Weight Loss Contest
So, about a month ago my old man challenges me to a weight loss contest. He's 5'10" and weighs 189. I'm 6'1" and weigh 192. He says he can get down to 180 before I can get to 183. So, we make a friendly wager. For the last month he hasn't changed any part of his eating habits. I work at the same place he does and he is still eating his toast and jam every morning, popcorn in the afternoon, and when I talk to him at night I can hear his spoon hitting the sides of the ice cream dish over the phone. Me, I cut back on eating snacks during break and never took the bet seriously since he hasn't changed a thing. About three weeks ago he started walking twice a week. He now claims tonight that he is down to 185. I call BS, but if it is true, I better get off my lazy ass and start running. I'm curling 4 days a week, but that just consists of a lot of stress and yelling SWEEP! for 2 1/2 hours a night. Here's my question, if I cut out alcohol completely for the next 3 weeks do you guys think I'll loose a ton of weight? I currently drink almost every night except Sundays and Tuesdays.

first of all just losing weight is a misconception to getting in shape. losing all the beer will help, but its definately not gonna do it completely for you! start exercising (like try to get atleast 3 days a week and just curling isnt gonna do it) and instead of eating 3 big meals a day think 5-6 small meals throughout the day. just watch what you eat and dont think of dinner as your biggest meal but Dont go to bed hungry. try not to eat a lot of starchy carbs before you go to bed, so after like 6:00. and DONT forget to eat breakfast, that means eat before youve been awake for 3 hours! get good amounts of sleep. make sure youve got something to eat before you work out and eat one of your meals directly after working out. make workouts inconsistent and youll burn fat faster. i could go on for days.... but this should do you pretty good.
thing is, though, is that this will also help you build lean muscle mass as you burn fat and muscle is heavier than fat but short term this will burn fat pretty well and cardio workouts, as opposed to resistance training, will help you burn more fat and build less lean muscle so you will lose more weight.

Dude, if I do all that I would be in killer shape. That's not on my agenda.
I think I'll just stick to drinking, its more fun anyway.

12-16-2004, 01:28 PM #6Thanks hucksquaw. I kinda figured something along those lines with the vast amount of knowledge you threw out there. Right now wouldn't be a good time to give up beer anyway. I just finished my Undergrad today and I'm making a batch of beer tonight. I don't have a full time job lined up yet so I'll probably par-take in heavy drinking for the next 2 months.

upper body is important but more important is woking your core muscles. bicep, tricep, and shoulder work is always good no matter what your doing but focus on your back, abs and the muscles buried under those visible around your midsection. these core muscles are some of the most important for skiers and snowboarders because its a big part of balance and are really the powerhouse of your body. a weak core means all your other muscles work less efficiently during activity and core muscles really help with powerful moves and agility. But definately dont exclude your legs and upper body as well because those are also very important. remember: the most efficient way to build is to make workouts innefficient. switch it up and always keep your muscles guessing so dont do the same exercises all the time....
