Emerald
went to emerald lake for a look-see. wow, i had no idea the avy was so huge. cleaned the path right through. here are a couple of pictures comparing -- 17th of April 2009 and 22nd of April 2011.
(of course it makes sense for the avy path to get cleaned through every once in a while, i just wasn't expecting to see it any time soon given the size of the trees that had grown at the bottom, and the additional channel carved on the side)

Hit up Surprise pass yesterday morning. Was pretty bomber the whole way but I think timing and early starts will become more important with the melt/freeze. What amazing scenery. It was pretty busy though. At one point there were 14 people visible with a line up to cross one of the slide paths. The final climb up the pass was easier if you just boot packed it. THe skin track is pretty smashed. The ski down is starting to get sun affected but still nice until the last pitch. Lots of traffic has been through since the last snowfall.
Recently overheard: "Hey Ralph, what were you drinking that time that you set your face on fire?"

Wow...i'll be sure to stay away from anything popular in the next while. 14 people that's insane.

There was a group of what looked like 6 kids from a XC club. Those little shits just breezed back across the lake with a light tailwind. My fat ass kept breaking through the crust. The other group of 6 were just chugging along doing their own thing at a medium pace.
I can't imagine what Bow summit was like.Recently overheard: "Hey Ralph, what were you drinking that time that you set your face on fire?"

Went today to score some of T2C's sloppy seconds in the Flower Couloir. Really fine line. Snow wasn't really fantastic skiing, but not too bad. I don't think anybody else had been up there since T2C. There were barely any remnants of tracks up or down, but when there was, it looked like only 2 sets of tracks.
The objective for a beautiful morning
Fairly easy boot packing, especially when you let someone else break trail...
Looked like there was going to be some nice skiing once we got up there...
Yep, looks fun...
While the skiing was far from bad in the upper bowl, it was kind of "dust on firm". It was consistently firm, so you never felt like you were going to punch through, but it wasn't exactly hard charging confidence inspiring either.
The stem part was a little softer, but also a little more variable and the occasional bit of breakable crust.
All in all, a fun line that I've always looked at doing and had never gotten around to. Thanks for the motivation T2C! Even though the turns were far from epic, it's still quite the aesthetic line. It looks like the conditions should be good for a while still for more committing lines, so if there's something you've been thinking about, get out there!Last edited by TOLOCOMan; 04-26-2011 at 04:51 PM.

...I used to read that for a laugh, one of the biggest rope work jongs I have seen, HOWEVER I never thought of it as a conditions beta site and he does get out alot. Mofo needs to learn how to use his gear though.
