Thread: Question about baskets

I've got a few pairs of poles that have racing baskets on them, but would obviously prefer a powder basket at certain times. Is it a bad idea (or even possible) to stick a bigger basket on, below the current basket, and maybe secure it with duct tape, just for the times that I need a bigger basket?
And I know I could just switch or get other poles, but I already travel with two pairs of poles and can't add another.

If you can find any of the Smith twist-lock baskets, those can work on other brands of poles.

You can never go wrong with duct tape.

Yeah, I did contemplate constructing a basket out of duct tape, but the engineering plans got lost.

Have you considered wicker? Very retro.

The local ski shop replaced a set of the old fixed type racing style baskets with a setup of interchangable twist-lock type ones for me. I believe he used Lifelink (or mayby Leki) parts.

Twist - pull - push - twist and you're done.

Seems like it was 20 or 25 bucks.

Yeah, I thought I had seen baskets like that. So those are what you use? I'll have to look around, but I still just want to know if it's a bad idea to throw some extra baskets on below the current ones as a temporary measure.

Dakine makes some of those as well. $20 seems about right I think.

Due to the taper of the shaft, you won't get a tight enough connection. Even with duct tape, you'll probably end up losing the basket and there will be another piece of rubbish to pick up when the snow melts.

Since you need both styles of baskets, go for an interchangable retro-fit on the set you'd be using off the course.

What kind of poles are you using? For new school composites and such, follow the above advise.

Reason #26 for using regular aluminum shafts: You can go to your local rental shop and pick up some snowflake baskets. They can be quickly exchanged by means of a hammer, preferable one that's been upclose and personal with the side of a Southie's head.

Duct tape, bing bang boom, done. Provides a nice little bit of ballast on the end of your poles too.

Yeah, I actually do think duct tape might work--I know that the shafts taper and make a perfect connection impossible, but for several years I was constantly losing baskets off this one set of poles (it was from hitting gates and having them get ripped off), and eventually I just put a big collar of duct tape underneath and never lost a basket again.
But frankly, I don't know if I want all that ballast (two baskets plus duct tape), so maybe I will just stop being too cheap to buy the other thing.

I buy my poles at garage sales.

Bump just cuz the duct tape solution with the cheap-o baskets worked great.
