Sports Medicine Doc in SLC (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?)

Any recommendations? Need someone that takes SelectHealth? Anyone heard of these docs?

    Benjamin B. Betteridge, MD
    Scott E. Johnson, DO
    Massimo Testa, MD
    Spencer E. Richards, MD

I'm having an issue with both knees. Think it might be some form of patellofemoral pain syndrome. Might be a muscle imbalance causing the pain after hard efforts on the road bike? If I'm just spinning and not pushing big gears up hills the pain doesn't seem to come on. Haven't ridden the new single speed this year, and just got the road bike and shoes. So maybe it's an issue with fit on the road bike? Skiing usually feels fine unless I have had a flare up from riding.

I'm getting both bikes(mtn/road) fit at Mill Creek Cycles on Friday, cleat check, change varus/valgus w/ shims, pedal stroke analysis, and all normal aspects of bike fit. Figured it's a good first step before seeing a doc. Also have been doing a lot of stretching along with some abduction and adduction exercises. Stretching and foam rolling ITB, Hamstrings, and Quads. Any other recommendations?

anterior knee pain from cycling is typically a fit issue. General rule of thumb pain in the front of the knee =seat too low, pain behind the knee = seat too high. Make very small 1-2mm adjustments until you find a good position. Porfessional fit is also an option. If those don't work get an eval from a good sports med doc and get an Rx. for either an athletic trainer or physical therapist for an eval of your knee to check for soft tissue issues (muscle/tendon/fascia/ligament). Start by stretching your hams daily. This is a major cause of ant. knee pain that some folks forget about.

4 surgeries later PF syndrome is haunting me big time. I'd trade JTrue's cycing knee pain for me shred pain. Hurts on skis, hurts on a snowboard. Fucking hurts when I spin and it hurts when I sleep prone on shitty too-firm hotel beds.

General rule of thumb pain in the front of the knee =seat too low, pain behind the knee = seat too high.
This really stood out to me... I rip the spinner bike at globogym on the regular and I've been really enjoying a higher seat in response to chronic anterior knee pain.
Makes pretty good sense as I think about ti... AFAIK quad strengthening is supposed to mitigate pain under the kneecap. Mini quats, mini single leg squats, or I guess shallow squats, need to be re-integrated into my protocol, i think. Analogous to "seat higher" I reckon ya
Thanks for the the thought Vinman!

I know them all well. Max Testa has the most cycling experience of the bunch. All good, but here's Max's professional positions CV:

Chief Medical Officer for the BMC professional cycling team.
Past team physician for 7-11, Motorola, Asics, Mapei professional cycling teams. Participated in 17 Tours de France and 12 Giro d'Italia.
U.S. Cycling team physician for several World Cycling championships.
Consulted for Italian national teams for canoeing, tennis, rowing teams.

Taylor Phinney is typically fit by us at BCSM.
He does pretty well when we position him.
Taylor Phinney was in his first Protour race this first weekend.
    He dropped out.
Max Testa attributed his knee pain to the changes they made in his bike fit days prior to the race.

Not really saying anything beyond bikefit can make a big difference.

    Otherwise, I echo Vinman.

Glad I came back to this thread, looks like Max Testa is my best bet. When I first posted I was a bit confused about anterior vs medial. It's actually medial pain on both knees. Still haven't been able to get out on the bike again, went to a wedding and danced which caused the pain to flare up a bit. Taking it easy, doing some more stretching and strengthening exercises. Testa is out of the office until April 6th, hopefully I can get in when he gets back.

Got in to see Testa this week. First he'll do a medical examination and then he wants me to bring the bike and make fit adjustments if necessary. Still haven't been able to ride since I got the bike fit done at Mill Creek Cycles, but interested to see what Testa thinks about the fit. Hoping this is just caused by training error, too hard too early without enough base...
