Wish I had that kinda snow when I was out there earlier in January. Lucky bastard! They were due.

Big Daddy, glad your pole is getting it. Hahaha! Wish mine wuz - not funny!

The howling winds overnight sure treated some areas nicely, from the look of it you guys traveled quite a bit further from the trail than I, didn't see any areas that were that open. Yesterday was a beautiful day to be in the mountains for sure.

Went to Plattekill for the first time yesterday. Things were crusty in a lot of places but I had a good time. I only ventured into the inter-run trees toward the end of the day when things softened a bit and my less enthusiastic friends called it quits, but I can see how you could spend all day just playing in those areas. They had surprisingly good snow. I think a lot of the blown powder ended up in the little dips.

One question: Is the almost full on grooming of the steeps normal or did they just do it after the last rain/freeze/thaw cycle? I was heartened to see a smaller mountain with a number good, steep top to bottom pitches, but they all ended up feeling kind of the same to me as they were all reasonably similar in slope and smooth groomed (outside of maybe a three bump width on one). I think it would have been great to have one groomed, two natural and one half and half. I would have found that more entertaining. Talking to some regulars on the lift they said they didn't use to groom so much, but I didn't get whether they meant before this year or before this last cycle.

I think it's just because of conditions right now, usually it's sort of chopped up powder on the trails you were probably skiing.
.....I hope you know that this will go down on your permanent record

Good to know. I'll have to try to make it out again this year when they get some more snow.

I was a bit worried as one of the regulars referenced them having gotten a second grooming machine and I thought they might just be deciding to flex their muscle. But the crust/base explanation makes sense.

Addit: They may still be available online, I can't recall where I printed them from. Maybe a "search" will give you the site.

I buy my tickets at WAX in Mansonville. $45 and you don't have to go to the ticket window, don't need a J-Card, etc. Just park at stateside and get on the lift.

Other shops in VT must have similar presale tickets. They're good for any day

but $20 off $69 is $49, so the presale tickets are still better.. and you don't have to deal with the ticket window, just the friendly lads at WAX - which opens quite early

Sucks yesterday was your first visit. Normally they leave steeps with exception of Northface bumped. As mentioned they've been using base-building as their reasoning this season. Give it another shot, promise it will not be so crowded next time.

met up with ralph and rob today for a tour up high nh. nice morning, sunny, not too much wind. skied 1 nice run in the sandbox followed by 2 full gully laps in #1 and 2. skiing up high is definitely more firm on a whole than anything i've encountered since early december due to recent thaw crust and not much density in the new sno to handle the blo. everything skied smooth and edgeable tho and lower halves of runs were soft and deeper buff.

headed down with rob and the trail down skied very nice with a skim of new snow. the day was young so i then skinned all the way back up to gully #1 and caught up to a friend and skied the gully and out with him. over 7k gained today, not bad for 1st day of vaca. decent skiing fer sure.

great to get out with rob and ralph today. back up in the a.m. with awf170, lynchdogger, and peteslovo for more new england hardpack schralpage. hehe. fucking cold up high this afternoon. bone chilling in fact.

absolutely ZERO snow instability up high. thaw crusts will do that.

Nope, but I know which guy you were talking about. I was in a orangish Cloudveil coat. I didn't get off on my own to do much exploring until the end of the day though, so unless you were hammering the blues, we might not have run into each other.

What were you wearing/skiing? I saw a little bit of Orange and Norrona that seemed to be atypical for the place...

It has been a few years since I've seen the double side groomed. Its almost always bumps top to bottom with the exception of block buster and Upper Face. They did improve their snowmaking and get another groomer this year. The grooming has improved greatly over the last few seasons. I remember when they left, ice boulders in the middle of the trails. Def try it again, that place rips.

I think that was me. I had a grey/ orange jacket skiing on blue wailers. Next time ask for change. If there is soft snow there are some good tree shots in there. They seem to be overdoing the grooming, Mabye they are excited about their new equipment. Once they get some new snow cycles coming I bet the back off on it.

bluebird, cold, crisp morning here in the valley. should be a good day to look around and practice our edging skills up high. some soft snow will be found too lower in the lee. kinda wish the temp would rise to 50. it'd be instacorn up high. a dream.

good day for vert gains. have a good day fellow east-ear-ners.

Thanks for the advice - the friends we're staying with have Wildcat/Attitash passes & I had no-blackout deals to keep it cheap at Wildcat so we spent George's b-day in sight of George. My expectations were low and easily exceeded - surprisingly uncrowded (basically ski-on the HSQ all day) and we had a solid day ripping groomers, which mostly didn't get nearly as scraped/blown off as I'd feared. Even found modest freshies when we hit Catacomb Glades later in the day.
