Not me. I hope everyone is OK.

    SNOWPACK

As the storm begins to clear, people can see into the mountains. With a few locations excepted we're getting reports of a very extensive natural cycle that ran during and after the storm. Natural avalanches were seen on almost aspects, but were most prevalent on SE-E-N aspects where wind drifted the most snow. Reported widths range from a few tens of feet to a crown that may extend 2 miles along Buffalo Mountain in Summit County, and reported lengths from quite short to several thousand vertical feet. Most avalanches failed on the old snow surface, and many of the avalanches stepped down into deeper snowpack layers or to the ground.

We received the first report of a backcountry skier caught and partially buried. No details yet, but the avalanche occurred on an NE aspect near treeline on Quandary Peak, a fourteener in the southern end of Summit County.

Snow from this last storm fell onto a snowpack that was quite weak. At most locations, the old snow surface was weak and sugary (facets and/or surface hoar). The storm snow did not bond well, and cold temperatures will not promote strengthening and stabilization any time soon. It will not take much additional load to cause an avalanche, and once started, an avalanche may propagate widely.

For all mountain areas, the overall avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE at all elevations and on all aspects. Above treeline on slopes where the snow drifted, especially SE-E-NE-N-NW aspects, the danger is HIGH. Unstable slabs exist on most terrain and elevations. Backcountry travelers can probably trigger an avalanches on, or from below, slopes 30 degrees or steeper. Many slopes avalanches naturally during or after the storm. Slopes that did not, or accumulated additional snow after avalanching, may avalanche naturally. The Avalanche Warning expired today at 11 am, but the danger has only decreased a bit.

Backcountry travelers in all mountain areas should avoid travel on or below slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

CAIC mentioned that in their report today. Hopefully the maggot in question is okay. Also, not knowing the details, I hope that the person wasn't truly alone...the avalanche danger is pretty high right now. CAIC reported a supposed 2-mile long fracture line on Buffalo?

    Maggot Avalanche

Thankfully, nobody was hurt! *whew* twice in 24hrs.

The report from observers was a partially buried skier on Quandry. Search and Rescue deployed as did the helicopter.

The skier apparently triggered large slide on Quandry above treeline ENE facing. He signalled to the helicopter that he was safe. That must have been super scary.

He said he wasn't buried (I guess he skied out of it?) but his dog was completely buried in the slide. He was fine and found his dog quickly and the dog is OK. It turned out the skier is a maggot (don't ask, read the paper tomorrow).

Please Be Safe! Let's have a season with no maggot deaths!

DO NOT SKI ALONE! (If the skier had been buried instead of the dog, the skier could have been buried for more than an hour before SAR got there!)

DIG PITS AND MEASURE THE SLOPE! If you think the slope is too shallow to slide, measure and make sure!

These are especially important on high danger days with avi warnings. </safety bob>

    More info:
    http://geosurvey.state.co.us/avalanc...rea=1&nav=last

Please have a SAR card, hunters license, fishing license, etc! That way local SAR (or in other areas, you personally) doesn't eat the the cost of launching the helicopter.

    (moved separate post here)

While it is probably OK to say their alias, I don't know. There are all sorts of fucked up laws about shit like that.

These are some nasty and stupid laws. If the person had been a patient I coudln't even say it was a 'He'. (thank you, US government)

Of course without these dumbass laws I could go post the pictures of dead avalanche victims I have from other missions.

There are a lot of people who ski with dogs.

Last time I rode an avie it was all over this board; well, powdermag. I had no objection. If I do stoopid shit and it gets on here, well, then I'm a stoopid shit and I accept it.

Don't get all sensitive. I was laughing at tuffy's sarcastic wit, not you and not DUPH.

    Jeez.

edit: Also, Summit - If you hadn't started blathering about it, nobody would know. You open your big mouth, give hints, then try to blame me for narrowing it down? Bitch, pleeeeez.

    Double Jeez.

    Good for you.

Don't confuse sensitivity for a little respect I was trying to give to another. Is that a hard concept for you?

I only fault you for getting indignant (not indigent) when I wouldn't answer your demands for information that I don't want to give out.

I don't know what you mean by "hints" but you go ahead and keep "narrowing it down" there sherlock. When you solve the mystery, maybe Shaggy will give you a scooby snack.

    Tripple jeeze.

There aren't that many CO maggots who regularly ski in the backcountry with their dog. You made it pretty easy to figure out.

    Luckily he was ok.

I have no clue how many people specifically ski with their dog. I know a lot of people who do.

The story is just as effective without a specific name.

    Let's review.
    I called you a puss.
You thought I was being indignant.
You asked if I would want my name associated with an avie.
I said it has been before and I didn't request anonymity.
    You said 'good for you.'

You say you want to respect this person's sensitivity.
I say 'then don't start posts heading to an inevitable conclusion.'
If you think I was being indignant, that's your inference.
I was saying 'cough up the rest of the story and quit holdin out.'
I can't stand cliffhangers with that don't have a third act.
But I can be quite sensitive.
