hey mustang you can't really go wrong with dukes. (I've got barons). No shortage of people who tour in fernie but I could show you a spot or two near calgary when you get your bindings.

Edit: They fixed that "binding slop" by now I think. Its a heavier setup than dynafits but pretty durable I think.

Heading to Fernie tonight and Thunder Meadow cabin tomorrow. Anyone got any beta?

Cabin bowl is the safest route up but also the longest. Be sure to hop to the left side of the ridge on the way up in to Cabin Bowl.

A high traverse through the bowls from the top of the lifts, and then climb up and over Orca is a great way to get in there if avalanche conditions are favorable, and over the back of Polar peak and down then up easy street is really fast but also a death trap in less than ideal conditions. There was another way that Huckineh and Shadam went in that hopped over the ridge to the back before Big Steep Mother and they beat us there by about 3 hours when we took the Orca option, but again you need good conditions and it sounded a bit less straight forward then some of the other options.

The Billy Goats will have a touring model for '12/13, more carbon fibre, less weight. I would assume less damp as a trade-off. I want too many skis, but can not afford

Hey guys, anyone looking to go touring/hit some slack in the LL area. I'm quite the newb at it so looking for some more experienced people to go with so I can learn and what not. I'd rather not go on some massive mission and hold anyone back but if your just looking for a fun walk and some good turns I'm keen and free all week. ^^btw sorry for double post but should obviously mention I have all the gear and have taken my AST 1 just don't have much actual experience, been out about 4 times this year.

IM in the same boat. Big thing i have learned( im two years in bc skiing ) is that group dynamics is the biggest piece of the Bc skiing puzzle. You may have a hard time finding people who will take you out just because its a big liability for their own safety. So don't get offended . its not personal.

That being said i am always keen on smaller less exposed tours until i build up my own confidence, so if you ever have a tour in mind send me a pm.

IM in the same boat. Big thing i have learned( im two years in bc skiing ) is that group dynamics is the biggest piece of the Bc skiing puzzle. You may have a hard time finding people who will take you out just because its a big liability for their own safety

Group dynamics is HUGE. On anything more than meadow skipping we limit our group size to 4 people to limit the everyone is on a different programme factor. Always keep the red flags in the back of your mind and if the person you are with starts ignoring any of them question them on it. Watch their reaction too...if they are put out by you asking questions that involve your well being then fuck em their not worth learning from.

...can't hurt to do a beacon drill with the person whoever it might be, you might be shocked at what you discover. I beacon drilled a guy that had been b.c. skiing for a few years and he didn't have a clue how to find the beacon. The real eye opener was checking again a year later and he still didn't have a clue. Absolutely horrifying, and this is a person who would not have any issue passing himself off as very experienced ski this and skied that gets out lots and had been leading another individual as the decision maker for a long time. Huge valuable learning experience for me on how people present themselves... Might piss the person off when they read it, but as I said it was a valuable learning experience for me which is why i'm sharing it.

That sounds pretty dangerous. My take on this is that there's always going to be an opportunity to learn how to do something better, whoever the person is (myself included). I suspect I'll probably make some sort of newbie remark when I finally get a chance to ride with some of you though.

Pointed out a line from the car just last week that I was saying looked like it would be sweet to hit. Started going on about how great it would be and was quickly heckled cause I had just been there the previous week hah.

Well thanks a lot for the info guys. Bigger groups always seemed like a problem to me even just with the potential for was more people getting buried in a worst case scenario, plus everyones on different levels and opinions. Lamothe I'd be keen to hit up some slack in my area got a few lines in mind, such as purple bowl at Louise. Only issue is the Avy danger is hitting considerable a/t/bt For the next 3 days after tomorrow. If you new any good lines around sunshine i'd be down to hit them up would just need some heads up to arrange transport and what not. Thanks again guys really appreciate the responses

Now we get to ski free with our pass at Fernie, Nakiska AND Kicking Horse for the remainder of their seasons. Nice bonus from RCR to add KH already this year.

Looks hot all week. Next storm is warm and wet. I'm thinking its time to unpack the iceaxe and start thinking about bagging peaks.

Sorry I didn't get to ski with any of you this season. That group dynamic thing is a real biatch.

Easier to first ski with people at a resort and get to know them, then maybe get invited on some tours when the numbers allow, and if you're compatible.

Consider it ski speed "dating."

March and april at KH. Lots of powdery trees, lots of powdery alpine, and even lots of bluebird pow. Late season delivers!

Youtube wanted to change the lighting somehow because it detected poor lighting. If it looks all screwed up, let me know. It said it would take some time to process.

I just spent the past 4 days at Fernie, conditions and coverage were very good. Even the lower half of the mountain is in excellent shape, usually by this time of year the lower third is sketchy and/or has patchy coverage. Originally I was thinking that was it for me there this season, however I may head up next weekend since conditions were so good.

Been taking the camera out lots the last few days, so here's some more from today. Started early and ended early due to the heat. Snow was nice....really really nice, just had to watch aspect.

thank fark my crew knows when to turn around, its the most important trait a sledder can demonstrate, coz fark our sleds go everywhere. (I just bagged a 2550m peak yestdy)
and as for tranny searches !!! I don't think most sledders have had their beacon in search mode all season, seasons perhaps.

any-hoo ... I thought I'd take a day off, the 20ft snowboard drop yestdy tweeked the body.

Perhaps i'm reading your post wrong but conservative decision making and patience keeps you alive in this snowpack. If you approached terrain on this side of the divide regularly the same as you do on the other side you'd be dead 10x over by now. Things are coming in to shape here but it's stupid to rush them. Plenty of days in complex avy terrain lately...there's time and place. People are remote triggering slides still despite the "moderate" rating and all you have to do is take a look around at some of the dick waving terrain around here to see how much of it is still sliding lately.

That's hardly something to be proud of cause it kind of sounds like you're talking about beacon checks or practice sessions?

Anyone ever bought lift tickets from Kijiji? I found one for Lake Louise (planning to go on saturday) that appears to be unused from Costco. (ticket still glued to that sticky paper, unfolded, etc.), but I'm worried it's somehow fake.

Cycling. Now that's freagin riskier than backcountry skiing. Way riskier. Then again, if you trigger a slide this time of year, its all coming down. SO LOOK OUT!! ITS SCARY!! RUMBLE.

So being my first hut trip is there anything i really don't need to bring ( seems like im bringing everything i own) or and anything i really should forgot ( other then the obvious)

It's standard practice to bring too much on your first bunch of trips. Later you'll be able to decide what items were unnecessary and lighten the load.

I'm a list geek, since it helps me organize gear and avoid the inevitable trip where you forget your sleeping bag or toilet paper.
