Since there's no Southern Cascade thread, I'm making Shasta an honorary member of the Eastern Sierra. I did an egregiously poor job of taking photos this weekend, but it was fun. The snow was a little chalky but mostly chicken-heady from the summit to 13,000, chalky at the top of Headwall (13,000-12,000'), variable from about 12,000'-11,000, and nicely corned up from from 11,000'-7,500'.

Nice AK. I flew by Shasta a week ago and it looked PHAT!

After climbing and skiing in the Baldwin Cirque on Tuesday, it's hard to think about what was transpiring on Mt. Split that day..indicative of the amazing highs and the lowest of lows that accompany life in the mountains. RIP Kip Garre.

Slightly better view of the picture above. Saw some cool tracks heading south on 395. This is the north end of Wheeler Crest. For the record, these tracks aren't mine.

Hey thanks.. Baldwin was a totally manageable day trip..depending on what your objective is. It was close to an hour boot in from the end of McGee Creek Road before crossing the creek, then on skis the rest of the way. The ridge line with those chutes is at 12,000'. It's about a 6.5 mile round trip with 5,000' elevation gain from the trailhead. I want to say we did it somewhere under 7 hours car to car. Giv'er!

Pondering options for this weekend -- ideally two classics in the Eastern Sierra. Any thoughts on Mt. Wood?

We got a good look at Mt. Wood's north side when hiking into Parker Lake and Mt. Lewis.. Presumably you'd be going for the east face though eh? Caught a glimpse of it on the drive in..

Anyone have any info on 168 to Sabrina? Where is it gated (Aspendell?). Totally burnt-out I assume?

UCL- The gate was closed at Aspendell as of last Sunday, 4/24, if that's any help.

Rubbish. Bad weather, so we bailed and skied resort and did the exotic Telescope Peak. I'm done with the Southern Eastside. I'd rather ski than scramble around on death slogs.
