Traffic stop leads to police standoff with former extreme skier
August 13th, 2010 @ 3:35pm
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS -- A traffic stop in Cottonwood Heights led to a standoff and the arrest of a competitive skier.
Former extreme skier Eugene "E.J." Poplawski is being questioned after police found a large amount of drugs in his home following what would have been a routine traffic stop, had he not run from police.
Police ended up at Poplawski's home after they tried to pull over his truck for speeding and driving recklessly near 1900 East and Fort Union Blvd. around 2 a.m. Friday.
"It's unfortunate that he would run from us," said Cottonwood Heights Detective Beau Babka. "It was a simple traffic stop and the whole thing that started the domino effect."
Eugene "E.J." Poplawski, left, and Jason Ray, right.
Police used the license plate number to track down the truck, which was still warm when they found it in Poplawski's driveway. Cops were immediately concerned, though, because of what was next to the truck.
"There was a gun, a handgun, that looked like it had fallen out or been dropped outside the driver's side door," said Babka.

Sucks.
I wish EJ the best. What happened to him was life changing. Living in Utah makes you paranoid if you're into partying. I don't think anyone should judge him.

I hope that the other side of all this turmoil involves some peace, personal growth, and quality of life as opposed to moving in the other direction.

i do not know this great man but he is one of our own. he is
still such a young man for the path of heartache and pain
that he has traveled...but for the grace of god. at this
time he is in the health services unit at county.

having spent my share of time at this fine facility - my
"so" number goes back to my wild youth in the early eighties
and is so low the deputies give me a double take and call me
og - i know it ain't pleasant. if you have the means and
desire put some money on his books so he can order more
nutritious food than served. honestly i would rather tear a
nut off than to go near that place - goddam concrete and
plexiglass hell hole that it is - however i will ride my bike
down and visit him soon. hold that - just remembered bout a
couple outstandings - well i will write.
here is his mailing address - please visit the above site and
read the rules about mail so no one gets in trouble - ya it
is that strict.

this guy is a idiot. driving around with a handgun and then running to your home with copious amounts (distribution point amounts) of drugs and more handguns. Then wasting im guessing close to 10 grand in taxpayer dollars (swat teams for over 4 hours and 2 rounds of tear gas) because he is to prideful to admit he fucked up and face the music. for all you people supporting him in any other way than hoping for justice and rehabilitation, i hope your kid gets introduced to drugs by a guy similar to EJ real soon. people supporting people because of there athletic ability and not the content of their character is the reason people like OJ and Ray Lewis get/got away with so much shit.

Or you could just 'hope' that people raise their children properly and teach them to use reason and make their own choices. This way, your kid isn't a sheep that follows everyone else, and you don't have to make douchebag posts worrying about someone 'introducing' drugs to them.

i just think its funny how many people are supporting this fucktard drug dealer (and would bash on probably any other in the same scenario) simply because he used to be a ripping skier. your a bunch of pro hoes ^^

and OJ didn't do it because he broke a few NFL records huh?
your just a pro hoe. he might have been a great skier but this has nothing to do with that anymore. I could post 100 stories about today alones drug busts and dumb criminal acts but unless they used to be a pro skier then you wouldn't care much less defend them. your a hypocrite and you don't even know it.
that is a quote about freedom, it sounds like EJ was living a life in submittance to addiction (drugs, money and a lifestyle that forces you to carry a handgun around to do your illegal business) how that has anything to do with what Jim Morrison said please explain."I think people resist freedom because they're afraid of the unknown. the people on this page are my family, my tribe. without meeting most of you i never the less feel strong bonds of kinship with you - all of you. cause when it is all said and done we have more in common than many biological families.
the things that ej did are not normal and that rouses the parent in me to wonder about the situations that he may have experienced that may have contributed to this behavior. then i find out that at the peak of his professional extreme ski career he has his leg torn off - above the knee - yet has the character to persevere and is back on skis. he is my neighbor - not next door but he is my neighbor. he lives thousands of miles from his family in a state that is an "insiders" place. i think what are the employment prospects of someone like ej. the high risk of moving weed no doubt helps meet his need for "extreme". seems to me that our personal greatness - and we all strive for personal greatness - comes in some measure from our desire and willingness to give others a helping hand when they are down. we never
derive greatness by walking over the downtrodden.
"And when one of you falls down he falls for those behind
him, a caution against the stumbling stone.
Ay, and he falls for those ahead of him, who though faster
and surer of foot, yet removed not the stumbling stone."

I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you
came to visit me."

A lot of asumption going on there. I bow to your glowing saintly existance. You a douche and don't know it. Like I said earlier, STFU or elaborate what you do know about this guy. I've witness a trashed human get back on the saddle and accomplish more with one leg than most can do with two. You have no fvcking clue as to what the guy was or is or what he's been through. All you got is opinions. I'm more in favor of locking asshats like you up. Your diatribe on this topic demonstrates you are more of a danger to your kids. Get a grip. Maybe a life.Johnny's only sin was dispair

im no saint. and speaking from experience when it gets to the point where you are having to arm yourself, your off the deep end. People that own guns and traffic drugs are willing to kill other humans. This is a quality you respect?
And props to him for being a amputee and still skiing, but he had a good life and extreme skiing poses inherent risks (i compete) that we all will have to face one day. There are many people who weren't blessed with the life or talent he has/had and still manage to do some good without many limbs. Not just one leg.

and guess what, this guy isn't trafficking and wont shoot your children when they cant pay for there OZ's either.
So i am curious where your utmost sympathy's are coming from.
and slaag, many people would say that pushing drugs is exactly what "walking over the downtrodden" epitomizes."I think people resist freedom because they're afraid of the unknown. at this point Jason has not received any charges from this incident - just priors that are not related.

i do not think the "facts" have been confused by celebrity. at this point in time the facts are not very clear. however reasonable intelligence may be used to reach some understanding of the situation while not trespassing upon the privacy of anyone. the fact that ej has been charged in connection with the drugs and not jason does not establish a factual basis for asserting that ej was a "pusher". it is my understanding that the leaseholder will be charged for offense up front. a pusher is one that does not use the drug they are selling - very unlikely. jason so# indicates he was first arrested 52566 people ahead of ej - which amounts to years. draw you own conclusions.
but the real bottom line is this - if this story, individual, or our response in anyway angers someone - or if they think the whole situation is a crock of shit - just walk away. why spend the time and emotion getting caught up in something where you have no expected positive payback? on the other hand if you just need to rant for whatever reason - go to the padded room - time out
