MFD All-Time Review
MFD All-Time Review
ME: 6'2, 210lbs with gear, ex-racer, beer drinker
Set-up: MFD All-time touring plate with Look Pivot 14, 187 Dynastar Slicer
Boots: Lange RX 130 w Intuition Pro Tour Liners
Other touring set-ups: Fritichi Freerides, Naxo NX 21, Alpine Wreckers
Review:
Just got my Eastern Sierra set-up ready to go, and I am really stoked. Spent the last 10 days around Tahoe touring on the new MFD's and I am really impressed.
Pros: Stack height, alpine binding feel in downhill, torsinally STIFF, ease of climb mode
Cons: Weight
I will say this is my favorite set-up of the 3 other BC bindings. The number one postive is that i totally felt like I was in my resort binding, I could ski like I wanted to, with no feel of being "jacked up" or the horrible torsional twisting of the Naxos and Fritchis. The climb, skin, ski lever is the easiest to use as well: you can just flick it with your pole and it moves great. Number 2 positive was the torsional stiffness not only skiing but on side-hill skinning. I have always had prblems on steep side hills with my other BC setups (i.e the twisting, etc) and the MFD'S do not move at ALL. They give you so much confidence in just putting the hammer down up steep stuff.
I did the very scientific "hand weight test" of the MFD w Pivot 14 versus my old Naxo 21 and I would say it is half a pound heavier at the most. I am super pumped for the next 2 weeks in the Sierra's on these and will hopefully post some trip reports and pics as well as further reviews on the new set-up.
Off to the Eastside!

Cool. I'm sure anxious for more reviews on this. Quick question: Will you be using the MFD plate on all your skis (resort skis), basically just transferring this MFD/Binding around your quiver?
Or to ask another way, do you see any downside to using these full time on resort skis so they're ready for the occasional sidecountry/backcountry trip?Last edited by Magnoe; 04-13-2011 at 10:31 AM.

Mtskier,
Where do you work? I think I recall seeing a post from you that your store will be selling these next year?

how is the action of the pivot , can you compare the position of the pivot and how it feels in a stride on easyier skinning
what I mean to say is the dynafits pivots are more rearward and are suposed (havent tried them )to feel a little more ergonomic in a stride than FR's so compare the FR to the MFD or dynafits if you can?

Never skied on Dynafits so I can't compare. The pivot point felt the same as my fritchis, the Naxo's had the dual pivot point that was a little better gliding (from what i remember) on flat areas compared to the MFD's. The pivot point is right under the middle of the Look toe piece to give some perspective.

OK so you like the way they ski which is the same as your resort setup ,other than the weight could you say they toured at least as well as a freeride ,was there any probs with snow buildup what kind of snow were you touring in ?

did you notice any difference between the P14 vs P14w/MFD with regard to how the different mounts affect the way the ski flexes?
FKSs have such a nice short mounting footprint.I need to mount a box. Seal needs to be tight. Doesn't matter much what was jammed in there in the past as long as it is relatively clean now. - Commonlaw

I want. Not loving Dynafits on the big Bros but Salomons are a different story. P18s could even be better.

i love my P18s as well, but i'm still wondering if the elongated footprint of the MFD will negate the benefits of the very short mounting footprint of the FKS binding.
(granted one will still enjoy all of the other benefits of the FKS binding such as elasticity, etc.)I need to mount a box. Seal needs to be tight. Doesn't matter much what was jammed in there in the past as long as it is relatively clean now. - Commonlaw

The MFD's sound solid in all respects, but that's the one question I haven't seen answered. The plate is pretty large does it remain clear enough to consistently lock back into skiing mode?
Also what's the comparison between these and dukes, in terms of feel, they are obviously more convenient switching modes.you know there ain't no devil,

I have also been skiing Alltimes this spring and have probably 15-20 days on them by now. Mine are mounted with solly 912's (hopefully getting something more burly next year but these were lying around...) on Surface One Life's 189.
I have had pretty good luck with them clearing snow, and have toured in everything from corn to pow to wet cement. In the really wet stuff I have occasionally had a little bit of buildup but it was easily knocked out when I wanted to lock them down. There also aren't any small parts to get jammed up with snow (like the Dukes).
As far a flex goes, I've only ridden these skis with Alltimes so it's tough to say how much they affect it. However, the locking mechanism in the back allows for a little bit of horizontal (tip to tail) movement between the heel mount and the plate which seems like it allows the ski to flex fairly freely underneath the plate. May be a little hard to understand unless you are looking at a pair but it seems effective.
These are going to be my daily drivers next season, mostly resort but I'll have the flexibility to jump out and do side or backcountry without switching up my skis.

I am planning on getting a pair of DHs and am seriously considering mounting the MFD on them. Can't wait! I'm going to love being able to swap out the bindings and use em on different skis!
I have Voile's Universal Binding on my splitboard and I love that I can still use the same normal bindings from my regular board and switch em onto my splitty! Bout time they came up with this for skis! Congrats MFD!
How do you think the MFDs will work on the Double Helix? I know its kind of a vague question, but do you have any tips for mounting them yet?nolasvoboda-accidentalartist.blogspot.com

Thanks mtskier! It's looking like Atomic and Salomon weigh the least. I noticed you are selling the Deadbolts and Liberty's Tyrolia bindings. I can't seem to find any info on the weight or stand height of the 4FRNT Deadbolt 13 or the Liberty 515. I have the 10/11 green 174 Double Helix and really want to put the Purple Alltimes on em And obviously the Night of the Living Deadbolts would be a perfect match! But I can't find their weight or stand height. Also the Liberty bindings, are they the same as one of the Tyrolia Peak or one of their other models? What combo's are you planning on mounting?
