This one turned green at the end and exploded like a firework!

Blur of stars and our galaxy from 300 second exposure. Can anyone tell me why no matter how hard I try to nail the WB most of the stars are bluish? What's the right degrees K for stars?

    ^Haha!!!

    I was higher

    (not a 'blur' entry btw)

I usually shoot stars around 4k for white balance. That's also neutral enough that you can screw around a little bit. Mine are kind of bluish in the one above too but that was sort of intentional when I messed with it after the fact because I wanted the reflection on the lake to be kind of blue. That streaker was nuts. I wasn't even looking at the sky when it hit but it was like a flashbulb went off.

On a serious note. Could you two post the exif data for those two shots? They're cool.

    heh

    My clock is off

edit: Why does Lane's show that it was processed through PS but mine doesn't show that it went through Lightroom? Weird. I did resize it using a different program, maybe it got lost in that step.

Wilbert: yeah that was around midnight

Thanks man. That first star trail thingy is like 100 frames. I've got the final composite but just figured it was cooler to see it animated.

That last one is in no way shape or form a 'blur' submission. I was just messing with Lane. That was dumb accident though. That's a crop of the next to last frame in a 210 frame timelapse I was shooting.

Props man, that shot is sick! So much cleaner than mine. And at 1250. If I go to ISO 800 I get pattern banding really bad. I think the 50D just sucks at low light. And, I need a faster wide angle.

That's so awesome you got the same meteor! Where can we check the timelapse?

I was at the Martis Peak fire lookout tower, where were you? Man work at 7am this morning sucked...

Shit, you were actually higher than me then.

I was right by the same place I met you. Just walked down the rim trail a bit to where there's a sweet overlook.

I wasn't planning on shooting meteors, I just figured I'd bang off a timelapse over the lake while my girlfriend and I looked in the opposite direction for streamers. Like I said, dumb accident.

I'm probably going to use the timelapse for a video I'm working on.....stay tuned.

I guess it might make sense that the 50d gets noiser than the 7d just based on what I've seen with a 5d/1d compared to mine. Both of those blow my camera away at higher ISOs. What's the difference in sensor size/setup between a 50d and a 7d? But you get noisy shots at 1250 even on really long exposures like that? I do if I don't burn an image in long enough but as long as I get a good exposure, it tends to be fairly clean. At 20-30s exposures, 1250 is about the max I can go FWIW. Anything higher and I need to expose more. Incidentally, 1000 ISO on my camera seems to be noisier than 1250. Kind of weird.

I think the 50D/7D have the same sized sensor (APS-C), but the 7D has more sensels and higher resolution (and apparently does better at high ISO w.r.t noise). I hate getting in technical details too much in photography but it does particularly matter in low-light night sky shooting. As you said above, the 1D/5D excel here and far surpass either of our cameras due to larger sensors and larger sensels.

No meteors in this shot, but check it out for noise comparison purposes - ISO 800, 30 seconds @ f/3.5 -it clearly sucks ass. The extra stop (or is it two?) to f/2.8 makes a big difference, but you can't ignore the red pattern banding if you look close to L and below the milky way.

I have heard that odd stops of ISO are smoother too, but I have no idea why.

^Turn your damn headlamp off! That's not noise, that's dust illuminated in the foreground.

There's some vertical banding above the center/left trees but that might even be actual backlight on them. I don't have anything in the foreground of my shot like that but that tree shadowing might actually 'be there'. There was all kinds of light coming out of kings beach.

If you look at orange haze zone in my shot, it's not really any cleaner than that IMO. Plus there's noise all over the lake surface too. I'd say that's maybe a tad noisier but not like worlds different or anything. I think there's just a little more going on in my shot to serve as a distraction. You've obviously seen a bunch more from your camera than I have but just based on those two shots, I wouldn't say there's that much difference at 800.

Dust. Ha, I'll show you dust in a few weeks my friend....my 50D is going to GET IT, that's for sure.

Anyway I think I'm just trained to see the pattern banding noise in my shots >ISO800 cause it bothers me so that's the first thing I see. I know I am not alone:

    http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/809574 (for example)

And it just sucks, but you learn to get around it. I could have brought the MF 120...no nose there, just good ol' grain.

(sorry for the thread hijack btw....don't at all mean to distract attention to the other non-astronomical blur shots in here)

I've got a more urban style watermark I can sell you too. custom made, 100% grimey. will take a crisp $10 bill to get this badboy though, as it ups your street cred by atleast twice. any mf'er that sees your pic of hummingbirds with this watermark wont even think about using it without your permission somewhere else on the interwebz.

Made a half-assed attempt at another shot on my way home ... figured might as well throw it in here as #3 for academic purposes anyway. Prime lens meant I couldn't really isolate the Asian guy with the motion blur in the background. I wasn't about to go sneaking up on any of these people in confined quarters as I started getting the death stare from the dude on the far right after this shot. 1/4 sec using a handrail as support ... these trains get kind of bumpy too!

^^ Why is it that on public transit the world over everyone uses that same blank facial expression? Showing any emotion seems to be a universally recognized faux pas!
