Shifting Responsibility, Wealth for the Common Good, April 2010

    http://wealthforcommongood.org/shifting-responsibility/

Shifting Responsibility, Wealth for the Common Good, April 2010.

    Executive Summary

Over the last half-century, America’s wealthiest taxpayers have seen their tax outlays, as a share of income, drop enormously, by as much as two-thirds for the highest-income grouping the IRS tracks. Meanwhile, the share of their household income that middle class Americans pay in federal taxes has increased slightly.

Our nation has borrowed money to pay for the tax cuts that have gone and continue to go to America’s wealthy, a reality that will have future generations of mostly middle income taxpayers footing the bill — with interest — for these tax cuts.

The “Economic Recovery Tax Program” this report proposes would collect $450 billion in new revenue through tax increases only on the very wealthy. This program would also discourage financial speculation, strengthen the overall economy, and introduce greater transparency, fairness, and simplicity to the tax code.

Please take the time to read BEFORE you dismiss.

I am interested in what you all think........ really.

    "Pay for TaxCuts?"

That statement assumes that the money belongs the the government and not the people who earn it.

Have you checked out revenue to the treasury? It always hovers at about the same as a percentage of GDP. Pretty hard to say tax cuts COST significant revenue.

WHAT YOU REALLY MEAN is that you don't want to raise taxes to pay for tax cuts, you want to raise taxes to pay for SPENDING INCREASES.

Until you admit that, there is no way to treat you as anything but mentally retarded or an evil greedy lier.

I didn't write the piece, didn't read it did you?

Because if you did you would have seen that this group is the people who WOULD be paying a high effective tax rate and the members are fine with that.

Epic Fail for all 3 of you.

Can you get any stupider? So this mythical 50% doesn't pay payroll taxes, contributions to Medicare and Social Security that come out of every paycheck. There are also excise taxes on some goods and services, most notably the 18.4 cents per gallon tax on gasoline, or any of the myriad other taxes that I pay?

No, you cannot get any stupider, take a class, get a clue or just STFU.

As usual, there are DBT's claims, and then there is reality, and never the twain shall meet...
"By this measure, federal taxes are at their lowest level in more than 60 years. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that federal taxes would consume just 14.8 percent of G.D.P. this year. The last year in which revenues were lower was 1950, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

The postwar annual average is about 18.5 percent of G.D.P. Revenues averaged 18.2 percent of G.D.P. during Ronald Reagan’s administration; the lowest percentage during that administration was 17.3 percent of G.D.P. in 1984.

In short, by the broadest measure of the tax rate, the current level is unusually low and has been for some time. Revenues were 14.9 percent of G.D.P. in both 2009 and 2010."
    http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/20...s-high-or-low/

Claiming that tax cuts do not cost revenue requires "logic" that the average first-grader would reject.
So if taxes rates are set at 0%, there will be no effect on revenues??
At some high marginal tax rate, rate reductions could stimulate additional economic activity and mitigate some of the revenue loss, but this clearly does not occur at all tax rates (or 0% tax rate would maximize revenue, which not even DBT could believe).
All the relevant data (including the huge current deficits) shows that the imaginary revenue increase that conservatives believe in has not occurred as a result of the tax cuts for the rich (nor has the tooth fairy shown up).

Conservatives claim tax cuts stimulate the economy to increase revenue or slow the decrease in revenue during a recession.

Liberals claim government defecit spending stimulates the economy or decraeses the decrease in a recession.

Let's assume neither side can prove their case. (Obama pretty well proved your side is wrong but that's another story)

Then it just comes down to who you side with.

Anyone who chooses to side with government over free people and believe that taking money from free people who earned it to feed a government based on an unprovable theory over choosing to error on the side of freedom is a facists. Plain and simple. No other way to look at it.

The Bush tax cuts were followed by low GDP growth, negative median wage growth, and little job growth. Even before the Great Recession, growth in the Bush business cycle was the weakest since World War II. And the cuts cost about $2.6 trillion between 2001 and 2010, according to the Economic Policy Institute—adding to a debt future generations of taxpayers will pay for, plus interest.

In my house and I'm sure in your house and every other responsible house in the world, when the income goes down we spend less.

NEVER do you clowns talk about the only common sence solution. Cut spending when income is down.

