Thread: This morning

I get to work from home today so this morning instead of sitting in traffic I decided to sit in the cold and wait for the sunrise.

Moral of the story: I should get up for sunrise more often! Luckily my new job allows me to work from home once in a while and there's a ton of amazing scenery just outside the door.

I'd appreciate some C&C - trying to get better at this... So far getting out there for that morning light seems to make the biggest difference, but I know I can improve on other less obvious elements.

Love the second shot.... and is the last one of the lakes that are on the side of 95th St in northern Lafayette? Looks familiar.

I'm just down the road in Erie, I might have to wander down there in the next few days and take some shots. You had a perfect morning today, that's for sure.

This is all from Sawhill Ponds, just north of 75th and Valmont. Although looking at a map seems that there'd be lakes with a similar view looking west off 95th...

Yep, I know the area. You should check out the North Teller Lakes area too (the one I referred to above)- some similar scenery with great views.

I just might check em out soon. Last weekend we did a bike ride from Longmont (and the Lefthand Brewery) back to Boulder across some awesome rolling countryside and I really want to back out there with photo gear at the right time of day.

the last isn't bad, but to me, it leans towards overexposed. It isn't, nothing is blown, but it's bright...

did you use a gnd?

I can't help thinking that might help, but the bright part is the reflection of the sky in the water.?.?.

any filters? CP? ND?

I'd be interested in EXIF, it is balanced, the reflection is relatively sharp, but the water's brightness makes me think pretty slow (>1/3) of a second...

sweet photos, really like 2 & 3. 4th is great too, doesnt look over-exposed to me just normal fall colors.

I used a CP and a GND - 3-stop reverse or 2-stop hard (embarrassingly I can't remember -- might have been the time of day). The CPL didn't do much to the sky because I was essentially shooting away from the sun but it makes the foliage more vibrant. Would it have affected the reflection though, given the angles? The reflection is brighter than the sky, though -- I didn't notice it as much before. I have a test shot taken a minute earlier without the GND and it's pretty flat - sky is pretty washed out compared to the mountains and there is much less contrast in the hills/foliage. Maybe in an ideal world I should have used a weaker GND and/or stacked another one upside-down to rein in the reflection. In absence of a full GND quiver, a slight adjustment brings me to this -- what do you think? Actually makes it look much darker IMO.

The re-work looks better, to me...

like I mentioned the first time around, nothing was blown, nothing seemed especially over/under-focused...

it just seemed bright/hot on the water half of the screen...

it seems a little more balanced now
