October snow. The season is doomed. Again.
Don't you remember last year?
I can't believe you people are happy about this.

Don't make me do this.
09/10
October: 42
Season 585
2008/2009
October: Not listed
Season 696
2007/2008
October 53.0"
Cumulative season total
2008-04-30: 701.5" / 51.77" water equiv.
2006/2007 (Historic bad year across the country)
October: 24"
Total: 401.0
2005/2006
October total: 10 inches
Season Total: 637.5
2004/2005
October 2004 total: 122.0"
Season total: 697.5"
There is almost no correlation between the October snowfall amount within the last 5 years and the total seasonal average. As I have said I feel strongly that this year is very similar to the la nina of 2007-2008.
When I checked the SST anamoly maps this morning they were almost identical to the similar maps in october 2007. So...yea...i'd prob be out there skiing and having a ood time and not crying about what this means. 'Cause it don't mean shit long term.

Made it up to Alta yesterday for some EARLY turns. Well worth the effort.

I am impressed, you worked hard to get to that line.

I agree there's no correlation. But, I also have to note that last year's 585 is misleading. We had a good spring, which made the numbers look good, but the winter was really shitty, with long dry stretches, rotten snow, and the occassional blockbuster storm that provided too much snow for the unstable base.
I think we'll do fine this winter.
I'm jealous of all those who got out on this storm, with the exception of the guy who injured his patella, who has reminded me why it's a good idea to sit out the first storm or three.

Always some grassy slopes go to schralp I suppose - as I did - but I see where you're comin' from. I think I saw Gnar, Provo and Co walking out yesterday, but didn't understand what kind of devastation went down until I saw those pics. Nice work early season!
That north side run looked tits, I normally don't see that many tracks back there on a February pow day...

Sure does feel good to get back out in the powdah!
Tony Pavlantos on some mini golf lines today. Lots of trailbreaking for lots of shredding. Reached some pretty high speeds in ski mode too... always very scary
No instabilities noted, but I did find plenty of ground facets around vegetation... lets hope it keeps hammering down!
Here's some shots from our first turns on 10.26
The struggle.

And ofcourse, sunrise in the clouds. It would get so deep at times, we had to resort to mixed rock and ice climbing on the couly walls to get around the bottomless pits.
Other times, we... uhhh... got stuck. We couldnt help but laugh the whole way up. We thought about taking the shoulder but didn't want to drop in on a big ol pile o rocks. Little did we know...
First line of the season! Coulda sworn in was mid winter!

Despite the ok spring, most old timer locals consider last year one of the worst in memory. You just haven't been here long enough. The only positive thing that I can say about last year is that we were really, really lucky more people didn't die.
DING DING DING DING DING!!!
We have a winner!!!
Congrats to Telethor for seeing the big picture.
There is more to a season than a series of storm totals.
October snow, while relatively common is never a good thing.
Props to all you who got after it right away. Hope you had fun. It may be the last reasonably safe skiing to be had for quite a while. Lets hope not.

zach man, you need verts. they help, a lot. Sick shots you guys put together.
as far as october storms, its pointless to speculate about future snowpack. Nobody can guarantee the weather right? Just remember what's there and what happens to it as time goes on. high pressure next week, not a good start.

Yea Ian, I used some today for the first time and they were definitely a game changer! I would've honestly been stoked to not see snow till december and keep on climbin, but if it snows, i'm there. We'll see what happens right?

Go with the flow and quit worrying about it. Most every year in the Wasatch gets REALLY good at some point.
