That is a discontinued model, but it works just fine if you aren't all that interested in reading the data WHILE riding. I started out with that model about 5 years ago, and while it doesn't have the latest/greatest GPS chip, it will work. I still use mine for running. It's GPS isn't as good as the 705's in deep woods and steep terrain, but it mostly works.
It's got basic "What direction is my car?" GPS functionality that can work for BC touring as a back up to map and compass.
It is most likely a warranty repair, the early edge/forerunner garmins had problems with the battery connection getting loose. I had to send mine back, but once repaired it's been going strong for several years. If you get it be sure to update the firmware from Garmin' site. The early firmware had problems.Last edited by bbense; 07-20-2011 at 10:07 PM.

realistically, you want to burn as LITTLE watts as possible while going as fast as possible (in an acutal race). this is, in general, done in training by trying to hold a very high watt output for as long as possible (intervals). having a high watt output doesn't mean a thing unless you can hold it for a long time. think 1 single 500 pound bench press vs. 100 chin-ups.

Tried this out last night. There is a loop I like to do from my house in Evergreen, quickie speed thing. They always say listen to your body turn your off head, right? I thought last night I was crushing the shit out of it. Felt like a TDFer going up the hills, holding zone 4-5 almost the entire time. Download the ride and compare it with one from earlier this month:
7/20: 15.2 miles, 1:22.52, avg spd 11.0mph, 1767 vert
7/4: 14.9 miles, 1:23.55, avg spd 10.7mph, 1808 vert.
The differences are close, it is exactly the same ride. I know on July 4 I had been drinking that weekend, had ridden probably 50+miles in the days prior, but damn near identical times, speed and HR on the climbs-everything super close. This is way cooler than anything from Garmin. I do this ride pretty often, will be interesting to see how it holds through they year.

I don't know if they are doing it anymore, but if you upload rides using their iPhone app, you would get unlimited uploads for free (no need to sign up for the subscription plans).
also, hunt and peck around the interw3bz for codes that usually get you a few free months. they're out there.Waste your time, read my crap, at:

I'm trying to upload all of my old rides that I had saved on my laptop, but some of the files aren't importing correctly. Has anyone else tried this? 15 uploaded fine, but 2 of them are all messed up. A 100 mile ride with 5,500 feet of climbing is showing up as 365 mile ride with 75,000 feet of climbing.

Tried it out this weekend at the Kingdom Trails, and it's pretty cool. For some reason the mileage isn't reliable while I'm riding - usually says I've gone like, 2-3 miles total until I hit the finish button, and then the actual mileage is there. Wish I could see how far I've gone while I'm riding. Otherwise, once more people use it, it'll be even better. I rate top on a couple sections I uploaded their site, but I wasn't even the first in my group...

I only used that 22 for the Dville race. Yesterday (the ride above), I ran 34x20.

Hell I was shitting. I bought my ss used, the dude said you know I had it built up by my shop and just really don't like riding it. I get it and there is a 16 back there. I could barely turn them over.
Still is a shit load of achy knee climbing.

Wow this is bad news for productivity work. Screw you guys for pointing this my way. I did just upload my ride history of the past few years and found I've got KOM on a few of our tough (but short) climbs.

OK, I am hooked. Used it tonight for my 'backyard ride'. However, I feel I got unfairly penalized for riding with a dog.
on the climb I stopped for 5 minutes for him to swim in the river, get a nice drink and defecate. Even with a 5 minute break, I was barely on the first page.
On the first descent. the dog cost me nothing, however, the setting sun was directly in my eyes and I was blind for 40% of the ride. coyotes starting tracking us, so at one point I had to look back to make sure my dog was still with me.
I will say that i felt 'pushed' and hit some of the turns as well as i ever have. good feeling.
On the second trail of the descent I would be #1 by 28 seconds over a 10 minute descent, but 1/2 way down I stopped to let the dog swim and get a drink.
Oh and it was super sandy.
Next time, I ride without the dog.
some of the climb times were incredible. 33 minutes for a road climb i have never done in under 40. damn."A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles."

Have to say I really dislike Strava, I think it encourages some people to go to fast on trails and push the limits just in order to get a strava award. This can also be dangerous for other trail users who might happen to be around that blind corner.
A roadie in the bay area died trying to reclaim his record.
I also think it provides ammunition for haters of Mountain bikes to show what kind of speeds are carried on some trail segments, possibly leading to closure.

TahoeBC, most of my post was somewhat tongue in cheek, but, the fact that it is 'virtual racing' is what I like most about it. I can race, on my own, with my dogs tagging along. This is great for me, cause i am never gonna actually enter any real races.
There is a strong minority of mountain bikers that are tools, I saw one be a jackass and not yield to hikers on TRT on saturday. I don't think they need much extra encouragement to fuck things up for the rest of us."A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles."
