Was anyone at Baldy today? What's the status of snow coverage on telegraph? Is there enough to make a descent?

So I ended up descending Telegraph yesterday, which was more or less one of the dumbest decisions I've made in years. I thought the new snow would've made the couloirs fun, but the wind blew anything new off the peak leaving nothing but ice underneath a trace of light snow making it deceiving when looking at it. I was very very fortunate to have an axe in hand when my heel side edge gave way to the ice and I started sliding really fast down the couloir. Ended up having to leaf my way down toe-side using the axe to control the descent in some spots. Fucking dumb.

But the turns in the apron/bowl were pretty nice. I saw a couple skiers booting up the Thunder/Telegraph saddle from coldwater canyon. (You guys on here? I didn't want to sound like a gaper shouting "hey you guys on tgr??" from across the bowl)

    Some pics:

Well, the pictures make conditions look nice.

Unfortunately, this is a common socal BC occurrence. We had the same problem in the Baldy bowl a couple of seasons ago.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Nice photos. Yeah, the hardest part about Telegraph is getting it with good/safe conditions. Normally by the time it corns up, rock fall litters the snow. Wind hits it hard after storms. Glad you made it out safe.

WOW. Those conditions look stellar compared to what I got. The San Bernardino range must've picked up quite a bit more snow. That storm system was a pretty hit-or-miss. Way to get the goods!

Hell yeah, Socal backcountry. I love it. The 20 years I lived down I never skied any backcountry except for some of the chutes off the east side of Snow Valley. Now living in MT for 10 years, I wished I had.

406 - I take it you used to live up this way as well?

406 hasn't replied to any similar question I've asked, but I think he's from Missoula. He's a stoke machine tho...

My tr from Telegraph on Saturday April 16th.
Telegraph has great terrain, but I have found it hard to get good/safe conditions. Normally by the time thing corn up, the chutes are littered with rock. With the late season storm followed by really warm weekend, I thought it might be good...and it was.

chunder attempts to get speed to cross the saddle and get a bit up the other side:

View gets good as you start getting higher than Thunder:

The 2 summit chutes looked really dirty, so my first run was the next one down or third one up if counting from the saddle:

The apron below the chute was corn-tastic:

    chunder:

Putting in the boot pack back to the saddle was a bit of work, so I decided a second run on chute 1 was needed to take advantage of the post holing effort.

    chunder arriving at the saddle:

Beers and nachos on the Baldy deck. And more beer in the parking lot with Big Tim and Twins and others. Excellent day.

Nice. That chute looks a hell of a lot more fun than when I went down it a couple weeks ago. Everything is melting really fast up there :\ I was hoping to revisit Tele in a week or two, but there might not even be any cover by then.

I went back to Baden-Powell yesterday for one more spring run. There was still great coverage in the trees, much deeper than I thought it would be. That lead me to keep hiking higher for those extra turns. I ended up dropping into the north bowl at the Wally tree. The snow was fantastic; the perfect cream corn that feels just like pow. I got about 2600' of vert before the snow gave way to the creek. There were some really sketchy snow bridges I had to cross, but even worse, were the 3 sections of technical rock-downclimbing next to waterfalls. It was quite the experience, but the turns at the top were worth the moments of panic hanging from my axe on a wall of loose rocks.

The video is a bit long, it's almost the entire descent on snow, and I threw in a few minutes of sketchy rock-downclimbing at the end.
