arthroscopic bankart shoulder repair next tuesday!

    Hey guys!

Im going in for a arthroscopic bankart to get my shoulder fixed here in Sweden next tuesday. I decided to do this because over the last 3 years my shoulder has been dislocated at least 50 times during all kind of sports and most lately sometimes even while sleeping, which sucks bad! Though I guess its what you call a subluxation as I always manage to get my shoulder back in place within a couple of minutes, most often just in a couple of seconds.

Now I'm kinda scared about the rehabing process. I've read alot of you guys stories and it seems like a pretty shitty time I have i front of me. I'm a student that is currently writing both me bachelors thesis and taking another full time course and after reading more about the rehabing I just feel that eveything is gonna get fucked up. I'm also starting a new job in the beginning of june..

I would really appreciate If u who has been through this process could give me some advice about how to make the rehabing as good as possible and also share your stories and thoughts. I also wonder if you think it's a good idea to train my shoulder as much as possible before going in to suregry?

    cheers,
    Carl

recover isn't that bad. I was completely useless for like a week and was back to work at 2 weeks.

You will probably get sent home with exercises. Just make sure you do them religiously

if you are as active as it sounds, training is probably not worth it, though your activity should help you get everythign back fairly quickly. Once i was allowed to stretch my joint more i gained my RoM back really fast

Get yourself a pulley that hooks over the door. Most Physical Therapy places sell them. I had Bankhart and Hill-Sachs repairs a year ago. My range of motion is great, but I still need to work on gaining more strength.

    Best of Luck!

update: 3 days since surgery. op went well, doc was happy about it. put 3 anchors in. the cuff, bicep and subscapularis was all well, though pretty big hill-sachs damage which he didn't do anything about.

pretty much without pain since day one. not taking any painkillers except one citodon (percocet?) before going to bed. sleep has been very good. beeing taken care of by my old folks in my summerhouse, chillin around, enjoying easter, so not suffering at all. really poitively surprised so far!

though my rehabing program seems quite different from yours, crackboy and snowmiser. i'm not allowed to move my shoulder at all in 10 days (have PT appointment then), only allowed to move my elbow and hand as much as I want. As I feel well I would really like to start working on my ROM as soon as possible and do some kinda of shoulder movements..how was your rehabing program when u where sent home? remembering reading that u crackboy where able to put a shirt on after 14 days which I feel will be impossible if I first start moving my shoulder after 10 days..

    cheers from sweden!

yea i was able to get a tshirt on with no help around then. i don't remember if i had started therapy by then or not, i don't think i did. my surgeon sent me home with some passive stretches to do from day 1 so that helped get some rom back. though being able to actively stretch made the most difference. i think i gained something ridiculous amount of degrees in the first week. it definitely gets easier. just stay on your exercises

alright, i wish my doc sent me home with some streches to do aswell. how were those passive stretches?
my post operative ordination is: movements in elbow and hand then pendulum exercises in the shoulder after 10-14 days. i've basically had no pain in the shoulder since day1 so i'm urging to start working on it. right now it just sort of feels like the shoulder is getting stiffer and stiffer. but whatever I don't dare ignoring doc recommendations and start doing exercises on my own, so I guess i'll just have to wait until friday when i'm seeing a therapist. but shit it's kinda frustrating!

@theViking: I had bankart, reverse bankart, SLAP, and capsular tightening done in 2009. I'm at 99% now, I'd say, but am more demanding on my shoulder being a surfer. It took a lot of time.

Definitely start pendulum swings - that will help with the stiffness immensely. But be careful in starting other exercises other than moving at the elbow - don't lift your arm over your waist yet, or behind your back, or across your body. Good luck, and don't rush - just stay true to your therapy when it starts.
