as last year it's a good way to not just ski one spot all season. I'll get one either way but hopefully no major changes.
