HELP!! Digital Video Camera Advice
Alright, so please forgive me for a frantic post.
I'm getting married next weekend and apparently the plan is not to pay for a person to tape it, but instead to buy a digital video camera.
Long story short, it didn't happen. I have been frantically put in charge at the last minute.
I know nothing here and am hoping someone can throw me a bone. Point me to a good thread, reco something to me that is worth buying for the long term but not over the top expensive. What are the things one looks for in a camera like this? I think we are looking to spend around $400."You don't want to run into me on the tram dock. I went to jail. I have an inclinometer, and a friend of a friend who's a lawyer. Why do you have to be such a hater? I was just trying to post some stoke." The Suit
"I demoed the Davenport 2 weeks ago, I really liked them a lot... the blue sidewalls and tip really looked great with my pants. I also tried the '11 MX98, they didn't look as good with my outfit. If you have blue pants or maybe some Lange race boots I recommend you check them out."

Well to start you probaly want to look at either Cannon or Nikon. From Nikon I would look at either the Coolpix P7000 or the Coolpix P100. From Cannon you could look at the Powershot S95. At $400 you aren't going to be getting a DSLR. If you go up to more like to $6-700 you could get a DSLR (body only) but you will also have to pay for a lens which can cost any where from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Are you focused more on pictures or videos? Are you trying to get professional looking pictures or just decent pictures?

mnskier, he wants a video camera, not a stills one with added video functionality! (to say nothing of the fact that he could probably get an older DSLR+lens for $400)...post first, THEN smoke crack.
(and the P7000 is not even shipping yet = the guy's getting married next weekend...)
Come on guys, I have no experience of video cams but can anyone help this chap rather than tell him to search? He might have more urgent things to do than search forums.
...and Smails - congratulations! You really need to stop knowing WTF you're talking about. (Tippster)

Yes crack was what I was smoking. He didn't say used. He also said camera which could imply a camera with video functionality. Typically it is called a video camcorder. Sorry OP to disappoint you I didn't read close enough that your wedding is next weekend.
Edit: The average consumer wanting video recording now a days will just buy a digital camera with a feature of the camera being able to record video in HD.

Horizon, thank you!
I know these kind of frantic posts aren't well received, but anyone who has gotten married probably understand the last minute freaking out that occurs from the female side. I am just trying to keep things calm, get my shit done at work so I can actually go on a honeymoon, and minimize meltdowns. I'll do a search if I have the time between all that shit and realize my lack of time makes me appear lazy, but I just need a little love so the assholes and Best Buy don't lead me down the wrong path.
It looks like $400 is too low for HD, but maybe we can spring for the extra couple hundred. If anyone has advice on an HD VIDEO camera in the $400 to $600 range please let me know. Or maybe you will all reply that HD is a waste? Given they way things are going it seems worth it, why I buy something already outdated?
Oh, and yeah, obviously with my lack of camera/video knowledge after 5 years on here I had no idea there was a separate forum . . . my bad."You don't want to run into me on the tram dock. I went to jail. I have an inclinometer, and a friend of a friend who's a lawyer. Why do you have to be such a hater? I was just trying to post some stoke." The Suit

If you can buy or borrow a tripod do this, and instruct who ever the amateur cameraman to do set shots (frame a shot and record with out making a move) as much as possible. Also for the ceremony the microphone on these small camcorder is not going to have that great of range so the closer you can set the camera up the better. Good luck and Congrats.

How about this one?

-under 400$, 10x optical zoom, small size, HD video, stereo sound, great for low light, wide angle lens, burst mode of 10fps.
seems to have all the features you would need, in a small package, and small price.