Keep whatever delusional theory you want about how to maximize revenue (as if that should be the goal of government????) and at some point stop spending as if you know your delusion will work to maximum effect.

Your talk of tax increases falls on deaf ears for most people because we all know that we don't have a taxing problem. WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM!

Betcha Obama's deficit spending saved/created more jobs than Bush's Tax cut.

    Betcha it didn't.

Funny thing is, you are thrilled with the idea of taking a TRILLION dollars from free people with no earthly way of knowing how to measure your outcome.

Wouldn't you rather take a TRILLION dollars from government with no earthly way of knowing how to measure your outcome?

    You people are SICK!

You are once again, wrong. One, from among many, previous posts: the Obama administration has proposed $2 trillion in spending cuts over ten years reducing federal spending to within a couple of percentage points of Republican proposals

Yea, and the GOP proposes we cut taxes for the rich and especially corporations, and still dont cut spending. How's THAT going to work?

Do you really think cutting spending is just a matter of people deciding we shoudl do it? Cutting spending means killing jobs, its a no win for anyone trying to win a popularity contest, I mean be a politician. Sure, people in general can say, yea, cut spending, and I'm sure theres a few things no one would object to, but imagine how many retarded emotionally driven ignorant people there are out there that would fall for an ad that says "so and so fired xxx# government workers during a time when unemployment is already high, does he have no heart..." You underestimate the inertia of the bureaucratic machine.

Tell me WHAT spending we should cut if your have it all figured out? Just saying "cut spending" is about as idealistic and naive as anti gun people saying more gun laws means less violence.

I realise that you're afraid of the idea of the word social so you've probably skipped The Social Contract, here is a link to the defining work in free ebook format, but the basic conception of legitimate government has authority only by consent of the governed.
I certainly would love to hear your definition of Facism. But until you can offer one I'll amuse myself with imagining what your conception actually entails.

Yeah, it did. Cutting taxes on the wealthy does not create jobs. It's a damn lie, always was, and you need to stop repeating it.
The tax cuts did not spur investment. Job growth in the George W. Bush years was one-seventh that of the Clinton years. Nixon and Ford did better than Bush on jobs. Wages fell during the last administration. Average incomes fell. The number of Americans in poverty, as officially measured, hit a 16-year high last year of 43.6 million, though a National Academy of Sciences study says that the real poverty figure is closer to 51 million. Food banks are swamped. Foreclosure signs are everywhere. Americans and their governments are drowning in debt. And at the nexus of tax and healthcare, Republican ideas perpetuate a cruel and immoral system that rations healthcare -- while consuming every sixth dollar in the economy and making businesses, especially small businesses, less efficient and less profitable.

I just figured it out. Conservatives are the super lazy. In my house when the income goes down I work more. You guys think that austerity is the solution but that's not what works for me. I go work a second job or find a better job.

From DBTs logic, when he gets a paycut he just stops eating. Simple!

And Candy YOU ARE A FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT. No one in the United States pays 90% payroll tax. The top bracket is 35% you fucking asshole.

And no...50% of the nation is not on welfare. It is actually less than 1.5%. Fuck off douche.

There you go trying to act like you understand WTF you are talking about again.

Cutting taxes is only one of a million cogs in the economic wheel. When 50 things, most of them done by government are acting as headwinds to an economy and a tax cut doesn't offset all of them, you blame the tax cut.

The truth is you are clueless about the damage your government does and you are clueless about the effect of tax cuts. The fact that you bother posting your self serving statistics is scarry because it shows that you actually think you get it. If you were smart enough to understand that you were clueless, you would have less of an impulse to "Do something". The more you do, the worse off we get.

Well then your income didn't go down did it......MORON.

So when the government is taking in less money, THEY work harder? IDIOT!

No, when the government needs more money I/we/productive individuals work harder.

Government doesn't sacrifice, they just crack the whip harder.

It is so entertaining to see everyone knocking DBT's racist fascist "facts" down for the ignorant bullshit that they are.

Let's examine some facts about DBT:
    1) he joined TGR 2 days after the 2008 elections
    2) he lives in Minnesota
    3) No one wants you here.

Did you get in a lot of days downhill skiing this year DBT? Why are you here? (other than getting paid to post right-wing BS on forums).
