^^^ I guess there not much need to climb higher because there's enough snow to avalanche on the glacier toule (and elsewhere).
Guide gets to test the ABS; client not so lucky.

My flight arrives in Geneva tomorrow at 7:30am. I need to be back to the airport to pick up my friend at 9pm. I have a car. Any suggestions as to where to ski for the day? Best conditions in the area? Can i hire a guide at the base? Any input greatly appreciated.

Appears it wasn't his client but his girlfriend & his mate who were with him. Unfortunately she didn't make it. If reports i've heard are correct then this one wasn't a skier triggered avalanche but self released from well above them. If this is correct it would appear that they were just tragically unlucky in terms of being in the wrong place at the wrong time as indicated conditions were not so bad that slopes should be self releasing. Also the woman in question was a german running a small hotel in vallorcine. 7 years previously her husband was killed in remarkably similar circumstances in a similar location. There's quite a lot of chat about this on local forums but for more info in english there are a number of people posting about it here http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=397548&v=1

a big group led by a swiss guide triggered a large avie in crevacol (italian side of Gr S Bernard). Everything went well, but it's clear that risks are pretty high.

Anyone want to take the day off monday and go to Saas Fee for some powder?
I have my trusty Subaru Forester with All Wheel Drive and Snowtires.

Though yesterday's dump was not as significant as expected (at least in the Briancon area) it got us some welcomed lines in fresh powder (or sort of) today.
Yesterdays mini-dump ...

...materialized into some nice lines today

Probably the best thing (beside the nice company) was that finding untracked slopes was easy even as late as 4 p.m.

save your power for other spots.... the swedish freeride mag tells where to go, and lots of scandis follow their suggestions... so the next two years, montafon will be dead (freeride-wise).
(and an interesting note: in montafon this season never arrived "90cm"! liarrrrr
)

"Arlberg is the shit! Montafon is not steep enough. "
A phrase like that is almost asking people to go there and check it out, it screams "this place is awesome, but we want it for ourselves...."
We'll se where we end up...
Any tips on places to stay? Any apres ski in montafon?

i stayed there. not cheap, but the food is absolutely amazing and the owners are really friendly. all stuff is fresh prepared and all products are from the regions (maybe not the bananas, but you never know what these austrians hide in their mountains
).
montafon is really not that steep.

You should have hit it today! Snow was still good, bluebird and we did some of the more gnarly lines, even one of the couloirs (25 min hike) above the traverse we did a few times yesterday.
Some Salomon pros (Kai, Cody???) we're also there. It was cool to see the rockstars!

Glad to read that you had again a fine day. We fled the cold, northerly wind and in doing so we "discovered" a nice little village-resort totally of the beaten path. After a few laps in the vicinity of the lifts we did a short skinning to find some still fresh powder at northerly slopes. The truly gorgeous landscape was a neat add-on.

Not current, but went to montafon earlier this winter. Def. a low snow year this year, but lot's of good snow in the trees.

If you're going, go to the gargellen area, the other places are quite touristy and flat...
