TR: Mt. Seymour (04.07.11)
This is probably one of the few times I will actually write more than a single paragraph for a trip report... Words are not usually my thing; instead, I hide behind my camera.
Most are probably reading this due to the thread title. For those of you who aren't from Vancouver, Mt. Seymour is one of our 'local' mountains. Tons of fun terrain, terribly slow lifts, and easily overshadowed by Whistler/Blackcomb. From my place, it's less than 30 minutes from door -> parking lot.
99% of the time, Whistler is where I ski. I'm lucky enough to be a student, have a pass, and have a ton of free time, so there's basically no reason to goto the local mountains. More vert, better lifts, more area, higher elevation... the list goes on and on. Although sometimes, by chance, I find myself exploring the local mountains, something I tend to do less and less of every year.
Like many of you, I am always looking for something bigger and better, commonly overlooking somewhere as simple as... well... Mt Seymour.
Thoughts for today? Go exploring. You don't always need to drive hours and hours to go ski the sickest terrain. Sometimes... it's right in front of you.
This city never stops amazing me.
Enjoy.

I think I had my scariest day ever on skis exploring Seymour in some sketchy avy conditions.
Great shots.
Play safe on the local Shore mountains, some hairball terrain out there that is very very easy to get sucked into and very hard to get out of.

The great thing about going local is being that much closer to your couch at the end of a fun day. Great photos, thanks.

I've been to W/B a bunch, but never to any of the local hills near YVR. I'll be in town for work in late Feb, but don't have enough time to get up to W/B. Sounds like Grouse is the most popular, Cypress the most recently "improved", and Seymour the most local vibe. Fair assessment? Any tips for a visitor?

go to Cypress, by far the biggest and best of the local hills

Beauty pics.
Anyone remember the old S-kids snowboard flicks? Most unreal natural hips around Seymour that you will ever see.

Your camera speaks sexy and carries a big stoke.

I prefer Mt Strachan as the whole Raven Ridge area on Mt Black has almost always been icy when I was up there, leaving not that much terrain on Mt Black to play around in. I do always enjoy Unrun (warning: won't be much fun on a snowboard) and then Shore Glades on Black before dropping down lower, so you can certainly have fun on Mt Black.
But it's so easy to get from one mountain to the other, so there's really no need to choose. Just play it by ear or go exploring on your own.
