Just arrived in Popova Shapka.
Dumping at the moment. 20cm in the past couple of hours. 75cm forecast.
3 people staying in the hotel here. Me and 2 Americans living & working in Kosovo here for the weekend.
26 euros B&B a night. I'm sure I could have got cheaper if I looked, but this has a pool and free wifi. And good food.
Happy days

It's been snowing for the last couple of days up here. We have 25cm of new snow on the deck. It looks like it's going to be a busy one tomorrow... I had to drive down to the airport this afternoon and saw a lot of cars coming up.
Ripz: I have your skis, call me when you want to pick them up.
edit: I lost track... it hasn't been a couple of days but three

Hey last minute decision of mine. I'm aching for powder and always have wanted to go to eberg. I'll be at eberg tomorrow. Talking the ealiy train and the voie 7 back for free (35 chf total from lausanne :-). Probably no one who is going will see this, but if you do send me a ring, 078.882.49.95
I'll be in a blue helmet, black jacket, and dark green pant with a black dakine backpack.

Great first day in Popova Shapka, Macedonia.
Not much visibility. Snowed lightly throughout the day with fog rolling in every so often.
The base was old snow and submerged foliage with the odd rock thrown in for good measure. And yes I was thrown a good few times. Where the new snow had settled on a good base the skiing was great. 20-40cm of light powder depending on aspect and wind transport. Some good terrain with a very accommodating pitch.
Met up with and skied with Vihren and the Bulgarian crew and a couple of Macedonian lads. Great company and a great day.

Yo, mangs!
Heading to munchen with Onwards on tuesday and we have a half day of skiing on tue (due arrival in morning) & wed (having to go to munchen to pic up more people afternoon).
.
Salzburger area is apparently getting 20-30 between tue & wed. Is there any reasonable resorts in the area? I have absolutely no clue of the resorts in that area as I have not been around that part..
So,what to check out and wich one of the resorts have reasonable bases?
Other option would be Zugspitze,as they have gotten a decent amount of snow in the recent days.
Oh,and we are roadtripping austria & swiss until the 2nd, so it would be nice to see some peeps!
ps.Klar, keksie, did you see Jari last week,he was around there?
The floggings will continue until morale improves.

Meathelmet: we did not see Jari, last i heard he was in the engadin and thinking of going to engelberg. Salzburg has some decent areas, Obertauern, Sporgastein maybe Zauchensee and Skiwelt Amadé.. Kitzsteinhorn is ok but probably gets tracked fast.
Ich bitte dich nur, weck mich nicht.

Meats, am @Kitzsteinhorn today. Has a halfway ok base and with another 30cm mid-week would prob be good.

I can report that engelberg is as sweet/better than the reports. Its a bit of a sh**show with the crowds - seems like half of switzerland relocated here for the weekend - but the snow is great- feels more than the 30cm reported, probably 60+ cm (unscientific) and plenty of bigger drifts. Main routes pretty tracked out but still plenty to search for. Lower bits are still picking up snow overnight.
Apologies for giving away the (non) secret to anyone who is here.
Ripzalot- sorry you missed out.

at least there is some fresh snow in no-snow-land.

pics dont tell the whole story. here's one additional which may help.

@geo: (especially on weekends) eberg is tracked out totally until 2 latest in these days. even most of all those gnar lines.

Cheap lodging - St Anton, Engelberg, Andermatt. Any suggestions? I am living in Chamonix and have some Jackson Hole buddies visiting for a road trip starting Feb 5. Cheers!

Hey, no problem. I had a great time anyways. Got back to lausanne at 10:30pm last night because I waited till after 7pm to ride the trains for free with my voie 7 card. The snow in engelberg was awesome. I'd say it was up to 75 cm deep where there was no wind effect and where it was unskied since the storm started. Super fluffy in those spots as well. It was as has been said pretty crazy with crowds early morning, especially since the earliest I could get there by train was 9am, so already the lifts had a lot of crowds.
By 1pm though the trams were all walk on with zero wait and I had got the feel for the resort layout so I was just doing laps all afternoon and a full top to bottom 2000m run of powder to finish the day off. :-)
Definitely worth the only 35 CHF I paid for the train and 60 CHF lift ticket.

meathelmet not quite sure what the bases are as I haven´t been there since the warm period but second the resorts klar mentioned.
if its snowing an visibility is bad go to zauchensee and obertauern can be pretty windblown so check that. maybe subtle will chime in on this but Krippenstein looks like a pretty good option too

woah. the engelberg crowds have reached the next level!
i didN't think this was possible
and the snow: well there were honest 50cm+ blower (measuring station not skiers 50
) in places, but 75 would have been a whole different thing
. we can call it "skiers 75"
nontheless it was the best snow i have skied there in the last 5 years. (ok but due to the crowds i have become more of a rare guest
)
but it was very different on very short distances. the back side had 20cm and a horrendous hike down to the bus. But still it was completyly tracked after day one. funny thing on the side: i keep running into the same locals at the bus station for 5 years now.
we did a tour today somewhere else, but 3 hours to ski 5min? come on. i should have skied the leftovers in e-berg.It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

That might mean you have to skin a little faster.

Backcountry is just different, it's not just about the down.
But hey, I do not need to convert more people, there are already plenty out there.
True... the snow in central Switzerland this weekend was some of the best I have ridden in Switzerland at all. (you just had to get it in the wind protected areas)
Absolut blower, like some of the best blower I have ridden on deep, cold Colorado days.

Chamonix snow conditions are pretty bad but they could be worse. I was expecting to be able to ski to Chamonix town but that is impossible. Higher up things are ok. Got some areas of thigh deep powder a week or so ago.
Do the snow dance.

I suspect the Rotair is a 4 bucket wait AKA 1hour+?
