Smashing Pumpkins - great band up to Melon Collie, shit after that.

Drudkh - great band up to Microcosmos, shit thereafter.

VanHalen - great band up to "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher" on 1984, total shit after.

Not a band but I nominate Stevie Wonder post (and including) The Woman in Red as the single biggest decline in musical genius ever.

GnR - Halfway into use your illusion I&II, or at least for half the songs on them.

Post (and pre-?) frusciante chili peppers, with a pass for BSSM

    Floyd, post-Waters

I'd say: U2 - great up to Unforgettable Fire (their best, actually), shit thereafter.

Some bands can do the completely-change-the-sound/genre-and-still-be-brilliant thing (like Ulver did) and some (like U2) can't.

Metallica: pretty good up to Master of Puppets, Justice had shitty production, total and complete shit after that.

Ozzy Osbourne - great with Randy Rhodes, unlistenable shit after the plane crash.

..and a couple that maybe didn't go to shit, but were never the same:

Rush - slow decline after Moving Pictures to Power Windows, haven't listed to any of the later stuff in years and years.

kd lang - after she abandoned country. Great voice still, can't stand the music.

They are artists , they must keep creating, a great album is a snapshot in time when "it all" works,by the time you hear the album its past tense

IMO when 'it all" doesnt work they should all go do something else, they should be thankful for what they had, and we should be thankful for what we got

how many artists went out on top so we never got to hear them suck ... Stevie ray,Jimmy Hendrix,Jim Morrison

One guy who has stayed cool going just about every direction possible entirely on artistic whim is Neil Young

do we still call em albums, I was talking to a youngish artist the other day who called them record's and I asked if he was kinda young to be calling them records ?

Blood sugar is solid, plus soul to squeeze came out around then. Coneheads soundtrack or not, it's a kick ass song.

Here's a good one: Syd Barrett. The guy went out - way out - then made (IMO) the best music of his career. And I think Piper is the best Pink Floyd album.

Speaking of Floyd: good up until Dark Side (starting to slip in places), horrible by The Wall. The more Waters dominated, the more they sucked.

I have to disagree. Mothers Milk was an awesome album and so was BSSM. After BSSM is when they started sucking balls.
I think you have me confused with someone who is far less awesome.

    ????

Back in Black was the first album after Bon died.

..or are you saying they were still good after Bon? 'Cause although they didn't completely go to shit, they were not the same without Bon.

It read to me that he thought BIB was Bon Scott.

And I agree it's just a silly nomination anyway.

Not a huge fan of post Bon Scott AC/DC. Brian Johnson's voice just seems so forced and overdone to me.

    Agreed.

I dunno, Chup- both Bowie and Neil Young have had hits and misses in their career (XXX-er, I challenge you to listen to Trans and tell me that is a good album), but overall their catalog is solid.

    My contribution:

Some may not be aware, but these guys actually made some decent underground hip hop records until this release. Bridging the Gap and Behind the Front had some bangers. And then along came Fergie.

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night, this album sounded like something The Frey would put out.
    Metallica - St. Anger.
