Going to Fernie this weekend, What Rides? Camping? Food/Beer?
Buddy and I are going up to Fernie this weekend. Just looking for some basic beta. Did a search but didn't really turn up anything specific.
I found this site:
http://www.bikefernie.ca/
and figured we would stop in to a shop and get the low down. We are more XC than DH in our riding types but are not a afraid to get after it.
We will be looking to camp so any tips there would be great as well.
Should we bring the dogs or is that frowned upon up there?a positive attitude will not solve all of your problems, but it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

i'm sure there are others who can give you better beta on trails and biking in general, but i have something to share re: camping. whenever we go to fernie we camp at Kikomun provincial park, some 40km west of there. it's a great campground with several swimmable lakes nearby.

curry bowl is also a great spot for dinner. Nice patio on the roof too.
As for camping Fernie Provincial Park is close to town if you want to be close by. Other than that there are a lot of options around for areas with lakes. Can't comment on the bike trails though.

Fernie was stop #1 on an epic cross candian adventure for mysefl and a few buddies two summers ago. Such a cool place. I'm fuzzy on the exact name, but you should ride a trail with the word "king" in the name. Maybe three kings? Super fun, flowy jump trail.
We camped just a few miles out of town along the highway near the base of the Fernie ski resort. Not a bad campground.

we were up in Fernie a few years back, fun riding around there. There's a good map of the area at any bike shop up there.
There were a few rides above the school on the east? side of town, through some logged areas, I remember one trail "Broken Derailleur" being really fun going in and out through the logged area. There was another on the north side of the resort that we climbed up outside the resort property and then came down something at the resort.
If you can ride with any locals ask around and ride with Eddie Plant, he'll show you some really fun stuff probably not on the map.
As for camping, the provincal park is nice, has a nice pool at a waterfall area (hard to miss it) to cool off in after riding.
As for food and beer, one word "poutine"

Tons of trails above town, basically "Uptown" part of town, above the dump, etc. I believe this is where the most established trail network is from long before the ski hill opened up the lift access. And then of course now there is the ski hill, never biked it though.
I always loved hitting up Surveyors Lake as a kid, that and Kookanusa, both close enough. And some cliff diving S of town on the river, not sure where exactly.
Waxman is a good source for info.

buy the local, just released guide book.
The transrockies bike race just passed thru town, so that trail might be a bit beat down, but the rest should be good to go.
straightline bikes, guide hut for stores
hill is open for chairlift riding.

Make sure you ride roots-roots extension-roots hyperextension, if it's still open. One of my favorite singletrack rides EVA!!

if you can find a local to get directions to Silver Springs for some afternoon beers and cliff jumping. It's down the river from Elco. Favorite place to go and enjoy some sun and beverages in peace.

Camping - Definitely the provincial park. Real close to good riding. You can ride from there to almost any trail.
Riding - as mentioned above, the new Fernie Bike Guide is very good. I'd recommend: Phat Bastard to Mushroom head to Dem Bones. This ends right at the campground. For a longer ride, at the top of Mushroom head, head up Lactic Ridge to Slunt. Follow Slunt to Brokeback Ridge. These are all on Mt. Fernie and real close to the Campsite. Also on Mt. Fernie, Project 9 is a one of my favorites in town. These trails are xc-ish. I ride them all on my 5" trail bike. All of them are singletrack climbs to the top and continuous descents Nothing too gnarly.
Other great rides - as mentioned above, roots to hyperventilation to roots hyperextension is great (great views). This was just part of the transrockies though, so it may be in need of maintenance. Another option from the top of hyperextension is castle rocks to south castle, I've yet to do this one though, but I hear great things. These are on the other side of the highway on Mt. Castle. On Mt. Proctor, Swine Flu is all sorts of fun. A new trail that I've yet to do, but have heard it is killer is Porky Blue. This is a new XC ride that was recently completed.
All of these are described on the website, in the guidebook or at Straightline or Guide's Hut. There's a bunch more of course, but these are some of my favorites that are XC-ish.
Definitely bring your dog. Fernie is a very dog Friendly town.
Eats - Blue Toque for b-fast (they have a dog lounge). Check out Cincott Market on the highway for a casual lunch/dinner.
