Karma Project Bike - The votes are in and it's time to reveal the players!

First and foremost, I would like to once again thank the companies and all the Maggots that made the Karma project bike happen. This project never would have gotten off the ground without the generosity of the people and companies that donated their cash, their time and their parts.

So I already closed the voting and declared a winner in the Cast Your Vote thread, but who, you ask, are the people behind the anonymous entries.

To his credit, the Maggot that submitted entry #1 wants to remain anonymous. But you know who you are and you did a good thing by submitting an entry on behalf of our winner. Thank you.

Entry #1 is Zig, the son of our very own and much loved Snowsprite. Do you want to know how will Zig find out about his new bike? Snowsprite and I collaborated on a plan and it goes something like this:

Sprite had to pick up her son at the bike shop where he works this afternoon and she was able to talk with Zig's boss in private and explained what's going on. Apparently Zig's boss was REALLY stoked and impressed and of course will help coordinate the surprise. Since Zig's boss will be out of the country when the AS-X arrives, he will have one of Zig's co-workers set the whole thing up with "Hey Zig, you need to build this bike" and then the bike will end up being his own!

I shipped the AS-X this afternoon. I only wish I could be there to see the look on Zig's face when he finds out he has a new bike!

    Entry #2
Otter submitted an entry on behalf of his brother and what I gather is a good friend.

    Entry #3
    Self submitted.

    Entry #4
Steven S. Dallas and mildbill submitted separate entries on behalf of s.p.c.
(He's never responded to me, but based on a PM I received from Steven S. Dallas I believe he was responsible for the alias votes cast for entry #4.)

    Entry #5
Lev submitted an entry of his own. And for those of you who were wondering what bike Lev was riding, I will let Lev post a thread of his own. But I can tell you my reaction to the photo was Holy Shit!

    Thank you Maggots!

That is so so rad. As an old shop guy myself starting about the same age as Zig, I can't imagine what I would do/think/say if that happened. Umm...can somebody hide a gopro or something?

I was really amazed when the anonymous nominator contacted me to ask if he could place my kiddo as a candidate in the karma project bike (VERY aptly named!) poll. Not only that Inspector Gadget and others could come together and do something so awesome but also that "anon-maggot" would think of my son and reach out to nominate. Then again, this forum never ceases to amaze me!

During my time in the cube, you guys as a collective provided a lot of the diversion, support, information, and general ridiculousness needed to survive such an inhospitable environment. And in being a part of this place, I've seen so many good things come out of it...albeit the many cat-fights and nonsense. Mostly it's all in good fun, and the people here a lot of love and comraderie. I wonder if there is something about snow and bikes that just attract great folks! Must be.

In any case, I am very moved and want to extend a huge THANKS to everyone involved! My kid just came back from a mtn bike ride last night and I could just see how much enjoyment he gets out of it. I am totally stoked thinking how much more he will enjoy it riding a bike that can really perform! He is at that age and point of development in the sport that this will really make a difference.

I am going to talk w/ his shop buddy today to try and arrange that I can be there and catch things on video/photo. Otherwise one of the shop guys will get me the footy so I can post it up.

Also, my kid is registered here and I am sure he will come on in and say "Hey!" to everyone. I think he will be really surprised and super super stoked. Then again, since he was a young 'un he's been experiencing maggot good will and fun. In a sense he too may not be as much surprised as he is touched by the gesture. He really is a hard-working good kid, and this will give him a sense of recognition for that I think. He's taken the high road in life so far, and I want him to know he has credit for that. So many others choose not to, but he does and I hope he keeps on taking the good path.

Thanks for helping nudge him along in that direction and for TOTALLY making my day!

That is so awesome. Stoked to see how much better he gets on a real bike.

What shop does he work at Sprite?

Congrats to Zig! I'm pumped up for the TRs to follow. Can't wait to see that thing in action

As for pics of my busted up bike... I'm a little hesitant to post them up at the moment. I'm currently in talks with the manufacturer about getting a warranty replacement. The owner says he wants to get me on one of their new frames, so I guess we'll see. I can say for sure that the crash was gnarly: 4 frame fractures to be exact. The head tube was completely severed at the top tube and down tube junctions. That's basically how I hit my head on my front wheel. There were also fractures at the top tube and seat tube junctions; and also the seat tube and bottom bracket junctions. It was nutty.

So what's the ETA on Karma delivery? How far did you ship that thing, IG?

Jeebus Lev, that's a hell of a wreck!! Did the frame break, then wreck, or did the wreck toast the frame?

Yeah, like has been said and will continue to be said...what an awesome place- big props to IG and all who pitched in! Stoked for the SpriteGrom and the TR's to follow...
The blues has always been about taking your problems and turning them into something you can dance to, drink to and fuck to.
We're certainly not a blues band in any kind of purest sense, but to me Rock and Roll has always had it's roots in that tradition.

Went off small drop --> landed flat --> frame exploded --> I crashed --> ouch --> ibuprofen, ice, beer --> no bike for 2 months --> goodbye 2011 riding season (not entirely, my local riding crew has been kind enough to let me borrow their bikes from time to time)

Awesome to see this moving along so well. Would love to see a FKNA and Change for a Nickle sticker on the ride!
I'm guessing that since Zig is on here, nekkid Sprite pics are out of the question?

Should this thread be deleted so he doesn't accidentally come across it before the surprise??
Be careful about buying snowboard goggles for skiing. Snowboard goggles come in right eye and left eye (for goofy-footers) dominant models. This can make it hard to see correctly when skiing because you are facing straight down the hill, not sideways.

^^^ Was just thinking that, but didn't Sprite already say that he will be more grateful than surprised?

And Lev, good call on not revealing the manufacturers name if you are still in negotiations. Let us know how things go!

No worries...I can't imagine him logging in now. But he will once he gets the surprise! This is still sort of "mom's terrain." But I'll definitely let him know about the thread after the fact!

Cool, while being grateful is still cool there are very few moments (at least in my old ass days) where there is genuine innocent surprise anymore and would hate for that to be ruined!

Sprite and I were hoping the bike would arrive on Monday, but I think/hope the surprise will work on Tuesday in time for the shop post-work group ride.

Doesn't get any better than that. I can only imagine how cool it'd be to build some nice bike, find out it is yours, and then close up shop and go for a ride with the guys!

Sorry, i'm kinda nerding out on this thread. I'll shut up now.

    * Yes, I know, the bike won't arrive until August. This is no time to split hairs.
