Question for the board PC police
What do you think is the reason you don't get bent out of shape about words like haole, gringo, gwailo, etc?
Is it because whites are the only group you AREN'T deeply prejudiced against, and therefore you don't feel the same guilt you do about words like jap, nigger, etc?
Or is it because you are so afraid of brown people that you don't know any/are too afraid to confront them?
Or is there some other reason for the glaring double standard?

Actually, it's because the white man has historically been the oppressor. Turn about is fair play.

Be honest, the only reason you started this thread is because it was the only way you could post those slurs and not look racist. But you REALLY wanted to post those really bad.
I think you have me confused with someone who is far less awesome.

nah. i was reading a football board and some guys were melting down because a guy used the word "jap"
and i was thinking what a mild slur that was, how you really have to be the type who looks for reasons to be offended for it to bother you
and i just got back from hawaii a couple weeks ago, not that i ran into problems, but i have heard plenty of stories, so that was on my mind
i dont need an excuse to use those words, i will use them whenever a funny situation arises. it helps that anyone who knows me knows im about as non-racist as you can be. of course, i dont hang out with people who would be intimidated by words or ideas
i had a black friend in college (half black actually, with all the issues that entails), and I told him I didnt like the fact that he could use the word nigger and i couldnt. so he told me i could say it, as long as i used it properly. next time he came to my house i say "whats up my nigger?"(nigga actually because im cool like that). he damn near turned white as a ghost - i guess that was his caucasian side coming out

ahh, two wrongs make a right
i hope, for many, many reasons, that you dont have kids
setting aside the fact that your post is wildly inaccurate (slavery was carried on for thousands of years by non-whites);
why is "hillbilly" okay? its a slur against a group that has historically been oppressed

not only a slur, but an ethnic slur (scotch-irish to be specific)
but like i said, racists like grape ape arent prejudiced against white people, so they dont have the same guilt regarding hillbilly that causes them to crusade against other slurs, thus the lack of faux outrage
you said historically, remember? what happened hundreds of years ago is totally relevant, right? and historically, whites are NOT the oppressorsLast edited by ilikecandy; 07-17-2011 at 01:09 PM.

Have you ever heard it applied as a compliment?
Hillbilly is a term referring to certain people who dwell in rural, mountainous areas of the United States, primarily Appalachia but also the Ozarks. Owing to its strongly stereotypical connotations, the term is frequently considered derogatory, and so is usually offensive to those Americans of Appalachian heritage.

Never thought of it as being a slur. Same as redneck. I see a lot of proud to be a redneck stickers on trucks around here. Or, the more localized North Bendneck stickers.

Too bad any attempt to engage in discussion with you is like playing scrabble with a 4-year old. They can see the letters, maybe spell a few words, but definitions and concepts are out of their reach.
Similarly, you probably never understood when yourMommy told you it was wrong to pull the wings from flies
Come back when you've scrambled your way up from your lizard brain and become acquainted with your mammal brain. Your corpus colossum either never developed or has been severed.

Its because things are only offensive if someone lets them be.
Someone starts using fat insults to me?? It is going to be hard for me to not let it bother me.. WHY? Because I was.. still am somewhat...
You could call me a whole bunch of other things considered offensive and I could care less... it might make me not like you, but it isn't going to hurt me... Call me the derogatory white names. I don't care, I had no control over what color I was born, and I am not racist. There is nothing for me to feel bad about there.
People need to get over it, take back the words, and be proud of who they are and not let others hurt them...
and yeah, people shouldn't use words that they know are likely to hurt other people, but you can't control others, only yourself, and letting some racial slur bother you is giving someone else power that they don't deserve. The words people use say a whole lot more about them than about who they are talking about.
