Does it seem like Bowie's live version is a slight nod to the Nirvana version? It seems a little different than I recall the album version sounding.

    Nina really nailed the spirit:

    Then there's Bauhaus:

...but there was only one Ziggy:

Ziggy was too beautiful for Earth. When the kids had killed The Man I had to break up the band.

Never heard Mose Allison's original, but it just can't be any better than this.

I always loved Gary Moore's version of Shapes Of Things

Personally, I'm a fan of when somebody takes a song that they are covering and makes it their own. So, it's not necessarily better, just different with their own unique stamp on it.

Peter Gabriel, a man who until recently wasn't known for doing many covers (he released a covers album last year) used to do a mean cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" back in his early days that takes the soulful nature of the original and tweaks it just enough.

"Man, we killin' elephants in the back yard..."

Mike Ness' Don't Think Twice its Alright. Just about anything is better than Dylan orginals. Hence why Jimi Hendrix was so popular. Metallica's Tuesday's Gone is better than Skynyrd's

A decent cover of a shitty song:

FKNA cover of a good song:

    HEY HEY HEY HEY
It doesn't matter if you're a king or a little street sweeper...
...sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper

Maybe better than the Houses Of The Holy original but not better than The Song Remains The Same version.

And don't know how I could forget a couple Judas Priest versions of Fleetwood Mac & Joan Baez tunes.

i'm a huge JP fan and never knew those were covers!

van halen's cover of the kinks' 'you really got me' has got to be one of the best covers that are better than the original.
