I used to have the "they'll just go somewhere else" attitude as well, but interviews with survivors and people who were prevented from jumping don't back that up.
Cycling across the GGB 3-5x a week for nearly a decade and often going by the Coast Guard station beneath the Bridge on Horseshoe Bay has changed my mind after seeing several coroner trucks and body bags on the docks. Pretty sobering.
Most of the objection has been around aesthetics and spoiling views. It's funny, most people out here have no objection to spending >$30M on a movable center median barrier on the Bridge when there has only been 1 fatality since 2001. Yet they get their panties all in a bunch spending $76M on trying to thwart what has become a beacon for the mentally unstable with >1,600 confirmed suicides... It's nuts.
Here's a link to the New Yorker article that inspired the documentary which that vid was based on. Great read.

Pretty much the SF way- spend $$$ to sweep the problem to the next location. Its not good to have tourists from all over the world come to your iconic bridge and see jumpers. Of course, the assumption is that the barrier will deter the jumper. I don't know. What is the motivated persons plan b? Don't do it, jump in front of traffic, o/d, downtown skyscraper jump, gun?
SF spends close to $1B a year on outreach, health services, non-profit funding for XYZ services, etc., so I know there are services available, but that does not mean the average depressed/mentally disturbed person does. Nor does it mean they have the immediate capacity to want or accept help.
This could turn quickly into political & social commentary on SF. I'll refrain (disclaimer; I've lived in this pool for 23 years).

so let's see, he apparently put a single bullet into the transgressor's head from close range that dropped him and maybe another one in the torso for good measure when he was already down. doesn't that fly in the face of the cops repeatedly having to shoot an unarmed kid or a mentally ill person 15-20 times to eliminate the threat?
